Avalon University School of Medicine (Willemstad)
Avalon University School of Medicine teaches in Willemstad in English and awards the M.D., with pre-clinical tuition at USD 10,395 per semester. Since Curaçao is not in the EU, the competent state authority assesses equivalency under § 3 BÄO; if successful, the knowledge test follows and then the medical licence.
Avalon University School of Medicine has its campus in Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, and is oriented towards international students. Teaching is conducted entirely in English; the curriculum follows the North American pattern with credit hours rather than ECTS. In addition to the MD programme, there is a pre-med section and a BS/MD option. Cohorts are small and the programme is clearly aligned with the North American job market.
What sets the faculty apart
The structure is clearly timed: five pre-clinical semesters of 15 weeks each on campus, followed by a six-week clinical introduction and six core rotations of twelve weeks each at partner hospitals. You therefore work with patients in long blocks rather than in short taster weeks. Three study starts per year – January, May, and September – give you flexibility in planning, for example after a voluntary service, a year abroad, or an interrupted training programme.
The accreditation position is broad for the region. The institution is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) and by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP). Both agencies hold the recognition status of the World Federation for Medical Education, listed until December 2026 for the ACCM and until May 2033 for CAAM-HP. In addition, the institution is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, operated jointly by WFME and FAIMER. Not every location in the region can point to two accreditations of this kind.
Where the limitations are
Costs are at the upper end of the Caribbean range. In the pre-clinical section, you pay USD 10,395 per semester across five semesters; in the clinical section, USD 5,145 for the introduction and USD 13,230 per core rotation. All fees are invoiced in USD, so your cost in euros depends on the exchange rate. Reliable living cost figures for Curaçao are not available, so we deliberately quote no monthly figure here. Much is imported to the island, so you should budget generously.
The degree is from outside the European Union. Accreditation by WFME-recognised agencies and listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools are primarily aimed at the route via USMLE and ECFMG certification to the United States; this does not result in automatic recognition in Germany. A transfer to a German faculty is also difficult because a North American curriculum rarely maps cleanly onto the German programme. Plan the degree as a complete pathway rather than an intermediate step.
Who this location is right for
Curaçao is a good fit if you are looking for an English-language MD programme with no entrance examination, have the North American route in mind, and can reliably finance the fees in USD. Those returning to Germany factor in the equivalency assessment and, if applicable, the knowledge test from the outset. Whether this route fits your profile is something we assess individually in a free consultation.

Admission
The MD programme requires a bachelor's degree or at least 90 credit hours with prior science courses. Those who do not have this prior qualification enter via the pre-med section. The basis remains a general university entrance qualification; there is no numerus clausus. You do not sit a standard entrance examination, and in the regular track the institution also does not require a MCAT; only the accelerated study route requires one. A good command of English is expected since teaching, examinations, and rotations are all conducted in English. We assess this individually in a free consultation.
Deadlines
There are three study starts per year: January, May, and September. Places per start date are limited, and flights and entry formalities require advance planning. Six months' lead time before the desired start is a useful rule of thumb. Applications and registration are generally handled entirely online; you do not need to fly to Curaçao for the process.
Tuition fees and living costs
Pre-clinical fees are USD 10,395 per semester, equivalent to approximately EUR 19,100 per year. The clinical section is invoiced differently: USD 5,145 for the six-week introduction and USD 13,230 per twelve-week core rotation, with six core rotations in total. Over the entire programme, this amounts to a six-figure USD sum, and that figure should be at the forefront of planning. Application fees, textbooks, flights to the Caribbean, and visa and residence permit fees are additional. Since everything is invoiced in USD, your budget should include a buffer for exchange rate fluctuations. No reliable living cost figures are available from the institution, so we quote no figure here. Overseas grants are conceivable even outside Europe but depend on the individual case and the responsible grants office; many families combine personal funds, education funds, and student loans.

