Comenius University Bratislava, Faculty of Medicine
Comenius University Bratislava, Faculty of Medicine teaches in English in Bratislava and leads to the M.D. degree. Tuition fees are approximately EUR 13,000 per year; the degree is automatically recognised in the EU.
The Faculty of Medicine at Comenius University in Bratislava is the most traditional medical training institution in Slovakia. It was founded in 1919 alongside the university and has trained doctors without interruption ever since. It is a state faculty, not a private institution — this distinguishes it clearly from private medical programmes in Spain or Portugal. The General Medicine degree runs in parallel in Slovak and in English; for you as a prospective German student, the English-language programme is the relevant route. Admission is not determined by your school-leaving grade but by a written entrance examination in biology and chemistry.
What Defines the Faculty
Bratislava is the capital and at the same time the country’s medical centre. The faculty works with several major hospitals in the city, so teaching and patient care are in close proximity. More important than any ranking, however, is another point: the faculty has decades of experience with international cohorts. German-speaking students are not an unusual occurrence there but have long been a regular part of the intake, and the faculty is well acquainted with the questions that arise for a later return to Germany.
The structure is traditional: the early years are dominated by anatomy, histology, physiology and biochemistry, followed by the clinical subjects with bedside teaching. Anyone looking for a strongly modular, problem-oriented curriculum of the kind offered by some German model programmes will not find it here. The programme is content-heavy, examination-intensive and demands persistence — especially in the first two years, which by experience is also when most students drop out.
Where the Limits Lie
Two things deserve a sober look. First, language: teaching is in English, but conversations with patients in the hospital take place in Slovak. Slovak language courses are therefore part of the curriculum, not an optional extra. Anyone who lets them slide will have a real problem in the clinical years. Second, costs: the programme is fee-paying, and the fee falls due in each of the six years, with living costs and travel on top.
The entrance examination is also a serious filter. It is not a formality but a substantial multiple-choice test for which you prepare over several months. Admission is based solely on the score achieved.
Who This Location Suits
Bratislava is a good fit if you are looking for a state-funded, Europe-wide established medical degree without an NC, are willing to study for an entrance examination, and can manage an independently structured life abroad. Medschool Experts advises on exactly this pathway when you want to compare several locations objectively.

Entrance Examination Instead of School-Leaving Grade
Admission is determined by the score achieved in the written entrance examination. Biology and chemistry are tested in multiple-choice format: 100 questions per subject, 200 questions in total, four answer options each, no negative marking for wrong answers. Your school-leaving grade plays no role in the ranking. The faculty does not, according to available information, require a separate English language certificate, though good English proficiency is a prerequisite for following the teaching.
Deadlines
The faculty offers several examination sittings throughout the year, usually in spring, early summer and late summer, each with its own application deadline a few weeks beforehand. Anyone wishing to start in autumn should therefore begin the application no later than the preceding winter. The exact dates are set by the faculty each year — verify them directly with the faculty before applying.
Tuition Fees and Living Costs
The tuition fee is set annually by faculty resolution. Published figures for the English-language General Medicine programme have recently ranged from approximately EUR 12,000 to EUR 13,000 per academic year; dentistry is higher. Plan for six years of fees, not a one-off amount. Living costs in Slovakia are commonly estimated at around EUR 400 to EUR 800 per month, with Bratislava as the capital sitting at the upper end of this range. The current fee schedule published by the faculty is always the binding figure.

Structure and Language of Instruction
General Medicine lasts six years or twelve semesters and ends with the Slovak degree MUDr., which is equivalent to the German medical qualification. The early years are pre-clinical in character; from mid-programme onwards the focus shifts to the city’s hospitals. The language of instruction in the English programme is English throughout. This does not apply to patient contact, however: history-taking and ward rounds take place in Slovak, which is why language courses are compulsory in the curriculum. Practical training periods and Famulaturen can, by arrangement, partly be completed in Germany.
Recognition in Germany
Slovakia is an EU member state. The medical qualification therefore falls under Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications, which provides for automatic recognition of the degree in all member states. Automatic recognition does not mean informal, however: you apply for the Approbation from the competent state authority, submit the degree along with translations, and demonstrate your German language proficiency — normally through the medical language examination of the medical association. Anyone who has studied in English should therefore not neglect German medical terminology. The process is well established but takes several months and needs to be planned before the end of the programme.

Life in Bratislava
With around half a million inhabitants, Bratislava is a compact capital city: short distances, a compact old town on the Danube, and a daily routine that settles in quickly. Accommodation is available in university dormitories or in private shared flats; rents are the highest in a Slovak comparison but are generally moderate compared with German university cities. Payment is in euros, which makes budgeting and comparison with home straightforward.
Community and Getting There
The long tradition of the English-language programme means you will join an internationally mixed cohort with a stable German-speaking contingent — study groups and past examination collections are usually organised across year groups. Getting there is one of the practical advantages of this location: Vienna Airport is about an hour away by bus and is reachable from almost every German airport, and there are also direct train and bus connections to Vienna and towards the Czech Republic.
Συχνές Ερωτήσεις
Do I need a specific NC for Bratislava?
No. Selection is based on the written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, not on the school-leaving grade. What counts is the score achieved there. Admission cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Is the programme really taught entirely in English?
Teaching in the English programme takes place in English, from lectures to examinations. Patient contact in the hospitals, however, takes place in Slovak. Slovak language courses are therefore a fixed part of the curriculum, and you should take them seriously.
Is the degree recognised in Germany?
Yes. Slovakia is an EU member state, and the medical qualification falls under the automatic recognition provisions of Directive 2005/36/EC. You still need to apply for the Approbation from the state authority and demonstrate German language proficiency, typically through the medical language examination.
What does the programme cost in total?
The tuition fee is set anew each year and has recently been published at around EUR 12,000 to EUR 13,000 per academic year. It falls due in each of the six years, with living costs, books and travel on top. The binding figure is always the current fee schedule published by the faculty.
Can I transfer to Germany later or do placements there?
Famulaturen and parts of the practical training can be completed in Germany by arrangement with the faculty. A full transfer to a German faculty, by contrast, is subject to available places in higher semesters and is therefore not reliably plannable. Anyone wanting to return to Germany is better served by completing the degree in Bratislava and then pursuing the Approbation.
