Transfer from Zagreb back to Germany: What Is Realistically Possible

Transferring from Zagreb to a higher medicine semester in Germany: what is realistic, what depends on your own record, and how Medschool Experts supports you.

Transferring from the University of Zagreb, School of Medicine, back to a German university is a natural next step for many medical students after their first years abroad. Students who started in Croatia often want to study closer to family, friends, or their future career prospects in Germany from a certain point onwards. A transfer to a higher semester is possible — but what it looks like in practice depends far more on your individual academic record than on any general rule. This article explains what that means for students coming from Zagreb.

Last checked: August 2026.

What a transfer from Zagreb actually looks like

A transfer back to Germany is not a single event but the result of how your own academic record lines up with the German programme structure. Two students who spent exactly the same number of semesters in Zagreb can end up in different semesters in Germany, purely because of which subjects they have completed and how their record reads.

That is why you will not find a semester table on this page. Any figure we published here would be wrong for most of the people reading it, and being wrong about something this consequential is expensive.

What can be said about Zagreb specifically is encouraging. In Medschool Experts’ internal experience, the Zagreb curriculum is regarded as well comparable with the German pre-clinical and clinical structure. That is not true everywhere: at the neighbouring Croatian location of Split, for example, some subjects sit late in the curriculum, which can complicate matters for a transfer. That particular problem does not arise in Zagreb.

Why we do not publish checklists or figures

Recognition rules, required paperwork and the calendar around a transfer differ by federal state, by university and by year, and they change. A list copied off a website is the single most common reason a well-qualified student ends up applying for the wrong semester, at the wrong place, at the wrong moment.

So we do the opposite of publishing a checklist. You send us your record, we look at it properly, and you get a concrete answer instead of a general rule. That answer covers which universities are realistic for you, in which semester, and where we can get you in on a timetable you can actually plan around.

Where can you land, and in which semester?

In principle, a higher-semester place in medicine can be sought at any German university that offers the programme. In practice, the locations differ considerably in how often transfer students actually come in, and how well a particular recognised semester fits what a given faculty has available. Some places take transfer students regularly; others only occasionally.

One structural point applies everywhere and is worth knowing early: entering directly into the concluding phase of the degree is not possible at any German university, because the awarding university carries responsibility for the final stage of training. The same principle applies across Europe. Everything before that is open, and where exactly you land is what we work out with you.

A free consultation gives you a first orientation on your personal transfer options. It is a starting point for the conversation, not a verdict.

It is also worth not fixing on a single university. Keeping several suitable locations in view in parallel widens your options considerably, and that comparison is exactly the kind of work that is much faster with someone who does it every week.

How do you find the right university — and get in?

Send us your profile: your Zagreb records, what you have completed so far, and where you would like to end up. We read it properly and come back with the concrete answer — which university, in which country, we can place you at, and where we can get you in on a plannable timetable.

Behind that answer sits the largest selection of official partner universities for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. If a transfer within our partner network turns out to be the better route for you, we look for the highest possible point of entry, and students frequently come in during the last two years of a programme rather than repeating work they have already passed.

Precisely because no blanket figures exist for Zagreb, an individual look at your academic record is worth having. In a free consultation we go through your Zagreb certificates together and talk about realistic target locations. We do not make promises. We do give you an honest assessment of your starting position — and, in most cases, more options than you expected to have.

The author's view

Marcel Kloos started his own studies in 2015 in Sofia, at the age of 24, and knows the view from outside a study-abroad experience well. He sees Zagreb today as one of the locations whose curriculum maps cleanly onto the German pre-clinical and clinical phases. This shows time and again. That is exactly what tends to make things easier for many students later on, even though each case is looked at individually.

What matters to him personally is honesty over promises. Anyone thinking about moving on from Zagreb should get their record looked at early rather than guessing from general rules found online. In his view, that is precisely where the greatest lever lies for a successful transfer.

Conclusion

A transfer from Zagreb is a question with exactly one useful answer, and it is not a general one. It is the answer that comes out of looking at your own record.

So send it to us. Tell us what you have completed in Zagreb and where you would like to study next, and we will come back with which universities can take you, in which country and in which semester, and where we can get you in on a timetable you can plan around — across medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine. Where a transfer into our partner network fits you better, we look for the highest possible point of entry rather than sending you backwards.

A free consultation costs you one conversation and gives you a realistic picture of what is open to you.

Frequently asked questions about transferring from Zagreb to Germany

How many semesters from Zagreb are recognised?

There is no fixed figure, and any number published on a website would be wrong for most readers. It depends on your individual record. Send us your transcripts and we will tell you what is realistic in your case, and at which universities.

What do I need in order to transfer?

That differs by federal state, by university and from year to year, which is why we do not publish a list here. Send us your profile and we will come back with which universities can take you, in which semester, and where we can get you in on a plannable timetable.

Is a transfer treated the same at every German university?

No. The locations differ noticeably in how often transfer students actually come in and how well a given semester fits what a faculty has available. That is exactly why it pays to compare several places in parallel rather than fixing on one.

Do I need to officially complete my studies in Zagreb before transferring?

No. A transfer does not require a completed degree from Zagreb. What matters is the academic work you have already done.

Can I transfer into the final year of study?

No, and that applies throughout Europe. The awarding university carries responsibility for the concluding stage of training, so that part of the degree stays closed to transfer students. Everything before it is open.

Is Zagreb a good starting point for a later transfer?

In Medschool Experts’ experience, yes. The Zagreb curriculum is regarded as well comparable with the German pre-clinical and clinical structure, which tends to make matters simpler than at locations where individual subjects sit late in the programme.

I would rather change university abroad than come back to Germany. Is that possible?

Often, yes. Our network of official partner universities covers medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine, and for students with credits behind them we look for the highest possible point of entry — frequently in the final two years of a programme.

How does Medschool Experts help specifically?

We look at your Zagreb record, tell you which universities in which countries can realistically take you and in which semester, and then handle the process with you. You are not left to work out on your own what belongs where.

What does a consultation with Medschool Experts cost?

The initial consultation is free of charge. We go through your situation and the options that are genuinely open to you.

When should I get in touch?

As early as you are seriously considering it. The earlier we look at your record, the more target locations are still realistically in play — and the less of the planning you have to carry alone.

Study medicine abroad: Marcel's own path

Born in Stuttgart, Marcel started his degree late: at 24 he enrolled at the Medical University of Sofia, Faculty of Dental Medicine, and graduated in 2021 from the English-language programme. He went through the same steps his clients face today — nostrification of school certificates, entrance interviews, finding a flat in Sofia and later the recognition of a foreign degree. In Switzerland he completed the federal recognition procedure and holds a Swiss dental licence.

What Marcel does at Medschool Experts

Today Marcel lives in Bern and runs Medschool Experts full-time. He visits every partner university in person, negotiates placement agreements directly with faculties and deans, and leads the free consultations in which applicants learn at which university they can start next semester. His YouTube channel on studying medicine abroad has helped thousands of applicants compare universities, costs and recognition.

Topics Marcel writes about

  • Study medicine abroad without an entrance exam: universities, costs and admission