Structure and language of instruction
The standard programme lasts four years, five with the pre-med section and six as the BS/MD option. The pre-clinical section comprises five semesters of 15 weeks each on the campus in Willemstad, followed by the clinical section. Teaching and examinations are conducted entirely in English. Credits are calculated in credit hours and semesters rather than ECTS. You receive a transcript of records listing all courses and grades; for a German procedure, this is assessed on its content rather than simply converted.
Clinical training and practice
The clinical section begins with a six-week introduction, followed by six core rotations of twelve weeks each at partner hospitals. A board preparation programme is integrated into the fifth pre-clinical semester. Whether individual sections are subsequently credited in Germany as elective placements or as part of the practical year is decided by the competent state licensing authority. Because rotations run in long blocks, you work in the same team for weeks rather than in short taster placements.
Recognition in Germany
Curaçao is not in the European Union; Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply. The competent state authority assesses your MD under § 3 BÄO for equivalency with the German medical programme; if equivalency is not established, you sit the knowledge test and are then granted the licence to practise. A limited professional licence is possible in the interim. Accreditation by ACCM and CAAM-HP and listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools primarily concern the route via USMLE and ECFMG and do not replace the German individual assessment. An individual assessment likewise applies in Austria and Switzerland; for Switzerland, the competent federal authority is the relevant contact. Collect syllabi and module descriptions from the outset.

Life in Willemstad
Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao, an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands off the Venezuelan coast. The historic waterfront trading houses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Papiamentu, Dutch, English, and Spanish are spoken; in everyday life, English gets you almost everywhere. The island lies outside the hurricane belt and is warm and dry year-round. A few phrases of Papiamentu open doors in daily life, though the language is not required for the programme.
Housing and everyday life
Most students rent an apartment or a room in a shared flat near the campus. Because Curaçao is a tourist destination, you compete with holiday guests for accommodation in high season, so searching early is worthwhile. Much is imported to the island; rent and food should be budgeted generously. Direct connections exist to Amsterdam; Miami is around two and a half hours away; from Germany you generally travel via the Netherlands. The student cohort is small, so you quickly find your feet. Spontaneous weekend trips home are not possible, and flights are expensive in high season. Those who know this in advance plan holidays and budgets more realistically.
Συχνές Ερωτήσεις
Is the MD from Curaçao recognised in Germany?
Not automatically. Curaçao is not in the European Union; Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply. The competent state authority assesses the equivalency of your training under § 3 BÄO; if equivalency is not established, you sit the knowledge test and are then granted the licence to practise. A limited professional licence is possible in the interim. You should take this difference from EU locations seriously in your decision.
What is the accreditation situation?
The institution is accredited by ACCM and CAAM-HP. Both agencies hold the recognition status of the World Federation for Medical Education, listed until December 2026 and May 2033 respectively. The institution is additionally listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. This is the formal basis for the route via USMLE and ECFMG certification. It does not replace the individual assessment for Germany.
Do I need the MCAT?
Not in the standard track. Avalon University School of Medicine only requires the MCAT for the accelerated study route. There is no standard entrance examination either. A bachelor's degree or at least 90 credit hours with prior science courses and a good command of English are required. You do not sit a standard entrance examination; your application is what counts.
How much does the programme cost?
Pre-clinical: USD 10,395 per semester across five semesters; clinical: USD 5,145 for the introduction and USD 13,230 per core rotation across six rotations. Over the entire programme, this amounts to a six-figure USD sum. Since fees are invoiced in USD, your cost in euros fluctuates with the exchange rate. Application fees, textbooks, flights, and visa costs are additional.
How much does life in Willemstad cost?
Reliable figures are not available, so we deliberately quote no monthly sum. Willemstad is a tourist destination and much is imported to the island. Rent, food, and transport should be budgeted generously. We go through your personal budget in detail in the free consultation. Budget a buffer rather than fixing yourself to a tight figure.
