Transfer from the University of Kyrenia: Continue Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy in Europe (2026)

Σύντομη απάντηση
University of Kyrenia medicine costs €7,650 a year in 2026–27, yet Morocco froze Northern Cyprus degrees in 2024. How to transfer to a university in Europe.
What is the University of Kyrenia, and which health degrees does it teach in English?
The University of Kyrenia (Girne Üniversitesi) is a private university in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus. It received state approval in Northern Cyprus in March 2013 and in Turkey in January 2014. For 2026–2027 it offers English-taught Medicine (six years), Dentistry (five years) and Pharmacy (five years).
The university describes itself as the sister institution of Near East University. Its campus stands on a 27-acre coastal site in Karakum and opened in November 2015. Today it runs 14 faculties, among them the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmacy. It is state-accredited in Northern Cyprus.
Clinical teaching has a home on site. The Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital opened on 15 November 2016, and the Faculty of Medicine had started its first academic year in October 2016. Dentistry students train at the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Dental Hospital. The Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
The medical programme carries 360 ECTS credits: an integrated preclinical phase in years one to three, clinical clerkships in years four and five, and an internship year.
One point causes confusion. The University of Kyrenia is not Girne American University. They are separate institutions.
Is a University of Kyrenia degree recognised in 2026?
A University of Kyrenia degree is accepted in Northern Cyprus and in Turkey, where the university is state-accredited. Outside those two, recognition in 2026 depends on each country's authority and has become less predictable, because only Turkey recognises the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a state.
The root is political. UN Security Council Resolution 541 (1983) called the declaration of the TRNC legally invalid, and most governments still follow that line. By June 2026, recognition still varied by country and institution.
Some countries have already drawn a line. Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education has issued no equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024, after a directive from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. By 2026, about 3,000 to 3,500 students and graduates were affected, in fields including medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. As early as December 2020, Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates no longer recognised TRNC institutions.
Do not mix up the two Cypruses. Universities in the Republic of Cyprus, in the south, are in the EU. Under EU Directive 2005/36/EC, medical degrees from EU member states are recognised automatically across the EU. A degree from Kyrenia, in the north, does not follow that automatic route.
The wider picture for every university in the region is in our overview of the Northern Cyprus degree recognition crisis.
What does the recognition gap mean for University of Kyrenia medicine, dentistry and pharmacy students?
For University of Kyrenia students in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, recognition decides whether they may practise at all. All three are regulated professions: in almost every country, a doctor, dentist or pharmacist needs a licence, and that licence depends on a national authority accepting the degree.
A business graduate with a doubtful diploma can often still find work. A doctor cannot. Without recognition there is no licence, no specialist training and no clinical job, however good the teaching was.
Time makes it harder. The medical degree at the University of Kyrenia lasts six years, and dentistry and pharmacy last five. Each semester adds fees, rent and months of your life to a qualification whose value abroad is unclear. It also adds passed exams, and those exams are what a transfer builds on.
Students from Morocco feel this most sharply today. Protests took place in Rabat in March 2026, outside parliament on 22 April 2026, and as a sit-in in July 2026. Talks about a solution took place in July 2026. Nothing has been announced.
Can you transfer from the University of Kyrenia to another university in Europe?
Yes. In 2026, Medschool Experts has already moved several students from English-taught programmes in Northern Cyprus to other universities in Europe. A transfer from the University of Kyrenia works best when your transcripts and course descriptions are reviewed early, before you pay for another year.
Medschool Experts is the world's leading specialist for medical study transfers. We frequently achieve high year placements, often year 4 or 5, at top universities. Your exact entry year depends on your record, so we only name it after a free review of your documents.
The work starts with what you have already passed. We compare your University of Kyrenia modules with the curricula of universities whose degree your home country accepts. Many of them are in the EU, where the degree then benefits from automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC. We then handle the application with you and guide you until you are enrolled.
You keep the credit you earned. You lose the uncertainty. Our transfer services explain each part of the process, and our university overview shows the kind of programmes students move to.

