Σύντομη απάντηση
Near East University medicine costs €13,515 a year in 2026/27, yet Morocco has frozen Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024. How to transfer to Europe.
What is Near East University, and what does it offer medical students?
Near East University (Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi) was founded in 1988 in Nicosia, called Lefkoşa in Turkish, and is the largest university in Northern Cyprus. The university has 19 faculties and more than 30,000 students from 134 countries. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are all taught in English.
The Faculty of Medicine was founded on 20 July 2008. Its six-year programme is organ- and system-based: years one to three integrate basic and clinical sciences, years four and five are clinical clerkships, and year six is the internship. Clinical training takes place at Near East University Hospital on the campus. The university hospital has 55,000 square metres, 209 patient rooms, 30 intensive care beds and eight operating theatres. In January 2024 the university announced international accreditation for the faculty.
The Faculty of Dentistry dates from 2007. Its five-year programme has three pre-clinical and two clinical years, with patient work at the Near East Dentistry Hospital. Pharmacy is also offered in English over five years. The university is state-accredited in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and in Turkey. The facilities are substantial.
Is a Near East University medical degree recognised in 2026?
In 2026, a medical degree from Near East University is recognised in Turkey, where the university is state-accredited, but elsewhere the answer depends on your country. Morocco has frozen equivalence since May 2024, several Middle Eastern states stopped recognising TRNC institutions in 2020, and many others decide case by case.
The reason lies outside the lecture hall. The TRNC is recognised as a state only by Turkey, and UN Security Council Resolution 541 of 1983 called its declaration legally invalid. By June 2026, recognition still varied by country and institution. Politics decides, not grades.
Every university in the north faces the same question, as our overview of the Northern Cyprus recognition crisis explains.
| Country | Situation for Near East University graduates, 2026 | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | Recognised; the university is state-accredited | 2026 |
| Morocco | Equivalence frozen since May 2024 | 2026 |
| Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, United Arab Emirates | No longer recognising TRNC institutions | 2020 |
| Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina | Neither degrees nor transfer students accepted | 2026 |
| Other countries | Decided by the national authority, often case by case | 2026 |
Is a Near East University degree recognised in Morocco?
No, not at the moment. Since May 2024, Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education has issued no equivalence for degrees from Northern Cyprus universities, Near East University included, following a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are among the affected fields, and around 3,000 to 3,500 Moroccan students and graduates are caught up in the freeze.
By March 2026, an estimated 3,500 students and graduates were affected by the freeze. Protests followed: in Rabat in March 2026, outside parliament on 22 April 2026, and a sit-in in July 2026. There were talks about a solution in July 2026. As of September 2026, nothing has been announced.
For a Moroccan student in year two or three, waiting means paying more fees without knowing the outcome. A solution might come. It might not.
What does this mean for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Near East University?
For students at Near East University, the recognition problem weighs most on the regulated health professions: a doctor, dentist or pharmacist needs a recognised degree before any licence, internship or specialist training at home. Students in the six-year medicine and five-year dentistry programmes have the most time and money at stake in 2026.
The earlier you are, the more you still have to pay towards a degree your country may refuse. The later you are, the more you have already achieved. The receiving university reviews your passed modules from Near East University subject by subject.
Dentistry students should plan early. Clinical places in dental schools are limited, and years four and five are built around patient work. Timing matters. Pharmacy students pay less in Nicosia thanks to the published special scholarship, but their recognition question is exactly the same.
Can you transfer from Near East University to a university in Europe?
Yes. In 2026, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students at Near East University can transfer to other universities in Europe, and Medschool Experts has already placed several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus this year. Your passed exams form the basis, and the new university decides which of them it credits.
A degree from an EU member state brings clarity. Under Directive 2005/36/EC, medical qualifications from EU countries are recognised automatically across the European Union. Outside the EU, the target is a university whose degree your country accepts, checked before you move.
Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist for medical study transfers. We frequently achieve high year placements, often in year 4 or 5, at top universities. Which year you can enter depends on your record and the receiving university; we give you a realistic assessment after a free review. Our transfer services cover the whole process.
