Studying medicine in Europe after 30 or 40: no legal age limit, six-year programme, around €110,000 all-in for Sofia and 16 to 31 working years as a doctor.

I was 24 when I enrolled in dentistry at the Medical University of Sofia in 2015. By German standards that made me a late starter: I had studied law first, and friends from school were already finishing their degrees. I graduated in 2021. Today I run Medschool Experts from Bern.

Starting at 30, 35 or 40 is the same decision with bigger numbers. No European faculty asks for your date of birth as a condition, the diploma is the same for everyone, and a doctor who qualifies at 46 still has about twenty years of work ahead. The age is not what needs planning. The money and the family do.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Age limits in Europe

There is none. No European Union country sets a legal maximum age for starting a medical degree in 2026. Directive 2005/36/EC, the law behind automatic recognition of medical diplomas across the EU, requires at least five years and 5,500 hours of training and says nothing about how old the student is. A graduate of 38 gets the same diploma and the same licence as a graduate of 24.

The English-taught programmes in Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina were built for international students, so a first-year group there looks different from a domestic class of school leavers. In my years at the Medical University of Sofia, 2015 to 2021, the canteen had people from more than 60 countries. Some came straight from school. Others had a degree or a job behind them. I was in the second camp, a former law student starting dentistry at 24.

Age changes the arithmetic, nothing else. You have fewer working years after graduation, you pay from savings where a 19-year-old relies on parents, and a partner or children may be part of the plan.

Timeline from 30, 35 and 40

Medicine in Europe takes six years, dentistry five to five and a half. Start medicine at 30 and you graduate at 36. Start at 40 and you graduate at 46. Specialist training in Germany, Austria or Switzerland adds five to six years, and it is a paid hospital job from day one.

Six-year medical degree, retirement assumed at 67. Specialist training counts as working years because it is paid employment.

My own calculation: six years of study, no repeated year, retirement at 67. Look at the last row. Sixteen years as a doctor is longer than many people stay in their first profession.

Costs and funding

Here is the sum I use for Sofia in 2026. Tuition at the Medical University of Sofia is 9,950 euros a year, so 59,700 euros over six years. I add 650 euros a month for living costs across all twelve months, which is 46,800 euros, and four flights home a year at about 150 euros each, another 3,600 euros. Total: around 110,000 euros. Faculties in Romania and in Foča in Bosnia and Herzegovina charge considerably less tuition.

At 35 there is a second number, and it is usually the bigger one. You stop earning. Take a job that pays 3,000 euros net a month: over six years that is 216,000 euros you do not receive. I use 3,000 only as an example. Put your own salary in and you know how much savings or family backing the plan needs.

The good news is the payment rhythm. Tuition is due per year or per semester, never as one lump sum. Most students over 30 I speak to combine savings with a partner's income and a loan from home, and they work during the long semester breaks. The funding routes are in the article on financing a medical degree abroad. All the Sofia figures are in the guide to medical school in Sofia.

Prior degree and credit transfer

Many applicants over 30 already hold a degree: nursing, pharmacy, biomedical science, physiotherapy. Those credits count. A medical faculty can recognise the courses you have passed and place you directly into a higher year.

We regularly place graduates into advanced years at top universities. Send the transcript first. The answer is in there, not in your age.

Family and relocation

European Union citizens may live and work in any member state. A partner can take a job in the country of study without a permit. Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest have international schools and English-speaking kindergartens. Students from outside the EU need a student visa and a residence permit, family members usually apply alongside, and Medschool Experts prepares that paperwork as part of the placement.

Or you commute. Most European programmes leave several months a year without lectures, and flights within Europe take two to three hours. Parents with children at home tend to fly more often than the four trips a year in my calculation.

Daily life as an older student

Practical teaching runs in small groups. At the Medical University of Sofia, seminars and practical courses have up to ten students per teacher, and most exams are oral. I sat those exams for six years. No examiner ever asked my age. They asked me to explain what was on the table.

Students in their thirties arrive with something useful: they know how to work. Fixed hours, a calendar, showing up prepared. What takes getting used to is the budget. Living on student money at 35 is a change, and it is worth agreeing on with your family before you start.

One more thing to expect. English-taught programmes include the local language, because patients on the ward speak it. In Sofia that is 420 teaching hours of Bulgarian over three years in human medicine.

Degree recognition

A medical diploma from an EU university is recognised automatically in all 27 member states under Directive 2005/36/EC, at any age. Medical licensing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland has no age cap either. I went through the Swiss recognition myself after Sofia. Outside Europe, graduates sit the licensing examination of the destination country, the USMLE for the United States for example.

