The Frankfurt campus of European University Cyprus is not a German institution. It is the German branch campus of a private Cypriot university headquartered in Nicosia. You study in Frankfurt am Main, you are enrolled at the Cypriot university, and your degree is also awarded by Cyprus. You do not sit a German Staatsexamen on this path. This is the most important point to understand before looking at fees and application deadlines.

University, Campus, and Responsibilities

European University Cyprus has been in operation since 1961 and, alongside its main campus in Nicosia, operates further locations in Athens and in Frankfurt am Main. The Frankfurt campus is on Im Vogelsgesang in the north-west of the city. Academic quality assurance and accreditation are the responsibility of the Cypriot agency CYQAA, not a German body or a German ministry of science. This is not a deficiency, but it is the structural difference from a German faculty: for everything academic, Cypriot higher education law applies, even though the lecture hall is in Hesse.

The Medical Program

The Medicine program leads in six years and 360 ECTS credits to the Doctor of Medicine — M.D. Years one to three form the preclinical phase, years four to six the clinical phase, each supplemented by elective subjects. The language of instruction throughout is English. The university gives the next program start as October 2026.

Teaching takes place at the Frankfurt campus. It is therefore not a model in which you spend a fixed number of semesters in Germany and a fixed number in Cyprus. What is flexible instead is the clinical component: placements are completed through a network of partner institutions which, according to the university, includes hospitals in Germany (including Frankfurt) as well as in Cyprus, Greece, the USA, and other countries. Summer placements at several international locations are also part of the program. Where you end up depends on availability and choice, not a rigid semester plan.

What the Degree Means

At the end you hold an M.D. from European University Cyprus — a professional qualification from an EU member state. The path to German Approbation therefore does not run through the Staatsexamen but through recognition of this EU degree under Directive 2005/36/EC and a subsequent Approbation procedure at the relevant state authority.

Two things are worth seeing clearly. First, the program is in English but your future working life in Germany will not be. German language skills are required for Approbation in any case, and the earlier you work on them, the less of a bottleneck they become. Second, private study means six years of tuition fees without public core funding behind you.

Selection Without Numerus Clausus, but With a Grade Threshold

There is no Numerus clausus in the German sense, but there is a minimum grade requirement. For German applicants the university requires an Abitur of 2.3 or better, along with biology and one of chemistry, mathematics, or physics as successfully completed subjects. International applicants need an average of 90 percent or better with the same subject requirements. Since teaching is in English, proof of English at B2 level is compulsory — for example IELTS from 6.5 or TOEFL from 79. Applicants from English-language school systems are exempt.

The process: online application, document review, followed by a selection interview for qualifying applicants. The interview covers motivation, academic background, and personal interests; voluntary work in the healthcare sector is taken into account. An application fee of €200 applies.

Costs

The university publishes tuition fees in a separate, annually updated schedule for the Frankfurt campus. Because these rates change and vary by program, no second-hand figure is given here. Ask the campus directly for the current fee schedule for the Medicine program, in writing and specifying the academic year, and also ask about enrollment fees, examination fees, and the costs of international placements.

Calculate living costs separately. Frankfurt is one of Germany's most expensive cities; rent is the largest item. Six years of private study is a sum to be worked out in advance, not along the way. Medschool Experts advises on studying medicine without a Numerus clausus in Germany and abroad and compares cost models like this against other paths.

Structure and Locations

Six years, 360 ECTS credits, years one to three preclinical, years four to six clinical. Teaching runs at the campus in Frankfurt. The model does not prescribe a compulsory study phase in Cyprus. What is flexible is the clinical component, organized through a network of partner hospitals — according to the university in Germany, Cyprus, Greece, the USA, and other countries. Find out early which locations are realistically available for your cohort, and do not rely solely on verbal assurances.

Language of Instruction and Clinical Phase

Teaching and examinations are in English. For clinical placements in German hospitals, and even more so for subsequent professional practice, you need German. This is precisely where this model becomes demanding: you learn medicine in English and must simultaneously command it in German, including all the technical terminology at the bedside.

Degree and Recognition in Germany

The Doctor of Medicine is awarded by European University Cyprus. It is a Cypriot and therefore an EU degree — not a German Staatsexamen and not a German university qualification. For professional licensing in Germany, EU Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications therefore applies. You apply for Approbation at the relevant state authority, submit your degree for recognition, and demonstrate your German language skills — typically general language proficiency at B2 level plus a specialist language examination. Ask the Approbation authority of the federal state in which you intend to work in good time and in writing, as procedures and processing times differ considerably between states.

Once Approbation is granted, you practice medicine in Germany without restriction. For specialist training, the same rules then apply as for everyone else: you apply for junior doctor posts and complete the specialist training program of your regional medical chamber (Landesärztekammer). The additional step lies solely in the licensing procedure beforehand, not in the training that follows.

Frankfurt am Main

The campus is on Im Vogelsgesang in the north-west of Frankfurt and is accessible by public transport. The university does not operate its own student dormitory; instead it points to private student apartments from various providers in the city. Such buildings are comfortable and straightforward to arrange but rarely cheap. Those who want to save money look for a classic flat share or an apartment in the surrounding area and commute by S-Bahn or regional train. Frankfurt is compact, well connected, and international — a fitting environment for an English-language program, and at the same time the expensive part of the budget.

Cyprus and International Placements

A compulsory stay in Cyprus is not part of the model. The main campus in Nicosia nevertheless remains the academic reference point of your university; administration, accreditation, and degree conferral are based there. More relevant to your daily life are the clinical placements, which may take you to Cyprus, Greece, the USA, or German partner hospitals. Travel, accommodation, and insurance for such periods are generally your own responsibility. Budget for them as a separate cost item.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Is the M.D. from European University Cyprus recognized in Germany?

It is a degree from an EU member state and is therefore recognized under EU Directive 2005/36/EC. It is explicitly not a German Staatsexamen. After graduating, you apply for Approbation at the relevant state authority, which recognizes the degree and checks your German language skills.

What does the medical program at Campus Frankfurt cost?

The university publishes fees in a separate schedule, updated annually. No figure is given here because rates change. Ask the campus in writing for the current schedule for the Medicine program and add the enrollment fee, examination fees, and the cost of living in Frankfurt. Over six years the total is a sum that should be secured in advance.

Do I need German if the program is taught in English?

Not for the program itself, but absolutely for practicing medicine in Germany. Approbation requires proof of language proficiency — typically B2 general language plus a specialist language examination. Clinical placements in German hospitals also cannot function without German.

Is there a Numerus clausus?

Not a Numerus clausus in the German sense, but there is a grade threshold: for German applicants the university requires an Abitur of 2.3 or better with biology and chemistry, mathematics, or physics. There is also a B2 English language requirement and a selection interview.

Do I have to complete part of the program in Cyprus?

No, a compulsory phase in Nicosia is not required. Teaching takes place at the Frankfurt campus. Clinical placements may, however, take you to Cyprus or other international partner locations.
