A 2018 archive post from dentistry studies in Sofia: how professors in Bulgaria really teach – plus today's perspective on it.

The question of what the professors on a medical programme in Bulgaria are really like was put to me again and again when I was a student. So I answered it in detail at the time — in a post on my student blog, which we are publishing here in the guide for the first time, supplemented by a perspective from today.

Editorial note: this post dates from my time as a student

Before we begin, some context: I wrote this text on 13 January 2018. At that point I was a dentistry student at the Medical University of Sofia and had written down on my private blog what readers were asking me again and again at the time.

  • Written: 13 January 2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Author at the time: Marcel Kloos, dentistry student (started 2015)
  • First published: marcel-in-bulgarien.de
  • Published here: 14 August 2026 in the Medschool Experts guide

The substance of the post is unchanged. I have only smoothed out the language and added a perspective from today at the end. It describes my personal perception as a student.

My view on my professors

The question of what the professors are like has been put to me more and more often recently. So here is a post about the quality of teaching and my experience on the medical programme at the university in Sofia.

Ten students per professor

Our relationship with our professors here is very close, because we are taught in groups of around ten students per professor or assistant professor. We sit in a seminar room where everyone gets their turn and where there is room for every question.

You can reach the teaching staff

That means you can approach a professor here during a break without any difficulty to ask questions. Some professors even hand out their mobile numbers. So there is more than enough opportunity for individual questions; you just have to use it.

The contact is personal

As at every university and on every programme, there are professors with whom you build a particularly good rapport, and others you have less to do with in day-to-day study. What is special here is certainly that small groups give you intensive contact with the teaching staff.

So much for the professors on the medical programme in Sofia.

My perspective eight years later

I completed my degree with the state examination in 2021 and have since guided more than 500 students in choosing where to study. Three things are clearer to me today than they were then.

Small groups are the real advantage of studying abroad

What I described in 2018 rather in passing is in truth the strongest argument for studying medicine abroad: seminar groups of eight to twelve students, oral examinations and early patient contact. That applies not only to Sofia but equally to locations such as Foča, Varna or Niš. Anyone who has to speak and argue for themselves every week understands the material faster and retains it longer.

Personal contact with teaching staff carries you through the programme

In a group of ten, the teacher knows your name, where you stand and what your strengths are. That is a motivation to arrive well prepared, and it makes oral examinations predictable. That is exactly what helped me through the demanding semesters.

In the end it is the individual department that decides

My experience was very positive, but it was mine. Every subject has its own character and its own organisation. Anyone choosing a location today should therefore speak to students who are currently in the clinical phase there and form their own picture.

The author's view

I read my own text from 2018 today with a smile. Back then I was in the middle of my studies and could not have said what would stand the test of time. Eight years later I know: the small group was the decisive factor, not the staff-student ratio on paper.

What I could not yet put into words back then: a degree is carried by the people who teach you. I had departments where I learned everything, and others where I simply worked my way through. That is the case at every university. Anyone who knows this looks early for the people they really want to learn from – and that is easier in Sofia than at many large faculties.

Summary

  • Marcel Kloos wrote this post on 13 January 2018 as a dentistry student at the Medical University of Sofia.
  • On the programme in Sofia in 2018, students were taught in groups of around ten people per professor or assistant professor.
  • In 2018, contact with teaching staff was personal: questions during breaks were possible at any time, and some professors even handed out their mobile numbers.
  • Marcel Kloos completed his dentistry degree with the state examination in 2021 and has since guided more than 500 students in choosing where to study.
  • From today's perspective, small-group teaching with eight to twelve students is the strongest argument for studying medicine abroad – including at locations such as Foča, Varna or Niš.
  • Anyone choosing a study location in 2026 should speak to students who are currently in the clinical phase there, because teaching quality is decided at the level of the individual department.

Eight years after this text, I would write the core message down in exactly the same way: what shapes a medical degree is the group size and the relationship with the teaching staff. Anyone looking for personal contact with professors, oral examinations and early patient contact will find precisely this learning culture abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions About Everyday Study Life in Sofia

How large are the study groups on the medical programme in Bulgaria?

In practical teaching, up to ten students usually work with one lecturer. That means everyone gets their turn, questions can be asked immediately, and the teaching staff know their students' names. For many people, that is the biggest difference from the lecture-hall routine they are used to.

What is contact with the professors like?

Personal and straightforward. Office hours, brief conversations after a practical session and follow-up questions by email are taken for granted. Anyone who shows interest often also gets the chance to take part in projects or shadow work in the clinic.

Is teaching conducted in English?

Yes, the international programme runs entirely in English, including examinations. Bulgarian is a compulsory subject in the first years of study and is needed for later patient contact.

How do the examinations work?

Many subjects are assessed through colloquia during the semester and oral examinations. That means continuous learning instead of a single big examination day – and it trains you to speak freely about medical content from the very beginning.

Is this 2018 archive post still current?

The general conditions have changed: tuition fees, the introduction of the euro in 2026 and the application process. The observations about small-group teaching and the personal relationship with the teaching staff still hold today, as students regularly confirm to me.

What should I look for when choosing a university?

Accreditation, group sizes in clinical teaching, the facilities of the hospitals, transport connections home, and the credit recognition figures for a later transfer. A university's reputation is ultimately decided at individual departments, not by the name on the diploma.

Can I already do academic work during my studies?

Yes. Student conferences, subject circles and collaboration with departments are open to you if you actively ask. That is one of the advantages of small year groups: anyone who volunteers is usually given a task.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
