The location
Western Balkans University offers Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in English, plus bachelor programmes in Dental Technology, Nursing, Imaging Technology, Physiotherapy and Laboratory Technology. Tirana is the capital of Albania and has grown over recent years into one of the liveliest cities in South-East Europe — with a renovated centre, a thriving café and cultural scene and living costs well below those in Western Europe.
The Adriatic coast near Durrës is around 40 kilometres away and can be reached in about 40 minutes, so beach days are possible even midweek. Tirana airport is 17 kilometres from the city centre; Wizz Air flies from Memmingen, Dortmund, Karlsruhe and Nuremberg in around 2 hours 15 minutes.
On recognition
Albania is not a member of the European Union. For professional licensing in Germany, the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) therefore applies instead of automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC. This is a well-established route — but it belongs in your planning from the very start.

Tirana itself surprised me. The city has changed enormously in just a few years, and its proximity to the Adriatic makes everyday life more pleasant than the map would suggest — even though Tirana is not on the sea but 40 kilometres from it.
And as with every location outside the EU, the same rule applies: anyone who wants to work in Germany later should understand the recognition route before enrolling.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path
Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree.
