Studying medicine in the Caribbean and want to switch to Europe? We arrange the study transfer from Antigua, Barbados, Curaçao, St. Lucia and more.
Where Do German-Speaking Students Study Medicine in the Caribbean?
- Antigua — to the location article
- Barbados — to the location article
- Curaçao — to the location article
- St. Lucia — to the location article
- St. Vincent — to the location article

The programmes are typically split between Basic Sciences on the island and Clinical Rotations in the USA or the UK. Admission runs through application documents and interviews, not through a school grade average.
Why Do Students Transfer from the Caribbean to Europe?
The Overall Cost
Tuition fees, flights, cost of living on an island, and expensive clinical rotations abroad add up considerably over the course of the programme. Foča, by comparison, costs 3,500 EUR per academic year.
Distance and Family
A flight home takes an entire day depending on the island. Over four or five remaining years of study, that is a real factor – especially when something happens at home.
Recognition Is Settled
Caribbean degrees are not from the EU, and are therefore treated as third-country degrees in Germany. Since the reform of March 2026, this is no longer a disadvantage: from 1 November 2026, the oral knowledge examination under § 3 of the Bundesärzteordnung applies as the standard pathway to a nationally valid Approbation. Details are in the article Approbation and Recognition.
How Does the Study Transfer Work?
We handle the transfer for you. Our partner universities include Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Niš (Serbia), and Malta.

Where Can You Transfer to from the Caribbean?
University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
State faculty with its own university hospital, human and dental medicine in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 EUR per academic year, intake in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Credit assessments here are typically very favourable – transferring students usually enter a high year of study. To the Foča study guide.
MediCampus Europeo, Malta
EU location with English as the official language – linguistically the most straightforward option for anyone coming from an English-language programme. Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, Maltese MFHEA licence, transfer from the second year of study, 14,500 EUR per year with single payment, intake in October. To the Valletta location article.
University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)
Large state university with its own university hospital, human medicine in English, 360 ECTS, degree MD. 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year. To the Niš location article.
The full list of all NC-free options can be found in the study transfer article on Bulgaria.
How High the Credit Assessment Falls Is Decided Case by Case
All the pathways listed here are designed to enable the highest possible credit assessment for you through us – with no or minimal loss of study time. However, this only becomes binding once your documents have been reviewed. As a rule of thumb: generally no more than two examinations may be outstanding, and their ECTS points must not exceed a certain upper limit, in order for a transfer into the next higher year of study to be possible. What is achievable in your individual case is clarified in the free consultation.
What the Transfer Means Financially
The Caribbean programmes, including their clinical sections, sit at the upper end of the international price range. Foča costs 3,500 EUR per academic year, Niš 6,000 EUR, Malta 14,500 EUR; living costs in Foča and Niš are realistically 450 to 500 EUR per month, and the journey home takes hours rather than an entire day. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place is obtained, you incur no costs.
Why You Should Get Advice as Early as Possible
- Places are limited and are allocated in order of receipt of complete documents.
- Deadlines are running: Malta starts in October, Foča in November, Niš takes intake quarterly.
- The credit conversion takes preparation time. Credits, transcripts, and apostilles from overseas take longer – the earlier we start, the more reliably the entry into the next academic year can be secured.
Reviewing your documents takes a few days and costs nothing. Book a free study consultation.
The author's view
Caribbean medical schools are built for the American job market – and for that purpose, they work well. But those who knew from the outset that they wanted to work in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland have often taken the long route without realising it.
The good news: the path back to Europe is open, and the semesters already completed are not lost. The earlier the transfer happens, the less study time it costs.
Conclusion
- A study transfer to Europe is possible from Antigua, Barbados, Curaçao, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Anguilla.
- Completed subjects are transferable; we convert credits to ECTS.
- Most common destinations: Foča (3,500 EUR/year), Niš (6,000 EUR), MediCampus Europeo Malta (14,500 EUR).
- Initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is success-based.
The Caribbean is a good pathway – when the career goal matches. Those who want to come to Europe should transfer early.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Study Transfer from the Caribbean
From which islands do you facilitate the transfer?
From Antigua, Barbados, Curaçao, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Anguilla – and on request from other Caribbean medical schools.
Are US-oriented credits recognised in Europe?
Yes. We convert them to the ECTS system and match them against the curriculum of the target university. The decisive factors are the content and scope of the subject.
Is my Caribbean degree recognised in Germany?
Yes, through the oral knowledge examination. Caribbean degrees are treated as third-country degrees – since the reform of November 2026, the knowledge examination under § 3 of the Bundesärzteordnung is the standard pathway for these, after which the nationally valid Approbation follows.
Do I lose study time when I transfer?
Generally not, if the transfer is planned in good time and documents are submitted in full.
Which year of study can I enter?
To Foča and Niš typically the second to fifth year, to Malta from the second year. The specific year is determined after converting your credits.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. The initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is only charged on successful placement.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
