Medical studies in Georgia without NC: New Vision University & European University Tbilisi. Costs, structure, recognition for international students.

Georgia has developed into one of the most sought-after destinations for international medical students in recent years. The country in the South Caucasus offers English-language medical programmes without a numerus clausus, significantly lower tuition costs than Western Europe, and a growing international student community. Particularly for applicants from non-EU countries – including Iran, and other Asian and African countries – Georgia has become an attractive starting point for an international medical career.

Medschool Experts works with two partner universities in the capital Tbilisi: New Vision University (7,000 EUR per year) and European University Tbilisi (6,500 EUR per year). Both programmes are six years long, fully taught in English, and listed by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) – a prerequisite for ECFMG certification. For German applicants: Georgia is not an EU member, which means the degree is not automatically recognised. Instead, the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO applies – a pathway that can lead to full licensure (Approbation), but requires active planning.

Georgia as a Study Destination – What Makes It Different?

Georgia is not an EU member, but offers a combination of factors that makes it particularly attractive for international medical students. Universities in Tbilisi have invested heavily in English-language programmes and international accreditations in recent years. The most important difference compared to traditional EU destinations such as Hungary or Bulgaria: a degree from Georgia is not automatically recognised within the EU.

What still makes Georgia stand out:

  • No NC: There is no admission restriction through a numerus clausus.
  • English-language: Both partner universities offer the entire medical programme in English – no language barrier for international applicants.
  • WFME Listing: Both universities are listed by the World Federation for Medical Education, which is a prerequisite for later ECFMG certification.
  • Low cost of living: Tbilisi is one of the most affordable European capitals. Students typically budget around 550 EUR per month.
  • Growing international community: Tbilisi has developed into a hub for international students from over 50 countries.

Our Partner Universities in Tbilisi

Both of Medschool Experts’ partner institutions are located in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital. Here is a direct comparison of the key features:

FeatureNew Vision UniversityEuropean University Tbilisi

Annual tuition fee7,000 EUR6,500 EUR
Duration6 years6 years
Language of instructionEnglishEnglish

Both universities have significantly expanded their international programmes in recent years. New Vision University is known for its modern infrastructure and a strongly internationally oriented curriculum. European University Tbilisi has a longer history and a broad clinical network across Georgia.

Who Is Georgia Suitable For?

Georgia is particularly attractive for international applicants from non-EU countries. Students from Iran, Asian or African countries who are pursuing an English-language degree and want to practise in their home country or internationally afterwards will find a solid environment at reasonable costs in Georgia.

For German applicants, there is an important caveat: since Georgia is not part of the EU, automatic recognition under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC) does not apply. The path to German Approbation runs through the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO – a viable route, but one that requires active planning and individual advice. Anyone of German origin aiming for an Approbation in Germany should discuss this fork in the road before enrolling.

Which of the two universities suits you – or whether another country in our partner network is the better answer for your situation – is not something an article can settle. What a university expects differs from one institution and one intake to the next, which is why we deliberately do not publish checklists here. Send us your profile instead: your school-leaving certificate, any study record you already have, and the countries you could imagine. We check individually where we can place you, tell you at which university in which country that is, and where we can get you in on a plan you can genuinely rely on – across our network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine.

Recognition Status in Germany

Georgia is not a member of the European Union. This means: a medical degree obtained in Georgia is not automatically recognised in Germany under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC).

The path to German Approbation runs through the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO, arranged by the licensing authority. Once the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) is passed, the Approbation follows. This route works – but it wants to be planned for, and planned for early. That is one of the points we go through with German applicants before they decide on a country.

For international students from non-EU countries, the recognition process typically runs through Approbation or licensing in their respective home country. The WFME listing of both partner institutions is an important prerequisite here.

What Does Medical Study in Georgia Cost?

