Nigerian students: why many study medicine abroad, how the MDCN assessment exam and housemanship work for foreign graduates, and which countries fit.

Nigeria admits almost 12,000 students to medical schools each year. The federal government has set the goal of raising this to around 20,000 within three years. Even then, demand will remain far higher.

Every year, a very large number of young Nigerians choose Medicine and Surgery as their first choice in the UTME. The cut-off marks for Medicine are among the highest of any course, and admission also depends on post-UTME screening and the limited capacity of each faculty. Many excellent students wait years for a place, or never get one.

That is why many Nigerian families look abroad. Studying Medicine or Dentistry in another country is a realistic path back to practice in Nigeria, provided the rules of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria are part of the plan from day one. This guide explains why so many Nigerians study abroad, how the MDCN treats foreign degrees, which destination countries fit and what to plan for.

Why So Many Nigerians Study Medicine Abroad

The pressure on Nigerian medical schools comes from three directions. First, capacity: the number of places is limited by teaching hospitals, lecturers and accreditation quotas. Second, competition: Medicine and Surgery attracts some of the highest UTME scores every year. Third, time: academic calendars can be disrupted, which extends the duration of studies at home.

Studying abroad offers a predictable six-year programme, modern facilities and often English-language teaching. For many families, this certainty is worth a great deal.

Dentistry

Dental schools in Nigeria have even fewer places than medical schools. Studying Dentistry abroad is therefore an important route into the profession.

How a Foreign Degree Is Recognised in Nigeria

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) regulates the practice of Medicine and Dentistry in Nigeria. Graduates of medical and dental schools outside Nigeria follow a clear process.

A Recognised School

Your medical or dental school should be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by the authorities in its own country. The MDCN also carries out primary-source verification of qualifications obtained outside Nigeria, so your degree must be verifiable directly with the awarding institution.

The MDCN Assessment Examination

Foreign-trained medical and dental graduates must pass the MDCN assessment examination before they can register in Nigeria. The exam assesses whether your knowledge and clinical skills meet Nigerian standards. The MDCN holds it periodically and announces each session in advance.

Housemanship and Registration

After passing the assessment exam, graduates receive provisional registration and complete their housemanship, the one-year internship in an accredited Nigerian hospital. After successful housemanship, they apply for full registration. Graduates who meet the age criteria also complete the National Youth Service Corps.

Dentistry

The same framework applies to Dentistry: a recognised dental school, the MDCN assessment exam for dental graduates, a period of housemanship and full registration.

Which Destination Countries Suit Nigerian Students?

The right destination combines a recognised programme, English-language teaching and good preparation for the MDCN exam and for international opportunities.

Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic

These Central European countries have taught Medicine and Dentistry in English for decades. Their six-year programmes follow EU standards and welcome large international cohorts, including many students from Africa.

Bulgaria and Romania

Bulgaria and Romania offer English-language programmes with moderate living costs and EU standards. They are popular with Nigerian students looking for a European degree at a manageable budget.

The Caribbean

Caribbean medical schools follow the US model and prepare students for the USMLE. They are a good option for Nigerian students who also want to keep a US career open.

Other EU Countries

Further EU countries such as Slovakia, Lithuania and Latvia offer English-language programmes with smaller cohorts and a personal learning environment.

Practical Tips for Nigerian Students

Check the School's Listing First

Make sure your school is listed in the World Directory and recognised in its own country. This protects your eligibility for the MDCN assessment exam.

Keep Your Documents Verifiable

The MDCN verifies foreign qualifications at the source. Keep all transcripts and certificates organised and make sure your university can confirm them directly.

Prepare for the MDCN Exam Early

Students who revise Nigerian clinical priorities, such as tropical medicine and public health, during their studies are better prepared for the assessment exam.

Use Summers in Nigerian Hospitals

Clinical attachments at home during holidays keep you connected to the Nigerian health system and help you prepare for housemanship.