Hospitals hire by vacancy and qualification. General practice, psychiatry and internal medicine look for doctors in every region. Ten years as a nurse or an engineer is not a gap in the CV. On a ward it is experience.

After 30 in other countries

In several countries a start in the mid-twenties or later is the normal case. In the United States medicine is a graduate degree: four years of medical school follow a four-year bachelor's degree, and the average first-year medical student is 24. Many are older.

The United Kingdom has offered four-year graduate-entry medical programmes since 2000, designed for people who already hold a degree. In Australia, universities such as Melbourne and Sydney teach medicine as a four-year graduate MD, so every student there has finished another degree first.

Germany reserves three per cent of its medical study places for applicants who already hold a degree. Seen from these four systems, a European classroom with a 32-year-old in it is nothing unusual. The six-year programmes in Europe simply take both groups, school leavers and graduates, in the same year.

Choosing a university

Four points matter more at 35 than at 19: the total cost of the whole programme, the flight home, the start date and whether earlier studies are recognised. Most faculties start in autumn. Some also take students in February, which can save half a year.

Compare the faculties on the universities page, then send us your documents. In a free consultation we tell you which of our 25+ partner universities fits your budget and your previous degree.

The author's view

I started in Sofia at 24, after law. Nobody there cared. In a year group drawn from 60 countries, with people who had flown in from Greece, Canada and the Emirates, the age on your passport is the least interesting thing about you.

If I were 35 and thinking about it today, I would ask three things before enrolling. What does the whole degree cost, living included? Where will I work afterwards, and is the diploma recognised there? When do I earn my first salary as a doctor? Write the answers down. If they hold, go.

My assessment: the people who lose most are not the ones who start at 38. They are the ones who think about it from 30 to 38. That is an opinion, not a statistic, but I have had the conversation often enough to stand by it.

Summary

  • No EU country sets a maximum age for a medical degree in 2026, and Directive 2005/36/EC contains no age rule.
  • Medicine takes six years: a start at 30 means graduation at 36, a start at 40 means graduation at 46.
  • A doctor who graduates at 46 has 21 working years until 67, specialist training included.
  • Six years at the Medical University of Sofia cost around 110,000 euros with living costs. Lost salary is the larger item for career changers.
  • A prior health or science degree can lead to entry into a higher year.

Conclusion

Studying medicine after 30 is a question of planning. The law does not stand in the way, the diploma is the same, and the working years that remain are enough for a full medical career.

The plan has three parts: the money for six years, the arrangement for family, and the university that recognises what you have already studied. We work through all three with you in a free consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Studying Medicine After 30

Is there an age limit for studying medicine in Europe?

No. In 2026 no European Union country sets a legal maximum age for enrolling in a medical degree, and Directive 2005/36/EC, which governs recognition of medical diplomas across the EU, contains no age rule. English-taught medical programmes in Europe enrol students in their thirties and forties every year.

How old will I be when I finish medical school if I start at 35?

A medical degree in Europe takes six years, so a student who starts at 35 graduates at 41. Specialist training in Germany, Austria or Switzerland adds five to six years of paid hospital work, which leads to a specialist title at 46 to 47 and leaves about 20 further years in the profession.

Can I study medicine at 40 or 45?

Yes. A student who starts medicine at 40 graduates at 46 and can work as a doctor for 21 years until the age of 67. A start at 45 leads to graduation at 51 and 16 working years. European medical faculties and licensing authorities apply no age cap.

How much does studying medicine in Europe cost for a mature student?

At the Medical University of Sofia a six-year medical degree costs around 110,000 euros in 2026 figures, made up of 59,700 euros in tuition, 46,800 euros in living costs and 3,600 euros for flights. Faculties in Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina charge lower tuition. Lost salary during six years of study comes on top.

Does my previous degree shorten the medical degree?

It can. Medical faculties can recognise completed courses from a degree in nursing, pharmacy, biomedical science or a related subject and place the graduate in a higher year. Which universities accept a specific degree depends on the individual profile, which Medschool Experts assesses in a free consultation.

Can my partner and children move with me?

Yes. Partners with European Union citizenship may live and work in any EU member state without a permit. Families from outside the EU apply for residence permits together with the student. Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest have international schools. Many students instead commute, because flights within Europe take two to three hours.

Will hospitals hire a doctor who graduates at 45?

Yes. Hospitals in Europe hire by vacancy and qualification, and the medical licence carries no age condition in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. General practice, psychiatry and internal medicine recruit in every region, and a first career in another field counts in the applicant's favour.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