Study costs in Georgia are among the lowest internationally – while offering recognised degrees and English-language instruction. The following overview shows the key cost items for both partner universities:

Cost itemNew Vision UniversityEuropean University Tbilisi
Annual tuition fee7,000 EUR6,500 EUR
Duration6 years6 years
Total tuition feesapprox. 42,000 EURapprox. 39,000 EUR
Monthly cost of living (Tbilisi)approx. 550 EURapprox. 550 EUR
Total cost of living (72 months)approx. 39,600 EURapprox. 39,600 EUR
Total cost (estimated)approx. 82,000 EURapprox. 79,000 EUR

The cost of living of around 550 EUR per month includes rent for a room in a shared flat or a small apartment, food, public transport, and basic leisure expenses. Compared to Western European university cities, Tbilisi is significantly cheaper – even compared to Eastern European alternatives such as Budapest or Prague.

How Is the Programme Structured?

The medical programme at both partner institutions in Tbilisi is structured as a six-year full-time degree. The structure follows international standards:

PhaseYearsFocus areas
Pre-clinical1–3Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, pathology, pharmacology
Clinical4–6Internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, psychiatry, emergency medicine

Both universities are listed by the WFME (World Federation for Medical Education). This listing is a prerequisite for ECFMG certification – an important step for graduates seeking admission in the USA or Canada. The programmes are aligned to international academic standards and are regularly accredited. Instruction takes place in English throughout; basic Georgian can be useful in clinical day-to-day life and most students pick it up as they go.

Life in Tbilisi

Tbilisi is one of the most vibrant capitals in the Caucasus – with a long history, a growing international community, and a cost of living that is very comfortable for students. The city is nestled between mountains, on the banks of the Kura River, and combines a historic old town with modern neighbourhoods and an active cultural scene.

  • Rent: A furnished room or small apartment can be found for 200–350 EUR per month.
  • Food: Groceries and restaurant meals are significantly cheaper than in Western Europe.
  • Public transport: Tbilisi has a metro, buses, and affordable taxis – getting around the city is straightforward and inexpensive.
  • Climate: Tbilisi has a temperate continental climate with warm summers and cool winters.
  • International community: Both universities have students from over 50 countries. English is the common language on campus.

The Caucasus region also offers unique opportunities for weekend trips into the surrounding mountain landscape. Students report an open and welcoming atmosphere in the city.

Career Paths After Graduation

After completing medical studies in Georgia, various career paths are open – depending on the target country and the applicable national recognition rules. Career paths with an EU medical degree worldwide

Since a Georgian medical degree is not an EU degree, the rules of the target country apply in each case:

  • Home country (non-EU): For many international students from non-EU countries, the goal is Approbation or licensing in their home country. The WFME listing of the Georgian partner universities greatly facilitates this process in many countries.
  • USA/Canada: ECFMG certification is possible since both universities are WFME-listed. The path includes the USMLE examination series and a match process for residency.
  • Germany: The path runs through the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO – a viable but planning-intensive route.
  • Georgia: Professional licensing and practice in Georgia is also possible after graduation.

Note: For non-EU degrees, the rules of the target country apply in each case. Early career planning – ideally before the start of studies – is strongly recommended.

The author's view

As someone who has been accompanying medical study abroad for years – particularly at EU locations such as Sofia – I see an interesting parallel with Georgia: similar to Bulgaria in the early years of its study operations, Georgia offers English-language programmes at affordable costs, but with one decisive difference in the recognition pathway. EU degrees come with a clear legal framework. Georgia does not.

What makes Georgia attractive is a combination of factors that you would be hard pressed to find in this form at any other location: fully English-language, no NC, WFME-listed – and at a lower cost than most EU alternatives. For international students who know where their path should lead after graduation, and plan for it early, that is a strong argument.

Honestly: for Germans who want to practise in Germany, Georgia is not the first choice. The lack of EU membership means real recognition effort – the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO is not a mere formality. Those who know this path and plan for it can follow it. Those who do not know it should not take it without proper guidance.

For international students from non-EU countries who are seeking a solid English-language medical education and are flexible about where they practise afterwards, Georgia is a genuine recommendation. If you are unsure which location suits your situation, contact us – at /contact you will find all the ways to reach us.

Conclusion

Georgia is a study destination that offers genuine value for the right audience: English-language, no NC, affordable, and with WFME-listed partner universities in a city that is easy to live in. Whether it is the right destination for you depends above all on where you want to practise afterwards – and that is a question worth answering before you pick a country, not after.

