About the Faculty

LMU Munich was founded in 1472 and is one of the research-leading sites of academic medicine in Europe. With 876 places per cohort year in human medicine and approximately 5,900 enrolled students across human and dental medicine, the faculty is the largest in Germany. Teaching follows the Medizinisches Curriculum München (MeCuM). A Munich-specific feature: the preclinical phase is organised jointly by LMU and TUM; students are enrolled at both universities during this time. After the First Section of the Medical Examination, they are distributed in a 60/40 ratio between LMU and TUM — if there is a surplus on one side, examination results decide; otherwise the matter is settled by lot.

The LMU Klinikum provides approximately 2,058 beds across two campuses — Großhadern in the south-west and Innenstadt in the city centre — and covers the full spectrum of maximum-level care. The faculty participates in all eight German Centres for Health Research (Deutsche Zentren der Gesundheitsforschung); LMU is funded under the Excellence Strategy as an Excellence University. This location suits students who want a very broad range of specialties and research opportunities and can organise themselves well within a large cohort. Students looking for small cohorts and fixed personal supervision will find better conditions at smaller faculties.

Admission

Places are allocated nationally via hochschulstart, distributed across the Abitur best quota (30%), the additional aptitude quota (ZEQ, 10%), and the university’s own selection procedure (AdH, 60%).

In the AdH, LMU awards up to 100 points: up to 51 points for the Abitur grade (HZB), up to 24 points for the TMS result, up to 10 points for a relevant completed vocational training, up to 8 points for recognised service (e.g. voluntary social year, military service), and up to 7 points for awards such as prizes in Jugend forscht or comparable competitions. In the ZEQ, the Abitur grade plays no role: TMS counts for up to 60 points and vocational training for up to 40 points. A strong TMS result benefits applicants in both quotas, regardless of Abitur grade.

Because the preclinical phase is jointly organised with TUM, applicants apply for Munich as a study location; the definitive assignment to LMU or TUM takes place at the transition to the clinical phase. No tuition fees are charged. The semester contribution is payable; living costs in Munich are significantly above the national average, particularly for accommodation.

Physikum, M2, M3: drei Versuche, bundesweit einheitlich

MeCuM: The Medizinisches Curriculum München

Human medicine at LMU is taught according to MeCuM. The first study phase covers the preclinical subjects from Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology to Medical Psychology and Sociology, ending with the First Section of the Medical Examination. A Munich-specific feature: the preclinical phase is jointly organised, with teaching taking place predominantly at the LMU, so from the outset you share lecture halls with TUM students.

Clinical Phase and Longitudinal Strands

The second study phase is divided into six modules structured around symptoms and organ systems; after the first module, students have limited flexibility in sequencing the remainder. Three longitudinal curricula run through the entire programme: MeCuM Skills (progressive examination training), KomMeCuM (communication with trained simulation patients), and MeCuM Science (scientific methods and evidence-based medicine). Patient contact is scheduled from the third semester; assessments are regular and standardised rather than concentrated at semester end.

Practical Year, Staatsexamen, Approbation

The Second Section of the Medical Examination precedes the Practical Year. The PJ starts in May or November and consists of three blocks: Innere Medizin, Chirurgie, and a Wahlfach. Training sites include the LMU Klinikum (Campus Großhadern and Campus Innenstadt) and a very large network of affiliated teaching hospitals and GP practices across Bavaria. After the Third Section, graduates apply for Approbation at the responsible state examination office.

Vorteile

Between the City Centre and Großhadern

Daily life is spread across several sites. The clinics and institutes around Ziemssen-, Pettenkofer-, and Nußbaumstraße lie centrally between Goetheplatz and Sendlinger Tor; Campus Großhadern in the south-west is at the end of U6; preclinical facilities are also at Campus Martinsried. Distances between lectures, courses, and block placements add up quickly — a transit pass is standard equipment.

Munich has Germany’s most expensive housing market. Flat-share rooms are scarce and expensive, Studierendenwerk halls are heavily oversubscribed, and many students commute from further out along S-Bahn lines. Budget for accommodation realistically, not from national average figures. In return: a very lively city with an active student union, many clinical-sector jobs, the Isar and English Garden on your doorstep, and the Alps reachable by train in about an hour.

What is MeCuM?

MeCuM stands for Medizinisches Curriculum München — the LMU faculty’s study concept. It combines modular, symptom-oriented teaching in the clinical phase with three longitudinal curricula covering practical skills, communication, and scientific work. Practical exercises and patient contact are scheduled from early in the programme.

Is it true that LMU and TUM share the preclinical phase?

Yes. The preclinical phase is jointly organised in Munich and takes place predominantly at the LMU, regardless of which university a student is enrolled at. After the First Section of the Medical Examination, the paths diverge: the clinical phase is at each student’s own faculty.

Where can I do my Practical Year?

The PJ starts in May or November and consists of three blocks: Innere Medizin, Chirurgie, and a Wahlfach. Training sites are the LMU Klinikum (Campus Großhadern and Campus Innenstadt) and numerous affiliated teaching hospitals and GP practices across Bavaria. Place allocation is via the national PJ portal.

How do I apply?

Admission is via hochschulstart, with Abitur best quota, additional aptitude quota, and the university’s own selection procedure; subject-specific aptitude tests feed into the university’s own quotas. Cut-off values are only known after each allocation round and change from cycle to cycle. Medschool Experts advises on NC-free routes into medical studies and does not handle applications to German state faculties.

What does studying in Munich cost?

No tuition fees are charged by LMU; the semester contribution is payable. The main expense is living in the city, above all rent. If you cannot draw on financial support, calculate BAföG eligibility, scholarships, and a part-time job from the start, because the programme itself leaves little spare time.
