Transfer from Pécs back to Germany: how credit recognition for higher medicine semesters works and how we find the highest possible entry point.

You are studying medicine in Pécs and wondering whether and how a transfer back to Germany might work. This is a question many students ask at some point during their studies – some as early as after two semesters, others just before or after their pre-clinical exam. The transfer is feasible. It does, however, need to be planned around your own situation, not around a generic recipe.

Pécs is home to one of Hungary's oldest medical faculties and has been training international students for decades. Those who want to return to Germany do not start from scratch; instead, they have completed semesters recognised towards a higher subject semester. Hungary is an EU member state. This means that a later degree from Pécs is automatically recognised for licensure purposes. How many semesters are recognised in any individual case is decided by the competent state examination office, on the basis of what you have actually completed.

This article shows what experience-based values students from Pécs can expect, how the German allocation of higher-semester places works, and where a transfer is realistic at all. What it does not do is list requirements, documents or dates – those differ per university and per year, and we check them individually for the students we support. Last reviewed: August 2026.

How many subject semesters from Pécs are recognised in Germany?

Students from Pécs University, Faculty of Medicine who have completed two semesters are typically recognised for 1 subject semester, after three semesters for 1 to 2, after four semesters for 4, and after five semesters likewise for 4. These are experience-based values from transfer processes we have accompanied. They are not a guarantee. The decision rests with the competent state examination office in each individual case.

Completed semesters in PécsExperience-based recognition
2 semesters1 subject semester
3 semesters1 to 2 subject semesters
4 semesters4 subject semesters
5 semesters4 subject semesters

What these values look like across all our locations, and where they come from, is set out in the overview Transferring back to Germany: credit recognition and higher subject semesters. What they mean for you personally depends on which modules you have actually passed in Pécs – which is why we look at each case individually rather than publishing a formula.

Why higher-semester places in Germany are the bottleneck

In principle, a higher subject semester in medicine can be studied at any German university that runs the programme – provided a place has become free. That is the whole difficulty. Places in higher semesters only exist where someone else has left, and how many appear in a given semester fluctuates from year to year and from faculty to faculty. Nobody can predict it as a blanket figure, and no ranking of universities changes that.

German universities also allocate what does become free according to a fixed order: hardship cases first, then place-changers, then lateral entrants, and only then a lottery. You count as a place-changer if you were already enrolled in the same subject at another university – in Pécs, for instance – and simply want to change location without changing subject. That classification usually puts you in a better position than a classic lateral entrant, but it is still a queue for a scarce good.

One structural limit applies everywhere: entry directly into the final year of study is not possible at any European university, because the final institution bears training responsibility for that year. A transfer is therefore realistic up to the fifth year of study in human medicine and up to the fourth year in dentistry.

Where does that leave you – and what do we do about it?

We deliberately do not publish requirement lists, document checklists or dates on this page. They differ from one federal state and one university to the next, they move every year, and a list that was right last summer quietly misleads this one. Following an outdated list is how students lose a semester.

Instead, send us your profile: your transcripts and module content from Pécs, how far you have got, and where you would like to end up. We check what your highest possible point of entry is – in Germany and, just as importantly, across our partner universities elsewhere, where an entry in one of the final study years is often possible. Then you know what is realistic instead of what is theoretically conceivable.

Medschool Experts holds the largest selection of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, which is why a transfer conversation with us rarely has only one answer. In a free consultation you can get a first orientation from your current stage of studies in Pécs, and a free consultation gives you the individual picture.

How does Medschool Experts support a transfer from Pécs?

Medschool Experts guides students from Pécs through the whole route: from the first realistic assessment of what can be recognised, through the work with the competent authorities, to the choice of university and subject semester. The experience gathered from many transfers already accompanied is what makes expectations realistic – and it saves you time, effort and, not least, semesters.

It was founded by Marcel Kloos. He is today a federally recognised dentist in Switzerland and the founder of Medschool Experts in Bern. His path began in 2015, at the age of 24, when he took up the study of medicine and dentistry in Sofia, completing it in 2021.

A free consultation is usually the simplest first step. It costs nothing. It helps to assess your own situation and to see which subject semester, at which university, is realistically within reach from your current stage of studies in Pécs.

The author's view

For me, Pécs is one of the underrated locations when it comes to a later transfer. This surprises many people. The university has a long tradition of training international students, and this is reflected in clearly structured study processes – an advantage when transcripts and module descriptions later have to speak for a student in Germany. The experience-based values after four and five semesters in particular show that persevering a little longer in Pécs pays off for many students before tackling the transfer.

What I would say to anyone in Pécs thinking about it: talk to someone about your specific situation earlier than feels necessary. The difference between one and two recognised subject semesters, or between a place in Germany and a plannable entry at a partner university abroad, is almost never a matter of luck – it is a matter of knowing your own case well enough. That observation comes from accompanying a great many transfers, and it is exactly what a first conversation is for.

Conclusion

A transfer from Pécs back to Germany is possible, and it is rarely a step back to square one: completed semesters count, and the degree from Hungary is recognised for licensure across the EU in any case. What no article can tell you is the one thing you actually want to know – which university will take you, and at which semester.

Send us your transcripts and module content and we will check the highest possible point of entry for you, in Germany and across our network of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. Very often there is a faster and more plannable route than the one people expect, frequently with entry in one of the final study years.

Frequently Asked Questions: Transferring from Pécs to Germany

Can I obtain German medical licensure with a degree from Pécs?

Yes. Hungary is an EU member state, and your degree is automatically recognised under Directive 2005/36/EC, provided you complete your studies in Pécs in the regular manner.

Do I need to pass a separate examination for the transfer?

No. No additional examination is required for a higher subject semester. What counts is what you have already completed in Pécs – your academic results and your module content.

How many semesters will be recognised in my case?

That depends on the modules you have actually passed, not simply on how long you have been enrolled. Our experience-based values give a first orientation; the binding decision is made individually. Send us your transcripts and we will tell you what is realistic before you build a plan on it.

Does time in Pécs count as subject semesters or merely as study time?

Both can be relevant. Subject semesters are awarded on the basis of specific module content, not simply on the basis of calendar time elapsed.

Is a transfer still worthwhile shortly before the pre-clinical exam?

In principle, yes – the experience-based values are highest after four and five semesters. At the same time, places in correspondingly high subject semesters are scarcer, so it is worth having your chances assessed early rather than late.

Can I also transfer directly into the final year of study?

No. Entry directly into the final year of study is excluded throughout Europe, as the final institution bears training responsibility for that year. A transfer is realistic up to the fifth year in human medicine and up to the fourth year in dentistry.

What if a place in Germany does not work out?

Then Germany is not the only option. Through our partner universities we regularly find a plannable entry point abroad, often in one of the final study years, for students who would otherwise wait. We look at both routes in the same conversation.

Does Medschool Experts also help with selecting the right university?

Yes. In the free consultation we go through which universities and which subject semesters realistically suit your situation from Pécs – in Germany and within our partner network for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine.

Does my credit recognition change if I repeat a semester in Pécs?

It can. What matters are the modules actually passed and documented, not solely the number of semesters completed. If you are in that situation, it is worth having it looked at before you decide anything.

What does the consultation cost?

Nothing. The first assessment of your situation is free and without obligation – you simply tell us where you stand in Pécs and where you want to go, and we tell you honestly what we can arrange.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.