Think Internationally

An EU degree or a USMLE-oriented programme can also open doors beyond Nigeria. Many graduates keep several options open during their studies.

The Author's View

Nigerian students are among the most ambitious I meet. Many of them have excellent results, strong science backgrounds and clear career plans, and they simply need a place to start. Studying abroad gives them that start, together with an international network and exposure to different health systems.

What I emphasise in every consultation is preparation for the return. A recognised school, verifiable documents and early preparation for the MDCN exam make the path home smooth. Students who plan this from the beginning rarely face surprises at the end.

I am also encouraged by how quickly Nigerian students find their feet in Europe. They bring resilience, humour and a strong sense of community, and many of them become the students their classmates turn to for help. Families sometimes worry about the distance, but the combination of regular contact, student communities and good university support usually makes the first months much easier than expected.

Beyond that, the experience of training in another health system broadens a young doctor's perspective in lasting ways. Graduates return with new ideas, international contacts and a confidence that serves them throughout their careers, whether they practise in Lagos, Abuja or anywhere else in the world.

Nigeria needs more doctors and dentists, and you can be one of them. Book a consultation and let us find the right programme for you.

Conclusion

  • Nigeria admits almost 12,000 students to medical schools each year, with a government target of around 20,000.
  • The MDCN regulates Medicine and Dentistry and verifies foreign qualifications at the source.
  • Foreign-trained graduates pass the MDCN assessment examination, complete housemanship in Nigeria and then apply for full registration.
  • Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania and the Caribbean are popular destinations for Nigerian students.

Limited places at home do not have to end your medical ambitions. With a recognised programme and good preparation, you can return to Nigeria as a doctor or dentist, or build an international career. Book your free consultation and take the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I practise in Nigeria with a medical degree from abroad?

Yes. Foreign-trained graduates pass the MDCN assessment examination, complete housemanship in Nigeria and then register with the MDCN.

What is the MDCN assessment examination?

It is the exam the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria requires of medical and dental graduates trained outside Nigeria before registration. It checks whether knowledge and clinical skills meet Nigerian standards.

Do I need to do housemanship in Nigeria after studying abroad?

Yes. After passing the assessment exam, graduates complete a one-year housemanship in an accredited Nigerian hospital before full registration.

Which countries are popular with Nigerian medical students?

Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania and the Caribbean are among the most popular destinations.

Does the same apply to Dentistry?

Yes. Dental graduates trained abroad also pass the MDCN assessment exam and complete housemanship before full registration.

Do I need a JAMB or UTME score to study Medicine abroad?

No. European universities apply their own admission criteria, usually based on your WAEC or equivalent results in biology, chemistry and physics and, depending on the programme, an entrance exam or interview.

How many students are admitted to Nigerian medical schools each year?

Nigeria currently admits almost 12,000 students to medical schools each year. The federal government aims to raise this to around 20,000 within three years, but demand is expected to stay far higher.

Are the programmes abroad taught in English?

Yes. Most programmes for international students in Europe and the Caribbean are taught in English. Many universities also offer courses in the local language to support patient contact during clinical placements.

How long does a medical degree abroad take?

Most medical programmes in Europe last six years, with preclinical sciences followed by clinical training in university hospitals. Dentistry programmes usually take five to six years. Caribbean programmes follow a US-style structure.

What does primary-source verification mean?

The MDCN checks qualifications obtained outside Nigeria directly with the awarding institution. Studying at a well-organised, recognised university with reliable documentation makes this step straightforward.

Can I also build a career outside Nigeria?

Yes. An EU degree is a strong international qualification, and USMLE-oriented programmes prepare you for the US licensing process. Many graduates keep several options open while they study.

Is there support for Nigerian students living abroad?

In many destinations, Nigerian and African student communities help newcomers with housing, paperwork and everyday life. Universities with large international cohorts also offer dedicated support services.

Swiss-licensed dentist, founder and owner of Medschool Experts

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
