Failing medical school in New Zealand? Failed year or exclusion at Auckland or Otago: what happens now and how a transfer abroad brings you back as a doctor.

At a glance

  • New Zealand has two medical schools, Auckland and Otago, so there is nowhere else in the country to go if one of them excludes you
  • One failed exam rarely ends your studies: special examinations and a repeated year come first
  • Who decides: the board of examiners and the progress committee of your school
  • Missed the cut after the competitive first year? The same route abroad is open to you
  • Way out: transfer to a recognised medical school in Europe or the Caribbean, often into a higher year
  • Coming back: through the NZREX Clinical to registration in New Zealand, planned from day one
  • USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK count as the prerequisite for the NZREX Clinical, and some of our partner universities have had a 100 percent USMLE pass rate over the last two years
  • First step: free transfer consultation with Medschool Experts

In a country with two medical schools, failing feels like there is no second chance. A year is failed, the board of examiners writes to you, and you realise that the only other school will hardly take you with that letter in your file.

Below you find how Auckland and Otago handle failed years, why capable students get stuck, why an early switch saves years, and how a transfer to a recognised medical school in Europe or the Caribbean keeps your way back to New Zealand open.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Failing out in New Zealand

In short: Yes, you can be excluded from medical school in New Zealand, but rarely because of one exam. A failed assessment usually leads to a special examination or remediation first, then a repeated year, and only after continued failure to exclusion from the programme. As a rule a year may be repeated only once.

The rules sit in your programme regulations and in the decisions of the board of examiners. Professional conduct counts as much as exam results, and the clinical years are assessed as a whole, so one weak attachment can hold back the entire year.

How a medical degree in New Zealand gets blocked: four stages

Auckland and Otago use different names, the sequence is the same.

01

Special examination

A failed assessment is re-examined or remediated.

02

Conditional progress

You continue under conditions and close monitoring by the school.

03

Repeated year

The board of examiners decides you may not progress. You repeat the whole year.

04

Exclusion

Your enrolment in Medicine ends, subject to an appeal.

Exclusion and appeals

In short: An exclusion ends your enrolment in Medicine at that university. You can appeal inside the university, usually within a few weeks. With only two medical schools in the country, a second place in New Zealand is close to impossible. A medical school in Europe or the Caribbean is the realistic way to continue.

Appeal if you have grounds, such as illness, a family crisis or a procedural error, and bring documents. Ask at the same time whether withdrawing in good standing is still possible. Request your academic record and course outlines now, whatever the outcome.

Free transfer consultation

Two medical schools at home, more than 25 partner universities abroad

We transfer you to recognised universities in Europe or the Caribbean whose degree lets you sit the NZREX Clinical. In a free consultation we check which of them accept your coursework and plan your route back to New Zealand.

Missed the first-year cut

In short: Most students in New Zealand do not fail inside Medicine, they miss the competitive entry after the first year of health sciences or biomedical science. Your passed first-year papers are not lost: universities abroad can credit them, and you start Medicine without another round of selection.

A strong first year that fell a few marks short says little about the doctor you can become. Instead of a second attempt at the same bottleneck or a degree you never wanted, you can start Medicine abroad this year and come home through the same registration route.

Why students get stuck

In short: Medical students in New Zealand who struggle rarely lack ability. The usual reasons are burnout, depression or anxiety, a family crisis, money pressure, clinical placements far from home, exam anxiety and an undiagnosed learning difference.

Depression shows up quietly, as lectures replayed without taking in a word. It is treatable, and a leave of absence is a legitimate tool. Some students know the material and still go blank in an exam, others read slowly and were never assessed.

None of this means you chose the wrong profession. I started dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, at 24, years after most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. A slower start says nothing about the doctor you will become.

Switch early

In short: If exams keep going wrong, switching university is often the better move, and the earlier the better. The clinical years bring more material and less time. A transfer abroad while you are still in good standing saves time, stress and student loan debt.

That is why at Medschool Experts we always advise switching early. A student who changes after the second or third year arrives abroad with recent coursework and a clean record. A student who waits for the exclusion letter arrives later and with less room to plan. Both can make it. The first one saves years.

Signs that a switch makes sense now

If two of these four apply to you, book a free transfer consultation now rather than after the next exam.

01

You have failed an assessment and its special examination.

02

You are repeating a year or have already repeated one.

03

The board of examiners has put conditions on your progress.

04

You missed entry into second-year Medicine.

Next four weeks

  • Week 1: read your programme regulations and write down every deadline, including the appeal deadline.
  • Week 1 to 2: meet your student affairs or associate dean's office and ask exactly what the next failure would trigger.
  • Week 2 to 3: if anxiety, low mood or reading speed play a part, contact student health and disability services.
  • Week 3 to 4: request your academic record and the course outlines of everything you have passed.
  • Before the board decides: book a free transfer consultation to compare staying with a transfer abroad and a planned return to New Zealand.