Universities in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither degrees nor transfer students from Northern Cyprus, and that includes students from the University of Kyrenia. Anyone who counted on either country as a fallback now needs a different plan.
There is no public announcement to point to. What we see in our placement work is clear. The doors are shut.
This matters because a fallback that fails costs more than time. A student who waits for a Balkan place and then misses the next intake elsewhere may lose a full academic year. Plan with routes that are open today, and check them against your own country's rules.
What does it cost to stay at the University of Kyrenia until graduation?
At the University of Kyrenia's 2026–2027 rates, a year of English-taught medicine costs €7,650 after the standard 50% scholarship, including VAT and the administrative fee. English-taught dentistry costs €7,125 a year and pharmacy €4,147. A medical student who has just finished year two still faces €30,600 in tuition.
| Programme | Language | Length | Annual list fee | Scholarship | Annual total paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medicine | English (also Turkish) | 6 years | €12,600 | 50% | €7,650 |
| Dentistry | English | 5 years | €11,600 | 50% | €7,125 |
| Dentistry | Turkish | 5 years | €9,400 | 50% | €5,970 |
| Pharmacy | English | 5 years | €4,300 | 20% | €4,147 |
Annual total paid: tuition after scholarship plus VAT and administrative fee, for 2026–2027. Payments are made per semester; a €105 registration fee is charged once.
A worked example. You finished year two of medicine in summer 2026. Four years remain: 4 × €7,650 = €30,600 in tuition alone. A dentistry student at the same point has three years left, or €21,375. A pharmacy student has €12,441 to go.
Add rent, food and flights for every one of those years. These figures assume the 2026–2027 prices and your scholarship stay unchanged, which no student can take for granted.
The larger cost is hidden. It is a degree your home country might not accept.
Which University of Kyrenia students should act now?
University of Kyrenia students should act now if their home country has frozen or questioned Northern Cyprus degrees, if they want to work in Europe, or if they have no written confirmation from their own ministry. Students in the first four years of medicine or dentistry have the most to protect.
- Moroccan students in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, while equivalence stays frozen.
- Students from Jordan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq and the UAE, given the non-recognition since 2020.
- Anyone planning Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina as a next step.
- Anyone who wants to practise in the EU without years of uncertain recognition procedures.
- Anyone relying on verbal assurances rather than a written statement from their ministry.
Timing counts. Every finished semester can still be reviewed for credit, but a gap year cannot. The country-by-country details for the whole region are in the Northern Cyprus recognition guide.
The author's view
I began dentistry in English at the Medical University of Sofia at 24, older than most of my classmates, and graduated in 2021. Starting late teaches you to count years carefully. Today I am the founder and owner of Medschool Experts and a federally recognised dentist, and we have placed more than 500 students at universities abroad.
When a student from Kyrenia sends me a transcript, I look first at what is already passed, not at what might be lost. A coastal campus with a hospital next door can be a fine place to learn. My question is simpler: which country will let you work with this diploma? If you cannot get that answer in writing from your ministry, get a second option in writing from us.
Summary
- The University of Kyrenia, state-approved in Turkey since 2014, teaches Medicine (6 years), Dentistry (5 years) and Pharmacy (5 years) in English.
- Its degrees are accepted in Northern Cyprus and Turkey; elsewhere, recognition in 2026 depends on each country.
- Morocco has frozen equivalence for Northern Cyprus degrees since May 2024, affecting about 3,000 to 3,500 students and graduates.
- Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina accept neither the degrees nor transfer students.
- Four more years of medicine at 2026–2027 rates cost €30,600 in tuition; a transfer review costs nothing.
Conclusion
The University of Kyrenia offers a coastal campus, its own hospitals and English-taught health degrees at clear prices. The open question is where its diploma will be accepted, and that answer now depends on politics, not on your grades.
If your country's position is unclear, protect the exams you have already passed and look at a transfer while they still count in full. Book a free, no-obligation consultation with Medschool Experts.
Frequently asked questions about transferring from the University of Kyrenia
Is the University of Kyrenia the same as Girne American University?
No. The University of Kyrenia (Girne Üniversitesi) and Girne American University are two separate institutions, both located in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus. The University of Kyrenia was approved in 2013 and 2014, describes itself as the sister institution of Near East University, and runs the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital. Check the exact name on your enrolment documents before you contact any ministry or transfer adviser.
Is a medical degree from the University of Kyrenia recognised in Morocco?
Not at present. Morocco's Ministry of Higher Education has issued no equivalence for degrees from Northern Cyprus universities, including the University of Kyrenia, since May 2024. About 3,000 to 3,500 students and graduates were affected in 2026, across medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Talks took place in July 2026, but no solution has been announced.
Is the University of Kyrenia accredited?
The University of Kyrenia is state-accredited in Northern Cyprus and has been approved in Turkey since January 2014. Its Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Those approvals do not guarantee recognition in other countries, because only Turkey recognises Northern Cyprus as a state.
How much does medicine at the University of Kyrenia cost in 2026–2027?
The annual tuition fee for the six-year medicine programme at the University of Kyrenia is €12,600 in 2026–2027. After the 50% scholarship, the total paid is €7,650 a year, including VAT and the administrative fee, payable per semester. A one-off registration fee of €105 applies. Can I transfer from the University of Kyrenia to Serbia or Bosnia and Herzegovina?

No. The first consultation with Medschool Experts is free and without obligation for students from the University of Kyrenia and every other university in Northern Cyprus.
