University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine

The University of Niš offers a six-year English-language medicine programme with 360 ECTS for €6,000 tuition per year. Because Serbia is not an EU member state, the degree is not automatically recognised in Germany but is assessed for equivalence under § 3 BÄO; if the assessment is negative, a knowledge examination follows, after which Approbation is granted.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Niš is one of Serbia's four state medical faculties and offers human medicine and dentistry in English as well. The medicine programme lasts six years, covers 360 ECTS, and leads to the degree of Doctor of Medicine. The tuition fee is €6,000 per year, with 120 places per cohort. Admission is by written entrance examination in biology and chemistry, conducted in English. Serbia is not an EU member state, which shapes the path to German Approbation.

What makes the faculty stand out

The faculty was founded in 1960 and is part of the University of Niš, which has a total enrolment of approximately 20,000 students. The English-language medicine programme is separately accredited; alongside it there is an English-language dentistry programme with twelve places per cohort and a three-year bachelor's degree programme in nursing. The fact that both medical disciplines are offered in English is rare outside the EU and makes the location attractive to applicants who have not yet decided between the two fields.

The practical part of the training takes place predominantly at the University Clinical Centre of Niš, the largest hospital in southern Serbia. The Clinical Centre opened in December 2017, so clinical teaching takes place in a comparatively new facility. The curriculum has a notably practice-heavy structure: 2,235 hours of theory are matched by 2,505 hours of practical work, plus 790 hours of summer placements and clinical practical teaching. A broad range of electives covering more than thirty courses, from neonatology to tropical infectious diseases, supplements the compulsory programme.

Where the limits lie

The most important point is recognition. Serbia is not an EU member state, so the degree is not automatically recognised in Germany but undergoes an equivalence assessment under § 3 BÄO. If the assessment is negative, a knowledge examination follows, after which Approbation is granted. The process is established and plannable, but it takes additional time that should be factored in from the start.

Teaching is in English, as is the entrance examination. Solid upper-secondary school English is therefore a prerequisite, not a bonus. On the wards, however, patients speak Serbian; without a basic knowledge of the language you cannot take a patient history and remain an observer in the practical sections. Language acquisition therefore comes on top of the academic study. The entrance examination in biology and chemistry is also a genuine filter; anyone who dropped either subject will need to systematically revise the basics.

Who this location suits

Niš suits you if you are looking for an English-language programme at moderate fees, are consciously prepared to go through the equivalence assessment process, and are willing to sit a science-based entrance examination. Those who want the shortest path to Approbation are better served by an EU location. Those who value low overall costs and a practice-heavy structure, however, will find an established programme in Niš. Whether Niš fits your situation is something Medschool Experts assesses individually in a free consultation.

Entrance examination instead of school-leaving grade

There is no Numerus clausus; your school-leaving grade therefore does not determine your place. In addition to a general university entrance qualification, admission in Niš is also possible with a Fachhochschulreife or a completed qualification in healthcare, for example in nursing. Admission is not automatic under any of these routes, as each is assessed individually. Whether your route is valid is something we assess individually in a free consultation. Selection is by separate written tests in biology and chemistry, both in English, covering upper-secondary school content.

Deadlines

The cohort starts in the winter semester; there is no summer-semester entry point. The entrance examination falls before the start of the semester, so applying in the preceding year is advisable. The examination can also be sat by video from outside Serbia if necessary; travel to Serbia is therefore not strictly required for the process. Registration, application, and examination organisation are handled by Medschool Experts as a contractual partner of the faculty. Because 120 places are allocated per cohort, the timing of the application is less critical than at very small locations, but it should not be left late either. What needs to happen in your case and when is something we clarify in advance.

Tuition fees and living costs

Human medicine costs €6,000 per academic year; dentistry costs €7,000. Both fees can optionally be paid quarterly, spreading the burden across the year. Over six years the total fee for human medicine amounts to €36,000. For living costs in Niš, budget €400–600 per month, covering rent, food, public transport, and insurance. This places the budget well below that of German university cities. Because Serbia is not an EU member state, funding of the full programme under BAföG is generally not available.

