The English programme in Dushanbe lasts five years. What that means for recognition, and your study transfer options to Europe.

Tajikistan regularly appears on international recruitment portals as a low-cost destination for an English-language medical degree. On closer inspection, the situation looks rather different from what the advertising suggests — and specifically on one point that is decisive for later medical licensure in Germany.

The English-language programme at Avicenna University in Dushanbe is explicitly listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as a programme for nationals of India and Pakistan — and it lasts only five years. The regular six-year programme leads to the degree of “Tabib”.

If you are studying there and looking for a pathway to Europe: we facilitate study transfers to locations where you can continue your studies with the highest possible year placement.

Which medical universities exist in Tajikistan?

State institutions

Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU), Dushanbe — the most established institution, in operation since 1939. Three programmes: General Medicine in Tajik, Russian, and English (6 years, degree: Tabib), a separate English-language programme for nationals of India and Pakistan (5 years, MBBS), and Paediatrics in Tajik and Russian. Accredited since April 2022 by the IAAR agency.

Tajik National University (TNU), Faculty of Medicine, Dushanbe — listed in the World Directory since December 2023, six-year structure. An explicitly English-language programme cannot be officially verified.

The ATSMU branch in Khujand is listed in the World Directory as no longer in operation — yet it continues to be advertised.

Private institutions

Medical Social Institute of Tajikistan, Dushanbe — in operation since 2022, teaching in Tajik, Russian, and English, degree: Tabib after five years plus one compulsory year of internship. Accredited since May 2024.

What is often advertised but cannot be verified

Khatlon State Medical University in Danghara is offered on numerous portals as a study destination, but cannot be found in the World Directory of Medical Schools. That absence is worth knowing about before anyone books a plane ticket on the strength of a portal listing.

One further point: the website of Tajik National University states that it is “officially accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education”. This is factually impossible — the WFME does not accredit universities; it recognizes accreditation agencies. A listing in the World Directory also does not explicitly constitute recognition.

Why do students transfer from Tajikistan?

The five-year duration of the English programme. This is the most serious issue. In Germany, non-EU graduates no longer have their duration and contact hours compared on paper; they take the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). A five-year curriculum is at a structural disadvantage in this comparison, regardless of the quality of teaching.

The target-group restriction. Because the English-language programme is designed for India and Pakistan, it is not even certain whether and how German nationals can be admitted.

Lack of price transparency. None of the Tajik universities publishes tuition fees for international students. All figures in circulation come from recruitment agents.

The language of clinical practice. On the wards, Tajik and Russian are spoken.

How we work out where you can continue

We do not publish checklists, document lists or dates here. What a receiving faculty wants to see differs from university to university and from year to year, and a list that was right last autumn quietly stops being right. What matters is your profile.

Send us your transcripts, your enrolment certificate and your school leaving certificate, together with the countries you would consider. We look at them personally and tell you which academic year is realistic for you, at which university in which country we can place you, and where we can get you in reliably instead of leaving you to gamble a year on an open application.

Because we do this every day, we know what to ask your current university for on your behalf, and we handle that part with you. Our network of official partner universities covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, and for students already partway through a degree we always check the highest possible entry point.

Where you can transfer to

Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina) — one of our core locations, around €3,500 per academic year, English-language programme, six years. Foča generally grants very high year placements. The transfer also brings you onto the six-year structure that German authorities expect.

University of Niš (Serbia) — around €6,000 per academic year, English-language, six years.

MediCampus Europeo Malta — around €14,500 per academic year, EU member state. The degree is automatically recognized under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive; a knowledge examination is not required.

How high the year placement turns out depends on the individual case

All three locations enable the highest possible placement with no or minimal loss of time through us, and entry into the final two years is frequently achievable. Every case is assessed individually, which is why no blanket rule is worth much here. Tajik transcripts are often not issued in ECTS, so the groundwork takes some care — that is our part of the job, not yours.

