Study Transfer from Portugal: from Porto, Lisbon and More to a New University

Σύντομη απάντηση
Studying medicine in Porto, Lisbon or elsewhere in Portugal and it's not working out? We arrange the study transfer to Foča, Niš, Malta and more.
Where can you study medicine in Portugal?
- Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Porto — private university offering medicine and dentistry; places here are not allocated through the German Numerus clausus. To the location article.
- Universidade do Porto — largest public medical faculty in the north.
- Other state faculties — including in Lisbon, Coimbra, Braga (Minho) and Faro (Algarve).
The programme lasts six years and leads to an EU degree. Instruction is predominantly in Portuguese; at the private university partly in English.
Why do students transfer out of Portugal?
Portuguese in the clinical phase
From the third year onwards, language determines how much you actually absorb at the bedside. Those who find themselves merely observing will find better conditions at a university with fully English-language clinical training.
The total bill at private universities
Over six years of study, private tuition fees add up to a high six-figure sum. When financing falls through, changing location determines whether the degree continues.
One subject becomes the bottleneck
Failing an exam often means losing an entire academic year. What you have already passed travels with you; an outstanding subject is completed at the new university.
How do we find the right university for you?
You will not find a checklist, a document list or a set of dates on this page, and that is deliberate. What each university wants to see differs from one institution to the next and changes from year to year — and a move planned around an outdated detail costs exactly the time you were trying to save.
What we do instead is simple. Tell us where you stand: what you have studied so far, what you have already passed, and which countries you could imagine living in. We look at that individually and then tell you at which university and in which country we can place you — and where we can get you in predictably rather than on a hope.
We always aim for the highest possible entry point, so that you continue rather than start over; in many cases that means one of the later study years. Through our network of official partner universities we have the widest choice of places in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, among them Foča in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Niš in Serbia and Malta. And you stay enrolled in Portugal while we do it — you plan the move from a secure position, not from nothing.

Where can you transfer to from Portugal?
MediCampus Europeo, Malta
For those who want to stay in the south: campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, medicine in English, Maltese MFHEA licence, English as the everyday official language. 14,500 EUR per year with a lump-sum payment, academic year beginning in October. To the Valletta location article.
University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 EUR per academic year, academic year beginning in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. Placements here are generally very high — students who move usually continue in an advanced year of study. To the Foča study guide.
University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)
Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year. To the Niš location article.
The full list of all NC-free options can be found in the study transfer article on Bulgaria.
The level of placement depends on the individual case
All pathways mentioned here are designed to achieve the highest possible year placement for you through us — with no or minimal loss of time. What that means concretely differs from person to person, and we would rather look at your situation than publish a rule that fits nobody. What is realistic in your case is something we tell you in the free consultation.
What the transfer means financially
Tuition fees at private Portuguese universities are significantly higher than what Foča charges at 3,500 EUR and Niš at 6,000 EUR per academic year. Over four remaining years of study, that is a five-figure difference, plus lower living costs of 450 to 500 EUR per month. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place is secured, no costs arise for you.
Why you should seek advice as early as possible
- Places are limited. In higher years, a place only comes up when one becomes free — the earlier we know about you, the more options remain open.
- The academic years start at different times. Malta begins in October, Foča in November, Niš runs on a quarterly rhythm. The more lead time we have, the more calmly the move can be arranged.
- Being enrolled is the better starting position — so have the conversation before the next resit rather than after it.
Looking at your situation takes a few days and costs nothing. Tell us what you have studied so far and where you could imagine going, and we will tell you at which university and in which country we can place you. Book a free study consultation.
The author's view
Portugal is a beautiful country with good clinics, and those who learn the language have a strong programme there. The mistake I see most often is the assumption that Portuguese can be picked up "on the side" — in the clinical phase, that rarely suffices.
Those who recognise this early have all options open. Those who wait it out lose years. A transfer is a location decision, not a failure.
Summary
- A study transfer from Portuguese faculties is possible — for both medicine and dentistry.
- What you have already passed travels with you; those who plan in time usually lose no academic year.
- Most common destinations: MediCampus Europeo Malta (14,500 EUR/year), Niš (6,000 EUR), Foča (3,500 EUR).
- The initial consultation and the assessment of your situation are free; the fee is success-based.
Conclusion
Portugal is a good location — but language is decisive, and noticing early that it is not working out is worth more than any amount of holding on.
We deliberately publish no checklists and no requirement lists, because they differ from one university to the next and change from year to year. Tell us instead where you stand — what you have studied, what you have passed, and which countries you could imagine — and we will look at it individually. We then tell you at which university and in which country we can place you, and where we can get you in predictably. We check the highest possible entry point for you, often in one of the later study years, and through our network of official partner universities we have the widest choice of places in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. The first step is a free consultation.

Frequently asked questions about study transfers from Portugal
From which Portuguese universities do you arrange transfers?
From all faculties — including Fernando Pessoa Porto, Universidade do Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra, Minho and Algarve.
I studied in Portuguese — will my achievements count?
In principle yes. What you have already completed travels with you regardless of the language you studied it in, and how much of it can be built on differs from case to case. That is exactly what we look at individually.
Will I lose study time when transferring?
Generally not, if the move is planned in good time. We always aim for the highest possible entry point, so that you continue rather than start over.
Do I have to give up my place in Portugal first?
No. You stay enrolled while we look for the right university for you — that is a significantly better starting position.
Which year of study can I enter?
We always check the highest possible entry point for you; in many cases that means one of the later study years. What is realistic depends on your individual profile, which is exactly what we look at in the free consultation.
What do you need from me for a first assessment?
Just your profile: what you have studied so far, what you have already passed, and which countries you could imagine. We deliberately publish no document checklist, because requirements differ from university to university and change from year to year. We tell you what is needed once we know where we can place you.
What does the consultation cost?
Nothing. The initial consultation and the assessment of your situation are free; the fee is only due upon successful placement.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
What Marcel does at Medschool Experts
Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.
Topics Marcel writes about