That is exactly what we do with you. Tell us about your profile – your school-leaving certificate, any study record you already have – and the countries you could imagine. We then check individually at which university, in which country, we can place you, and where we can get you in on a plan you can genuinely rely on. Our network of official partner universities covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, so the answer is rarely limited to a single destination.

We deliberately publish no requirement lists or timetables here, because they differ from one university and one intake to the next. A short conversation gets you further than any checklist – and it costs nothing. All contact options can be found at /contact.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Studies in Georgia

Is the medical degree from Georgia recognised in Germany?

Not automatically. Georgia is not an EU member, so the EU Professional Qualifications Directive (2005/36/EC) does not apply. The path to German Approbation runs through the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO at the relevant state authority. Once you pass it, the Approbation is granted – but the route requires active planning and individual preparation.

What is the total cost of medical studies in Georgia?

Tuition fees are 7,000 EUR per year at New Vision University or 6,500 EUR per year at European University Tbilisi. Over 6 years, this amounts to approximately 42,000 or 39,000 EUR in tuition alone. Add cost of living of approximately 550 EUR per month – that is a further approx. 39,600 EUR over 6 years. Total costs are therefore approximately 79,000–82,000 EUR.

In what language is medical study in Georgia taught?

Both partner universities – New Vision University and European University Tbilisi – offer their medical programme entirely in English. Georgian is not needed for the programme itself, though a little of it is helpful in clinical practice.

Are the Georgian universities WFME-listed?

Yes. Both of Medschool Experts’ partner institutions in Georgia – New Vision University and European University Tbilisi – are listed by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). This listing is an important prerequisite for later ECFMG certification, which is required for admission in the USA or Canada.

Who is medical study in Georgia particularly suitable for?

Primarily for international students from non-EU countries who are pursuing an English-language, WFME-listed medical degree without NC and want to practise in their home country or internationally afterwards. For Germans aiming for Approbation in Germany, we recommend an individual consultation in advance.

What distinguishes Georgia from EU study locations such as Hungary or Bulgaria?

The key difference is the recognition pathway. Degrees from EU member states such as Hungary or Bulgaria are automatically recognised within the EU under the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC. A Georgian degree, by contrast, must be recognised in Germany through the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO. The quality of education is comparable, while study costs in Georgia tend to be lower.

How long does medical study in Georgia take?

Medical study at both partner institutions in Tbilisi takes six years. The first three years cover the pre-clinical programme with foundational science subjects; the final three years cover clinical training with rotations in teaching hospitals.

What is Tbilisi like as a university city?

Tbilisi is the Georgian capital and offers international students an attractive environment: affordable rents (200–350 EUR/month for a room), an active international student community, good public transport, and a temperate climate. The city combines historic charm with modern infrastructure.

What is the difference between New Vision University and European University Tbilisi?

Both universities are WFME-listed and offer six-year English-language medical programmes. The key differences lie in the price (7,000 EUR vs. 6,500 EUR per year) and focus: New Vision University is known for its modern infrastructure and international orientation; European University Tbilisi has a longer history and a broad clinical network.

Can Iranian students study medicine in Georgia?

Yes. Georgia is a popular study destination for students from Iran and other non-EU countries. The English-language programmes, no NC requirement, and WFME listing make Georgia particularly attractive for this target group. After graduation, the path often runs through Approbation or licensing in the home country.

What do I need in order to get a place?

There is no numerus clausus and no grade threshold you would have to clear. Beyond that, what an individual university expects differs from one institution and one intake to the next, so we do not publish a list here that would be out of date by next year. Send us your certificates and the countries you have in mind, and we will check individually where we can place you – at which university, in which country, and where we can get you in on a plan you can rely on. Our partner network covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, and the consultation is free.

What career options are available after graduation?

After graduating in Georgia, various paths are open: Approbation or licensing in the home country (the most common route for non-EU graduates), ECFMG certification for USA/Canada based on the WFME listing, or the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO for Germany. Concrete career planning should take place before the start of studies.

How does the recognition process for German Approbation work?

The path runs through the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) under § 3 BÄO at the relevant licensing authority in the respective federal state. The authority admits you to the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung), which tests your knowledge against the German medical programme. Once you pass it, the Approbation is granted. We recommend that German applicants discuss this pathway individually before making their study decision.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