What the transfer costs

A comparison is difficult because no Tajik university publishes official fees for international students. The figures cited on portals cannot be verified.

What is certain: Foča costs €3,500, Niš €6,000, Malta €14,500 per academic year — each in writing and verifiable. Whatever one-off costs a move brings with it, we put them on the table in the initial consultation so that nothing surprises you later.

Why early advice pays off

The difference between five and six years of study cannot be remedied after the fact. Those who address this issue in the first or second year can switch to a six-year structure without major loss. Those who discover it at the end face the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) with a structural disadvantage.

So the sooner you send us your profile, the more options we still have to work with. Tell us where you are studying, what you have completed and which countries you would consider, and we will tell you where we can place you and where we can get you in reliably. The initial consultation is free of charge and non-binding — book a free consultation.

The author's view

Tajikistan is an example of how important it is to read the primary source rather than the advertising page. The World Directory states in black and white that the English-language programme is intended for nationals of India and Pakistan and lasts five years. On the portals it says “6-year MBBS for international students”.

Avicenna University is not a diploma mill — it has been teaching since 1939 and is IAAR-accredited. But it is not a location I would recommend to anyone who wants to obtain medical licensure in Germany later. If you are already there, it is not the end of the world — the early years of study can be credited. You just should not put off the conversation until the fifth year.

Summary

  • Two state and one private institution; the branch in Khujand is no longer in operation but continues to be advertised.
  • The English-language programme in Dushanbe is intended for India and Pakistan and lasts only five years.
  • The regular six-year programme leads to the degree “Tabib”, taught in Tajik, Russian, and English.
  • No university publishes fees for international students.
  • Target locations: Foča from €3,500, Niš €6,000, MediCampus Europeo Malta €14,500 per academic year — all six-year programmes.

Conclusion

Tajikistan is structurally difficult as a study destination for anyone aiming at medical licensure in Germany, mainly because of the five-year duration of the English programme. If you are already there, that is not the end of the road — but it is a reason to act early rather than late.

Send us your transcripts, your enrolment certificate and the countries you would consider. We will tell you at which university in which country we can place you and where we can get you in reliably, checking the highest possible entry point — frequently into the final two years — across our network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. Frequently asked questions about study transfers from Tajikistan

Does the medical programme in Tajikistan last five or six years?

Both, depending on the programme. The regular programme with the degree “Tabib” lasts six years. Avicenna University's own English-language programme lasts five years and leads to the MBBS.

Why is the five-year duration a problem?

In Germany, non-EU graduates no longer have their duration and contact hours compared on paper; they take the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung). A five-year curriculum is at a structural disadvantage in this comparison.

Is the English programme open to European students at all?

That is genuinely unclear. The World Directory lists it explicitly as a programme for nationals of India and Pakistan, which makes it a shaky basis for planning a career in Europe. Rather than chasing that question, send us your profile and we will tell you where in Europe we can place you reliably.

What does studying there cost?

No Tajik university publishes fees for international students. All figures in circulation come from recruitment agents and are unverified.

Is Tajikistan WFME-recognized?

For Tajikistan, the agencies IAAR and ECAQA are WFME-recognized; Avicenna University has been IAAR-accredited since April 2022. A university itself can never be “WFME-accredited” — such statements are factually incorrect.

Will I lose semesters when transferring?

The aim is always the highest possible year placement with no or minimal loss of time, frequently into the final two years. Every case is decided individually, so send us your transcripts and we will tell you what is realistic for you and at which partner university in which country we can get you in reliably.

What does the consultation cost?

Nothing. The initial assessment is free of charge and non-binding: you send us your transcripts and your preferred countries, and we tell you at which university in which country we can place you and where we can get you in reliably. Book a free consultation.

Swiss-licensed dentist, founder and owner of Medschool Experts

Marcel Kloos is the founder and owner of Medschool Experts, a placement agency for medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy degrees abroad. Since 2021 the team has secured more than 500 study places at over 25 partner universities in Europe and worldwide.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
