Transfer from Thessaloniki back to Germany: What Is Realistically Possible

Moving on from medicine in Thessaloniki? What a transfer into a higher semester realistically involves and how we work it out with you.

Transferring from Thessaloniki to a German university is a natural next step for many medical students after their first semesters abroad. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is one of the Greek locations where German students regularly begin their preclinical or clinical studies, and moving on from there is a well-trodden path.

What that move looks like in practice, though, depends far more on your own academic record than on any general rule. This article explains what that means, and why the most useful thing you can do is have someone look at your actual record rather than at a table.

Last reviewed: August 2026.

What a transfer from Thessaloniki actually looks like

How far you get in a German programme after time at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki comes down to what you have actually completed and how closely those courses line up with the German curriculum in content. Two students who spent the same number of semesters in Thessaloniki can land in different semesters in Germany, simply because their records read differently.

That is why you will not find a semester table on this page. Any figure published here would be wrong for most of the people reading it, and being wrong about something this consequential costs a year.

What does hold generally is that the Greek grading scale is not the deciding factor. What matters is the content of the individual courses you have passed. Which is precisely why the useful conversation starts with your transcript, not with a rule of thumb.

Why we do not publish figures or checklists

Recognition practice, required paperwork and the calendar around a transfer differ by federal state, by university and by year, and they change. A list copied off a website is one of the most reliable ways for a well-qualified student to end up applying for the wrong semester, in the wrong place, at the wrong moment.

So we do the opposite. You send us your record, we read it properly, and you get a concrete answer instead of a general rule: which universities are realistic for you, in which semester, and where we can get you in on a timetable you can plan around.

Where can you land, and in which semester?

In principle, a higher-semester place in medicine can be sought at any German university that offers the programme. In practice, the locations differ considerably in how regularly transfer students actually come in, and in how well a particular semester fits what a given faculty has available. Some places take transfer students routinely; others only now and then.

One structural point applies everywhere and is worth knowing early: entering directly into the concluding year of the degree is not possible at any university, because the awarding institution carries responsibility for the final stage of training. That principle holds across Europe. Everything before it is open.

Worth adding: the Greek degree itself is automatically recognised in Germany as an EU qualification under Directive 2005/36/EC when it comes to professional licensure. That part of your future is secure regardless of where you complete the degree — a point many students worry about unnecessarily.

A free consultation gives you a first orientation on your options. Treat it as the start of a conversation, not a verdict.

It is also worth not fixing on a single university. Keeping several suitable locations in view in parallel widens your options noticeably, and comparing them is exactly the kind of work that goes much faster with someone who does it every week.

How do you find the right university — and get in?

Send us your profile: your Thessaloniki records, what you have completed so far, and where you would like to end up. We read it properly and come back with the concrete answer — which university, in which country, we can place you at, and where we can get you in on a plannable timetable.

Behind that answer sits the largest selection of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. If a move within our partner network turns out to suit you better than a return to Germany, we look for the highest possible point of entry, and students frequently come in during the last two years of a programme rather than repeating work they have already passed.

In a free consultation we go through your Thessaloniki records together and talk about realistic target locations. We do not make promises. We do give you an honest read on your starting position — and usually more options than you expected to have.

The author's view

From my advising practice, I repeatedly see how uncertain students from Thessaloniki feel about what happens next when they start thinking about moving on. That is understandable, and in my experience it is also unnecessarily pessimistic. Many expect the worst case, when what their record actually supports is a good deal better than they assume. The Aristotle University is a solid starting point, and students from there regularly have more options open to them than they had allowed themselves to hope for.

What I advise students from Thessaloniki is simple: have someone look at your record early rather than guessing from general rules found online. It is worth it. A realistic picture of your own position, produced by somebody who sees these cases every week, is the single most useful thing you can have before you make a decision this size — and it is exactly what a first conversation with us is for.

Conclusion

There is exactly one useful answer to the question of where a transfer from Thessaloniki can take you, and it is not a general one. It comes out of your own record.

So send it over. Tell us what you have completed in Thessaloniki and where you would like to study next, and we will come back with which universities can take you, in which country and in which semester, and where we can get you in on a timetable you can plan around — across medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. Where a move within our partner network fits you better, we look for the highest possible point of entry rather than sending you backwards.

A free consultation costs you one conversation and gives you a realistic picture of what is genuinely open to you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Transferring from Thessaloniki to Germany

How far along will I be after time in Thessaloniki?

There is no fixed figure, and any number published on a website would be wrong for most readers. It depends on what you have actually completed. Send us your transcript and we will tell you what is realistic in your case, and at which universities.

What do I need in order to transfer?

That differs by federal state, by university and from year to year, which is why we do not publish a list here. Send us your profile and we will come back with which universities can take you, in which semester, and where we can get you in on a plannable timetable.

Is the degree from Thessaloniki recognised in Germany?

Yes. As an EU degree it is automatically recognised for licensure purposes under Directive 2005/36/EC. That is professional recognition after graduation and it is secure — a separate matter from where you sit within a programme while you are still studying.

Is a transfer treated the same at every German university?

No. Locations differ noticeably in how regularly transfer students come in and how well a given semester fits what a faculty has available. That is exactly why it pays to compare several places in parallel rather than fixing on one.

Can I transfer into the final year of study?

No, and that applies throughout Europe. The awarding university carries responsibility for the concluding stage of training, so that part of the degree stays closed to transfer students. Everything before it is open.

Do I have to finish my studies in Thessaloniki first?

No. A transfer does not require a completed degree. What counts is the academic work you have already done.

I would rather move to another university abroad than return to Germany. Is that possible?

Often, yes. Our network of official partner universities covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, and for students with credits behind them we look for the highest possible point of entry — frequently in the final two years of a programme.

How does Medschool Experts help specifically?

We look at your Thessaloniki record, tell you which universities in which countries can realistically take you and in which semester, and then handle the process with you. You are not left to work out on your own what belongs where.

What does a consultation cost?

The initial consultation is free of charge. We go through your situation and the options genuinely open to you.

When should I get in touch?

As soon as you are seriously considering it. The earlier we look at your record, the more target locations are still realistically in play — and the less of the planning you have to carry alone.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
  • Study dentistry, veterinary medicine or pharmacy in Europe in English
  • Tuition fees and living costs at medical schools in Europe and worldwide
  • Recognition of foreign medical degrees in the EU, Switzerland, the UK and the US
  • Transferring between medical schools and returning home into a higher semester