Structure and language of instruction

The programme covers 360 ECTS over twelve semesters. The first two years form the pre-clinical section with anatomy, histology, embryology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology. From the third year, pathology, pharmacology, and the clinical subjects follow — from internal medicine through surgery, paediatrics, and gynaecology to neurology and psychiatry. The sixth year is predominantly practical and concludes with a dissertation; subjects such as ophthalmology, ENT, emergency medicine, and general practice also fall in this section. The language of instruction is English throughout, and the programme is separately accredited for this purpose.

Clinical training and practical work

Clinical teaching takes place predominantly at the University Clinical Centre of Niš, the largest hospital in southern Serbia; the Clinical Centre opened in December 2017. Of the 4,740 active teaching hours, 2,505 are practical, with a further 790 hours of summer placement and clinical practical teaching. Knowledge of Serbian is not required for admission, but it is indispensable for working with patients. Clinical electives can in principle be completed in Germany; the relevant authority decides on credit recognition.

Recognition in Germany

Serbia is not an EU member state, so automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC does not apply. Instead, the competent state authority assesses your training individually for equivalence under § 3 BÄO. If that assessment is negative, you sit a knowledge examination and then receive Approbation. In the interim, a time-limited licence to practise is possible, allowing you to work under supervision as a doctor. The process is established for accredited state faculties but requires one additional step compared with an EU degree.

Life in Niš

Niš is Serbia's third-largest city with approximately 260,000 inhabitants, situated in the south-east of the country on the Nišava river. The city traces its origins to the ancient Roman settlement of Naissus; the Ottoman fortress at its centre is the best-known meeting point. With several faculties and approximately 20,000 students, university life is central to the city. The city is manageable in scale, distances are short, the restaurant and music scene is lively, and the cost of living is at the lower end of what is possible in Europe.

Housing and daily life

Students generally rent privately or share a flat; prices are clearly below German levels. Supply around the faculties is correspondingly good, though it tightens at the start of semester in autumn. At €400–600 per month, rent, food, public transport, and insurance are all covered. Niš has its own international airport with connections to central and western Europe, and Belgrade is additionally well reachable. The international cohort and the German-speaking student community that has grown over the years make it easier to find your feet in the first year, because more senior students have already been through the same examinations.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Is the degree from Niš recognised in Germany?

Not automatically. Serbia is not an EU member state, so the competent state authority assesses your training individually for equivalence under § 3 BÄO. If the assessment is negative, you sit a knowledge examination and then receive Approbation. For accredited state faculties this process is established and plannable, but it requires additional time.

Can I study with a Fachhochschulreife or a healthcare qualification?

This is possible. In addition to a general university entrance qualification, the faculty also accepts a Fachhochschulreife and a completed qualification in healthcare as routes of entry. There is no Numerus clausus. Admission is not automatic under any route, as each is assessed individually. Whether your route is valid is something we assess individually in a free consultation.

How does the entrance examination work?

There are separate written tests in biology and chemistry, both in English. The content covers upper-secondary school knowledge, not university-level material. The examination can be sat by video from outside Serbia if necessary. Anyone who dropped either subject should systematically revise the basics, as the examination is a genuine filter.

What does the programme in Niš cost?

Human medicine costs €6,000 per academic year; dentistry costs €7,000. Both fees can optionally be paid quarterly. Over six years, human medicine totals €36,000. Add to this €400–600 per month for rent, food, public transport, and insurance. BAföG funding of the full programme is generally not available for Serbia.

Do I have to learn Serbian?

Not for the coursework, as teaching runs entirely in English. At the University Clinical Centre of Niš, however, patients speak Serbian, and without basic knowledge you cannot take a patient history. Anyone who takes the clinical section seriously will acquire the language on the side. This effort comes on top of the academic study and needs to be planned for.