Europe or the Caribbean

In short: A transfer from Auckland or Otago to an English-taught medical school in Europe or the Caribbean is possible, and Medschool Experts organises it. We place you at universities listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, so that your degree lets you sit the NZREX Clinical and return to New Zealand. Which universities fit you, and which year you can enter, depends on your profile.

A study transfer is a complicated undertaking. Every university checks hours, content and syllabi in its own way, and the documents have to arrive in exactly the right form. Our experts have almost ten years of experience with study transfers worldwide, and we regularly achieve placements into higher years, at times Year 4 or Year 5.

Returning to New Zealand

In short: Yes, you can come back. Graduates from abroad sit the NZREX Clinical, a clinical examination held in Auckland. To be admitted you need a pass, within the last five years, in USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK, the AMC MCQ, PLAB Part 1 or the MCCQE Part I. After the NZREX Clinical you work under supervision before full registration.

You can sit the NZREX Clinical more than once, and a pass is valid for five years. The part to plan carefully is the supervised first year, because positions for NZREX graduates are limited. You should know that before you start, and plan for it from the first year.

This is where the choice of university pays off. USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK open the door to the NZREX Clinical, and we favour universities that build USMLE preparation into the programme. Some of our partner universities in Europe and the Caribbean have had a 100 percent USMLE pass rate over the last two years.

Costs compared

In short: Tuition for domestic students in Medicine in New Zealand is about €9,500 a year, and a repeated year costs that again plus a year of living costs on your student loan. Tuition at European medical schools starts at about €3,500 a year, and living costs in many Central and Eastern European cities are €5,000 to €8,000.

A year abroad often costs less than a repeated year at home and moves you forward. Caribbean universities are priced higher than European ones, and we show you the real numbers for each option in the consultation.

How we help

In short: Medschool Experts reviews your academic record, course outlines and clinical hours in a free transfer consultation, finds recognised medical schools in Europe or the Caribbean that fit your profile, prepares the application and the documents, and plans your route back to New Zealand. More than 500 students have been placed so far.

Getting started is simple. You send us your academic record, and we check what can be recognised and where. Then we plan the transfer, the paperwork and the timing together, ideally before the board of examiners decides. The first step is always a free transfer consultation.

The author's view

When I began dental medicine in Sofia in 2015, I was 24, years older than most of my classmates. I graduated in 2021, and today nobody asks how old I was in my first semester. I tell this because students from New Zealand who write to us often believe that with two medical schools in the country, one letter has closed the profession to them. It has not.

Getting stuck usually says something about a hard year, an illness or a selection system with far too few places. Plan the next step before the board plans it for you. That is when the most doors are open.

Summary

Failing medical school in New Zealand rarely happens in one moment. The board of examiners decides step by step, through special examinations and a repeated year, and only then through exclusion. With two medical schools in the country, a second place at home is close to impossible.

A transfer to a recognised medical school in Europe or the Caribbean is possible, and graduates return to New Zealand through a prerequisite exam such as USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK and the NZREX Clinical. We plan that route home with you from the first day.

Conclusion

An exclusion letter feels final, but your goal does not have to end with it. Talk to us before the board decides. The transfer consultation is free, and it shows you which recognised universities accept the coursework you already have and how you come back to New Zealand as a doctor. Failing medical school in New Zealand: 7 questions and answers

Can you be excluded from medical school in New Zealand?

Yes, but rarely because of one exam. Failed assessments usually lead to a special examination, then a repeated year, and only after continued failure to exclusion.

Can I move to the other New Zealand medical school after an exclusion?

That is close to impossible. There are only two medical schools, and a new application has to explain the exclusion.

I missed entry into second-year Medicine. Can I study abroad instead?

Yes. Universities abroad can credit your passed first-year papers, and you start Medicine without another round of selection.

Can I transfer from Auckland or Otago to Europe or the Caribbean?

Yes. Medschool Experts organises transfers to English-taught medical schools in Europe or the Caribbean. The receiving university assesses your academic record, course outlines and clinical hours, and the year of entry depends on your profile.

Can I practise in New Zealand after graduating abroad?

Yes. You need a pass within the last five years in USMLE Steps 1 and 2 CK, the AMC MCQ, PLAB Part 1 or the MCCQE Part I, then you sit the NZREX Clinical and work under supervision before full registration.

Do your partner universities prepare for the USMLE?

Yes. We favour universities with USMLE preparation built into the programme. Some of our partner universities in Europe and the Caribbean have had a 100 percent USMLE pass rate over the last two years.

Does the consultation with Medschool Experts cost anything?

No. The transfer consultation is free and without obligation. We look at your academic record and your goals and explain which options are open to you.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester

All articles by Marcel Kloos are based on first-hand visits to the universities, placement data from Medschool Experts and conversations with current students. Book a free consultation to discuss your own path.
