Yeditepe University, Faculty of Medicine (Istanbul)

Yeditepe University teaches human medicine in Istanbul in English over six years at 20,000 EUR per semester. Because Turkey is not an EU member, the competent state authority assesses equivalency under § 3 BÄO; if equivalency is not established, a knowledge test is required, after which full licensure is granted.

Yeditepe University was founded in 1996; its medical faculty began operations in 2000. It is a private foundation university on the Asian side of Istanbul, teaching human medicine and dentistry entirely in English. Cohort sizes are deliberately kept small, and the clinical phase takes place within the university's own hospital network. This makes it one of the few private institutions that organizes teaching and patient care under one roof.

What defines the faculty

The university operates its own hospitals: two facilities with 180 and 190 beds respectively, totaling around 370 beds, along with a dental clinic and several specialized centers, such as for ophthalmology and genetic diagnostics. For a medical degree, this is a tangible advantage, as a faculty without its own hospital must distribute students across external institutions. Because group sizes remain small, you reach the bedside earlier than at a very large institution. The trade-off is a narrower case mix compared to a maximum-care provider with several thousand beds.

The faculty is accredited by TEPDAD, the Turkish agency for the evaluation and accreditation of medical education programs. TEPDAD has held Recognition Status from the World Federation for Medical Education since 2013. For those pursuing medicine in the United States, this is the formal prerequisite, as the ECFMG has required accreditation by a WFME-recognized agency since 1 January 2023. The faculty's current accreditation runs through early 2027. For recognition in Germany, this makes no difference — there, only the assessment by the competent state authority applies.

Where the limitations lie

The clearest point is cost. 20,000 EUR per semester totals approximately 240,000 EUR over twelve semesters, with living costs of at least around 1,000 EUR per month on top. Study-abroad BAföG is available outside the EU in principle, but is decided case by case and does not cover amounts of this magnitude. Anyone seriously considering this location should clarify financing before applying, not after.

The second point is the degree. Turkey is not a member of the European Union, so automatic recognition in Germany does not apply. Daily life is also relevant: teaching is in English, but patients in the university's hospital network predominantly speak Turkish. Without basic language skills you will depend on others for patient consultations. Transferring to a German faculty mid-program from a non-EU country is also rarely straightforward.

Who this location suits

Istanbul is a good fit if you are looking for an English-language program without an entrance test, value having a dedicated university hospital, and have secured viable financing. Those with an eye on the United States will find a solid foundation via the WFME-recognized accreditation; those wanting to return to Germany should plan the equivalency assessment from the outset. Whether this location suits your situation is assessed individually in a free consultation.

Admission

The requirement is a university entrance qualification — in Germany, the Abitur. There is no numerus clausus. Yeditepe University does not conduct a centralized entrance test; it decides based on your application. Proof of English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or CAE is required, as all instruction is in English. Because no written exam is decisive, a complete and well-prepared application matters all the more. Anyone who struggles with standardized science entrance tests will find a different route into medical studies here. We assess this individually in a free consultation.

Deadlines

The program starts in the winter semester; there is no mid-year entry. Apply in the preceding year, as the language test and visa formalities require lead time and places are limited. The university sets exact dates annually. Allow several additional weeks for the student visa and residence permit process. Miss the start and everything shifts by twelve months.

Tuition and living costs

Tuition for human medicine is 20,000 EUR per semester, for dentistry 32,000 EUR. Over the six-year standard program, tuition for human medicine amounts to approximately 240,000 EUR. Additional costs include the application, language test, residence permit, health insurance, travel, textbooks, and clinical clothing. Budget at least around 1,000 EUR per month for living costs. One-bedroom apartments range from 600 to 900 EUR depending on the district. Istanbul is not an inexpensive student city, and the total sum belongs at the beginning of your planning, not the end. Over six years, living costs are a substantial additional amount on top of tuition, even if food and public transport are cheaper than in Germany. Add both together before you decide.

Structure and language of instruction

The program lasts six years and is entirely English-medium. Years one and two are pre-clinical; the clinical phase begins in year three. The sixth year is practice-oriented and corresponds to the German Praktisches Jahr. You do not need Turkish for admission, though it helps considerably on the ward. The university issues a Transcript of Records with subjects, exams, and credit points — you will need this for every recognition procedure.

Clinical and practical training

The clinical phase takes place in the university's own hospital network with around 370 beds, a dental clinic, and several specialized centers. Practical placements at German clinics are generally possible in principle; recognition is decided by the relevant authority according to its own rules. The sixth year is entirely practical and covers the typical specialist areas. Dentistry is also taught at the same university in English over six years.

Recognition in Germany

Turkey is not an EU member state, so Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply. The competent state authority assesses your training for equivalency with the German medical program under § 3 BÄO. If the assessment is positive, licensure follows; if not, you take the knowledge test and receive full licensure thereafter. A temporary limited license is possible in the interim. Keep your curriculum, transcript, and supporting documents complete from the start, as these are exactly what the authority will review. In Austria and Switzerland, individual case assessment also applies. Once licensure is granted, you stand on equal footing with all other physicians in specialist training; the intermediate step primarily costs time.

Life in Istanbul

Istanbul has around 15 million inhabitants and spans two continents across the Bosphorus. The Yeditepe University campus is located on the Asian side. The metro, tram, and ferry network is well developed and affordable, yet distances remain long given the city's size: half an hour of travel is normal, and an hour is not unusual. Those who need quiet should factor this in before deciding; those who enjoy urban life will find it here in abundance. Public transport fares are inexpensive compared to Germany.

Housing and everyday life

Most students live in the dormitory or in a privately rented apartment near the campus. One-bedroom apartments cost 600 to 900 EUR depending on the district; living further out saves on rent but costs travel time. Start your search early — the market fills quickly at the start of the semester. English is your working language in studies; Turkish helps in daily life and at the bedside. For entry you need a valid passport, a student visa, and a residence permit after arrival. These are bureaucratic steps that take time and must be completed on schedule. Local health insurance coverage is also required.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Is the Istanbul degree recognized in Germany?

Not automatically. Turkey is not a member of the European Union, so Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply. The competent state authority assesses equivalency under § 3 BÄO. If the assessment is positive, licensure follows; if not, you take the knowledge test and receive full licensure thereafter. A temporary limited license is possible in the interim.

Is there an entrance exam?

No centralized entrance test. Yeditepe University decides based on your application and requires a university entrance qualification and proof of English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or CAE. There is no numerus clausus in the German sense. A complete and well-prepared application is therefore decisive. The university sets deadlines annually.

What does TEPDAD accreditation mean?

TEPDAD is the Turkish agency for the evaluation and accreditation of medical education programs and has held Recognition Status from the World Federation for Medical Education since 2013. Since 1 January 2023, the ECFMG has required exactly this type of accreditation. This fulfills the formal prerequisite for ECFMG and USMLE. For recognition in Germany, however, this accreditation makes no difference.

Do I need Turkish?

Not for admission, but practically yes for clinical work. Teaching and examinations are in English, but patients in the university's hospital network predominantly speak Turkish. Without basic language skills you will depend on others for patient consultations. Anyone who takes this seriously starts early. Building basic proficiency takes time but pays off immediately at the bedside.

What is the total cost of studying?

Human medicine costs 20,000 EUR per semester — 240,000 EUR over twelve semesters in tuition alone. Add living costs of at least around 1,000 EUR per month, plus the language test, residence permit, insurance, and travel. Clarify financing before you apply.
