Study Transfer from Latvia: from Riga and Jelgava to a New University

Σύντομη απάντηση
Studying medicine or veterinary medicine in Riga or Jelgava and it's not working out? We arrange the study transfer to Foča, Niš, Malta and more.
Which Universities in Latvia Are Relevant for German Speakers?
- Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) — human and dental medicine in English, very large international cohort. To the location article.
- University of Latvia, Riga — public comprehensive university with a medical faculty and English-language programme.
- LBTU Jelgava — veterinary medicine in English, one of the few addresses for veterinary medicine without NC. To the location article.
None of these places is allocated on the school-leaving grade. Tuition fees are approximately 12,000 to 16,000 EUR per academic year. A regional overview can be found in the article Medicine and dentistry in the Baltic states.
Why Do Students from Latvia Transfer to Another University?
One Subject Becomes a Bottleneck
Baltic curricula are densely paced and strictly sequential. Those who fail a foundational subject often lose an entire academic year rather than a semester.
Large Cohort, Little Personal Attention
Riga has one of the largest international cohorts in Europe. For some that is an advantage; for others it means little personal supervision over six years. A transfer to a smaller faculty solves this in many cases.
Costs, Climate, Distance
12,000 to 16,000 EUR per academic year plus living costs in Riga add up. For some, the long dark winter months and the distance from home also play a role — these are real factors over six years of study.
How Does the Study Transfer from Latvia Work?
Simply: you tell us where you stand, and we do the rest. Send us your profile — what you have studied in Riga or Jelgava, which subjects you have passed, and which countries would be an option for you. We then check individually at which university, in which country, we can place you and where you can count on a start.
We deliberately publish no checklists, requirement lists or dates here. They differ from one university and one intake to the next, and an outdated list is the fastest way to lose a semester. What we do instead is look for your highest possible point of entry — frequently one of the final study years — through our network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. The review of your situation is free and non-binding, and you stay enrolled in Latvia while we plan.
Where Can You Transfer To from Latvia?
University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
One of our core locations, for which we hold representation in German-speaking countries. State faculty with its own university hospital, human and dental medicine in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 EUR per academic year, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Placements here are typically very high — transfer students generally enter a high year of study. To the Foča study guide.
University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)
Large public university with its own university hospital, human medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year. To the Niš location article.
MediCampus Europeo, Malta
Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, human medicine in English, Maltese MFHEA licence, mild climate and English as official language. A frequent destination for transfer students from the second year onwards, 14,500 EUR per year with single payment. To the Valletta location article.
The complete list of all NC-free options can be found in the Study transfer article on Bulgaria.
How High the Entry Point Turns Out Depends on the Individual Case
All paths mentioned here are designed to give you the highest possible year placement through us — without or with minimal loss of time. How high that is depends entirely on what you have already completed, which is why it only becomes concrete once we have looked at your situation. That look costs nothing, and it is the difference between hoping and knowing.
What the Transfer Means Financially
Latvia costs approximately 12,000 to 16,000 EUR per academic year. Foča costs 3,500 EUR, Niš 6,000 EUR. With a transfer in the third year, that is around 34,000 to 50,000 EUR less in tuition fees over the remaining four years, plus the lower living costs of 450 to 500 EUR per month. Our placement fee is success-based.
Why You Should Seek Advice as Early as Possible
- Places at the smaller faculties are limited — the earlier we know about you, the more options are still open.
- Being enrolled is the better starting position — hence the consultation before the next resit, not after it.
- The earlier we look, the higher the entry point we can usually arrange for you.
Looking at your situation takes a few days and costs nothing. Book a free study consultation and we will tell you honestly at which university in which country we can place you.
Author's Opinion
Riga is a well-organised location with high teaching quality — but the cohort is so large that you have to organise yourself there. Those who can do that are in good hands.
But those who notice they learn better in a smaller faculty should not see that as a weakness but as information. A transfer is a location decision — and that is best made early.
Conclusion
Latvia is a strong location — but no location suits everyone, and noticing that is information, not failure. From Riga and Jelgava a transfer is possible for human medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine, and what you have already passed travels with you.
Tell us where you stand and where you would like to go, and we will tell you at which university in which country we can place you, at the highest entry point that is realistic for you — often one of the final study years — and where that start is genuinely plannable. Our network of official partner universities covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, so there is usually more than one good answer.
The first conversation and the review of your situation cost nothing, and our placement fee is success-based. Book a free study consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions about Study Transfer from Latvia
From which Latvian universities do you arrange transfers?
From Riga Stradiņš University, the University of Latvia in Riga and LBTU in Jelgava.
Will I lose study time during the transfer?
As a rule, no, if we look at it in time. What you have passed travels with you, and we aim for the highest possible entry point.
I am studying veterinary medicine in Jelgava — are there target universities for that too?
Yes. For veterinary medicine we work with our own partner universities; which ones fit is clarified in the initial consultation based on where you stand.
Do I have to be deregistered in Latvia first?
No. You stay enrolled while the transfer is being planned.
Which year of study can I enter?
To Foča and Niš typically from the second to fifth year, to Malta from the second year onwards. Where exactly you land depends on your own record — we check that for you.
What do I need for a place at one of your partner universities?
That depends on your record, the university and the intake, which is why we do not publish a list here — it would be out of date within a year. Send us your profile and we will check individually where we can place you and where a start is plannable.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. Initial consultation and the review of your situation are free; the fee is only charged upon successful placement.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
- Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
- Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
- Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
- Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
- Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
