University of Nicosia, Medical School
The University of Nicosia Medical School trains students in Cyprus to MD level in six years in English, at 24,000 EUR per year and without a numerus clausus. Because Cyprus belongs to the European Union, the degree is automatically recognized in Germany under Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V — no equivalency or knowledge test required.
The University of Nicosia Medical School is the medical faculty of Cyprus's largest private university. It offers human medicine in two formats: a six-year MD program for applicants with a secondary school leaving qualification, and a five-year Graduate Entry for those who already hold a university degree. The language of instruction is entirely English. Tuition is 24,000 EUR per year, or 25,000 EUR in the Graduate Entry. Cyprus is an EU member state and the degree is automatically recognized in Germany.
What defines the faculty
Selection is based on an interview rather than a decimal point in your grade average. There is no numerus clausus; the decision is made on the basis of your application and an online interview focused on motivation, background, and your idea of the medical profession. Requirements are a university entrance qualification and English at B2 level; for the Graduate Entry, a completed university degree of any discipline is additionally required.
The second point is accreditation. The responsible national agency is the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, which holds Recognition Status from the World Federation for Medical Education for basic medical education. This is more than a formality: since 1 January 2023 the ECFMG has required exactly this type of accreditation. The pre-clinical and early clinical years take place in Nicosia; the final years of study are spent at partner hospitals.
Where the limitations lie
Cost is the clearest constraint. 24,000 EUR per year amounts to 144,000 EUR over six years in tuition alone; the five-year Graduate Entry totals 125,000 EUR. On top come an application fee, an administrative fee, and professional liability insurance that increases in cost during the clinical years. Study-abroad BAföG is in principle available for Cyprus, but covers tuition only partially, regularly leaving a large gap.
The distributed structure has a practical consequence: you will relocate at least once during your studies, and the cost of living at the clinical site may differ from that in Nicosia. For clinical placements in the United Kingdom or the United States the fee schedule lists a surcharge; for placements in Germany or Switzerland a smaller one. Those who want a fixed clinical location for the entire duration of study should weigh this consciously. And Cyprus is only accessible by air — spontaneous weekends at home are expensive.
Who this location suits
This location suits you if you want an English-language program in an EU state whose degree is recognized without detours, and if your budget supports the tuition. It is a particularly good fit if you already hold a university degree, because the five-year Graduate Entry saves you a full year of study and its associated costs. It is less suitable if you are planning on a tight budget or prefer a fixed clinical location throughout your studies. Whether this path fits your educational background, timeline, and finances is assessed individually in a free consultation.

Admission
The University of Nicosia Medical School does not select based on your school leaving grade; there is no numerus clausus. Requirements are a university entrance qualification and English at B2 level; for the Graduate Entry, a completed university degree of any discipline is additionally required. Selection is made on the basis of your application and an online interview focused on your motivation, background, and idea of the medical profession. This is not a technical examination in the traditional sense; the expected academic foundation is upper secondary biology and chemistry. We assess this individually in a free consultation.
Deadlines
The cohort starts in the winter semester; summer entry is not available — this applies to both the six-year MD program and the Graduate Entry. Because places are limited and interview slots fill early, starting the process the preceding year is worthwhile. The process is generally entirely online; you do not need to travel to Cyprus. We prepare you for the biology and chemistry foundations and for the interview.
Tuition and living costs
Tuition is 24,000 EUR per year, or 25,000 EUR in the Graduate Entry. Over six years that is 144,000 EUR; over the five-year route, 125,000 EUR. Additional costs include a one-time application fee, an administrative fee, and professional liability insurance that is higher during the clinical years; the fee schedule lists separate surcharges for clinical placements abroad. Budget around 500 to 700 EUR per month for living costs; campus-adjacent accommodation costs approximately 470 to 560 EUR. As Cyprus is an EU member, study-abroad BAföG is in principle available, but only partially covers the tuition.

Structure and language of instruction
The MD program lasts six years. Years one and two are pre-clinical; the clinical phase begins in year three. Alternatively, the five-year Graduate Entry leads to the same degree and requires a prior university qualification. The language of instruction is entirely English; proof at B2 level is required. Because Cyprus belongs to the European Higher Education Area, your credits are expressed in ECTS and summarized in a Transcript of Records.
Clinical and practical training
The pre-clinical and early clinical years are spent in Nicosia; the final years of study are completed at partner hospitals. The final year is practice-oriented and corresponds to the German Praktisches Jahr. Professionally, the distributed structure is a benefit: by graduation you will have experienced the workings of multiple institutions rather than remaining in the same departmental structure for six years. Clinical placements in Germany are generally possible; recognition is decided by the authority processing your Approbation application.
Recognition in Germany
Cyprus is a member state of the European Union. The MD is therefore covered by Directive 2005/36/EC with Annex V, point 5.1.1 for the medical profession, as amended by Delegated Decision (EU) 2023/2383. Recognition is automatic; no equivalency or knowledge test applies, and this is the case for both the six-year MD program and the five-year Graduate Entry. You apply for licensure at the authority in the federal state where you intend to work; proof of German language proficiency is required. No substantive review of your studies takes place.

Life in Nicosia
Nicosia is the capital and seat of government of Cyprus, lies inland, and remains divided to this day. The sea is therefore a destination you travel to deliberately — it is not at your doorstep. What you do have is a compact daily life: short distances, a high proportion of international students, and English as a widely spoken language in both academic and everyday settings. You do not need Greek for lectures or examinations, but basic knowledge is useful for administrative tasks and for communicating with older patients.
Housing and everyday life
Campus-adjacent accommodation costs around 470 to 560 EUR per month and will be your largest single expense; other students share an apartment in the city and spend less. Overall living costs are around 500 to 700 EUR per month. Because the rental market is concentrated in a few neighborhoods and demand is high at the start of term, start your search early. Cyprus is only accessible by air — budget for flights as a fixed expense. We support you with accommodation search, enrollment, and administrative tasks on location.
Συχνές Ερωτήσεις
Is the Nicosia degree recognized in Germany?
Yes. Cyprus is a member of the European Union, so the MD from the University of Nicosia Medical School is automatically recognized under Directive 2005/36/EC with Annex V, point 5.1.1. No equivalency or knowledge test is required — and this applies to both the six-year MD program and the five-year Graduate Entry.
What is the difference between the Graduate Entry and the standard MD program?
The standard MD program lasts six years and requires a secondary school leaving qualification. The Graduate Entry lasts five years and is aimed at applicants who already hold a university degree, regardless of discipline. The degree is the same in both cases; tuition differs slightly: 25,000 rather than 24,000 EUR per year.
How does the online interview work?
After applying, you are invited to a video interview. It covers your motivation, background, and view of the medical profession; it is not a technical examination in the traditional sense. The expected academic foundation is upper secondary biology and chemistry. The interview is conducted online — no travel required.
What is the total cost of studying in Nicosia?
Tuition is 24,000 EUR per year, or 25,000 EUR in the Graduate Entry. Over six years that is 144,000 EUR; over five years, 125,000 EUR. Add application and administrative fees, professional liability insurance, and around 500 to 700 EUR per month for living costs, with campus-adjacent accommodation at around 470 to 560 EUR.
Where does clinical training take place?
The pre-clinical and early clinical years are in Nicosia; the final years of study are at partner hospitals. This means at least one relocation during your studies and potentially different living costs at the clinical site. Professionally, the distributed structure has the advantage that you get to know the workings of multiple institutions before graduating.