Two Nicosias, two legal systems. Near East University is in the northern part of Nicosia, in the TRNC. The Republic of Cyprus in the south is an EU member state, and its universities fall under EU rules. Degrees from Near East University do not benefit from automatic EU recognition.
Should you stay at Near East University or transfer?
Whether you should stay at Near East University or transfer comes down to one question: does the country where you want to work accept the degree for licensing in 2026? If it does, and you have that in writing, staying can be a sound choice. If it does not, or nobody can tell you, planning a transfer now protects the years you have already studied.
Ask your ministry or medical council directly. Forum posts are no substitute.
If the answer stays unclear, a free review keeps your options open. Read how other students changed university on our student stories page.

Book a Free Transfer ConsultationWhy can Near East University students no longer transfer to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina?
In 2026, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus universities, and that includes Near East University. There is no public announcement to point to. This is what we see in Medschool Experts' placement work in 2026, and it applies to medicine, dentistry and pharmacy alike.
For years, the Balkans were a popular next step for students leaving Nicosia. That door has closed. If anyone offers a Near East University student this route in 2026, ask for written confirmation from the receiving university before paying anything.
The realistic routes now lead to other universities in Europe whose degree your home country accepts. Our university overview shows the kind of programmes we work with, and the right match for you comes out of a personal consultation.
What does staying at Near East University cost if your degree is not recognised?
At Near East University, English-taught medicine costs €13,515 a year in 2026/27, including VAT and the administrative fee. Over six years that comes to €81,090 at current prices, before rent, flights and living costs. English-taught dentistry costs €12,465 a year, or €62,325 over five years.
The fee list excludes medicine and dentistry from its 50% scholarship for international students. Pharmacy shows a special scholarship that lowers the annual total to €4,800.
| Programme (English) | Years | Annual tuition | Per year incl. VAT and admin fee | Whole programme at 2026/27 prices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medicine | 6 | €12,600 | €13,515 | €81,090 |
| Dentistry | 5 | €11,600 | €12,465 | €62,325 |
| Pharmacy | 5 | €8,600 (€4,300 with special scholarship) | €4,800 with special scholarship | €24,000 with special scholarship |
Take a medical student about to start year three in autumn 2026. Four years remain: 4 × €13,515 = €54,060 at 2026/27 prices. If the home country still refuses the degree, that money buys a diploma that cannot be used there. That is the real risk. A transfer puts the same years into a programme whose degree is accepted.
Which Near East University students should act now?
Near East University students should act now if they come from Morocco or another country that currently does not recognise Northern Cyprus degrees, if they had planned a move to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina, or if their home authority cannot give them a written answer on recognition in 2026.
- Moroccan students of medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, whatever their year.
- Students in years one to three, who still have most of the fees ahead of them.
- Students in the clinical years who need a recognised degree to start specialist training at home.
- Students who had a transfer to the Balkans in mind.
Students who only plan to work in Turkey are in a different position, since Turkey recognises the degree. Everyone else should check now. The wider background is in our guide to Northern Cyprus degree recognition in 2026, and a first conversation with us is free: contact Medschool Experts.
The author's view
I started studying dentistry at 24, in English, at the Medical University of Sofia, and graduated in 2021. Starting later than most of my classmates taught me how expensive time in a degree is. Every semester costs money and a piece of your life, and you want it to count. Today I am a federally recognised dentist and the founder and owner of Medschool Experts.
When students from Near East University contact us, some of them apologise, as if they had chosen badly. They did not. They picked a large campus with its own hospital and teaching in English. What changed was politics. Having placed more than 500 students abroad, I give them one piece of advice: judge a degree by where it lets you work, and move while your semesters still carry weight.
Summary
- Near East University, founded in 1988 in Nicosia, teaches medicine (six years), dentistry and pharmacy (five years each) in English.
- The degree is recognised in Turkey; elsewhere, recognition in 2026 depends on the country.
- Morocco has frozen equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024.
- As of 2026, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina no longer accept degrees or transfer students from Northern Cyprus.
- Medicine at Near East University costs €13,515 a year in 2026/27; four remaining years come to €54,060.
Conclusion
Near East University offers a large campus, its own hospital and teaching in English. None of that decides whether your home country accepts the degree. That decision lies with governments, and for many students in 2026 it has gone against them.
