Study medicine in Europe without an entrance exam in 2026: how document-based admission works, what faculties check instead and how to secure a place in English.

Yes, you can study medicine in Europe without sitting an entrance exam. A number of faculties with English-taught programmes admit students on their school documents alone. The degree you get at the end is the same six-year medical degree, recognised across the European Union.

I run Medschool Experts from Bern and studied in Sofia myself from 2015 to 2021. The question I hear most in consultations is not about anatomy or money. It is this one: do I have to pass a test first? Often the answer is no.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Without an entrance exam: what it means

It means there is no test day. No biology paper, no chemistry paper, no ranking list published three weeks later. The faculty reads your documents and decides.

This is ordinary practice at a number of European medical faculties with English-taught programmes in 2026. They were set up for international students, and an applicant from Dubai, Milan or Hamburg cannot easily fly in for a three-hour paper. So these faculties moved the decision to what every applicant already has: a school record.

One thing stays the same everywhere. You need a school-leaving certificate that qualifies you for university in your home country.

What counts instead

Four things, in most cases:

  • The school-leaving certificate. It has to give access to higher education in the country that issued it.
  • Biology and chemistry. Faculties look at whether you took them and how you did.
  • English. A certificate, or schooling in English.
  • Sometimes an interview. Fifteen minutes online about why you want to be a doctor.

I saw early how much weight science subjects carry. At 16 I was at Shrewsbury School in England. Classmates there chose three science A-levels for their last two years, because medical schools read exactly those three lines of the certificate. The same logic applies here.

My assessment: the paperwork is where applications slow down, not the grades. A missing stamp delays more places than a weak mark in chemistry. That is an estimate from our daily work, not a statistic.

Timeline to a place

Plan three to six months from the first document check to the letter of acceptance. Most of that time goes into certified translations and the legalisation of your school certificate. The faculty's own decision is usually the quick part.

Most programmes start in autumn. Some also take students in February, which helps if you decide late. Start with the documents. Everything else waits for them.

Costs

Tuition for English-taught medicine in Europe ranges from about 3,500 euros to more than 18,000 euros a year in 2026. The country makes the difference: faculties in South-Eastern Europe sit at the lower end, Hungary, Latvia and Cyprus at the upper end. Living costs in most study cities in South-Eastern Europe come to 500 to 800 euros a month.

Whether a faculty tests applicants or not has no influence on the fee. The comparison of the lowest-priced locations is in the article on affordable medical schools in Eastern Europe, and the full picture across countries in the guide to studying medicine abroad.

Quality and recognition

The admission method does not touch the diploma. Directive 2005/36/EC requires at least five years and 5,500 hours of training for a medical degree to be recognised automatically in all 27 EU member states. An accredited faculty meets that standard with or without a test at the door.

The proving still happens. It happens in first year. I studied in Sofia, and most of my exams there were oral, one student and one examiner at a table. A good school certificate gets you the seat. Studying gets you through.

A faculty without an entrance exam is not giving anything away. It is giving you the first year to prove yourself.

Entrance tests in other countries

To see why this route is attractive, look at the alternatives. In the United States every applicant sits the MCAT, a test day of about seven and a half hours, after a four-year bachelor's degree. In the United Kingdom applicants take the UCAT, a two-hour computer test, before they even apply.

Austria holds its MedAT once a year, in July. More than 15,000 people register for roughly 1,900 places, so about seven in eight go home without one. Italy went the other way in 2025 and replaced the entry test for its Italian-language medical degree with an open first semester, after which a national ranking decides who continues.

Germany has no single test. The school grade decides, and a voluntary aptitude test can improve it. Five countries, five systems. Against that background, a faculty that reads your certificate and gives you an answer is the simplest of them all.

Your next step

Which faculties admit without an exam changes from intake to intake, and it depends on your certificate. We work with 25+ partner universities and know the current rules of each one.

Send us your school-leaving certificate. In a free consultation we tell you where you can start without an entrance exam, and what the place costs. The faculties are on the universities page.

The author's view

I understand the fear of the test. One morning, one paper, and a year is gone if it goes badly.

So I like the document route. It judges what you did over years. But I tell everyone the same thing before they sign: the work starts on day one. Most of my exams in Sofia were oral. You sit across from the examiner and explain. That is where a place is earned.

Take the place. Then earn it.

Summary

  • Several European medical faculties admit students to English-taught programmes without an entrance exam in 2026.
  • They decide on the school-leaving certificate, science grades and English, sometimes with a short interview.
  • The diploma is the same six-year degree and falls under Directive 2005/36/EC.
  • Plan three to six months from document check to acceptance letter.
  • Tuition ranges from about 3,500 euros to more than 18,000 euros a year.

Conclusion

No entrance exam does not mean no standard. It means the faculty judges twelve years of school instead of one morning in a test hall, and then lets the first year of medicine do the rest.

If that route suits you, the next step is small. Send us your school certificate and we tell you in a free consultation where you can start.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medicine Without an Entrance Exam

Can I study medicine in Europe without an entrance exam?

Yes. In 2026 several European medical faculties with English-taught programmes admit students without a written entrance exam. They decide on the school-leaving certificate, the grades in biology and chemistry and proof of English. The medical degree takes six years and is recognised across the European Union.

Is a medical degree without an entrance exam worth less?

No. The admission method has no effect on the diploma. Directive 2005/36/EC requires at least five years and 5,500 hours of medical training for automatic recognition in the EU, and every accredited faculty meets that standard whether it tests applicants on entry or not.

What do universities look at if there is no exam?

Faculties without an entrance exam assess the school-leaving certificate, the final grades in biology and chemistry, English proficiency and in some cases a short online interview. A complete and correctly translated set of documents matters more than any single grade.

How long does admission without an entrance exam take?

From the first document check to the letter of acceptance, plan three to six months. Translations and legalisation of school certificates take the most time. Most faculties start in autumn and some also admit students in February.

How much does medicine in English cost in Europe?

Tuition for English-taught medicine in Europe ranges from about 3,500 euros to more than 18,000 euros a year in 2026, depending on the country and the faculty. Living costs in most study cities in South-Eastern Europe are between 500 and 800 euros a month.

Which universities in Europe have no entrance exam?

The list changes from year to year, because faculties adjust their admission rules for each intake. Medschool Experts works with 25+ partner universities and knows the current rules for each of them. A free consultation shows which faculties fit a specific school certificate.

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
