The University of Health Sciences Antigua, known as UHSA, is located in Piccadilly in the southeast of Antigua, above the historic harbour complex of English Harbour and around 19 kilometres from the capital St. John’s. The campus occupies a large site at Dow’s Hill that was previously used as a NASA tracking station. The university was founded in 1982 and began teaching in 1983, making it one of the older private medical schools in the Caribbean. An MD programme and a nursing programme are offered, taught in English.

Structure of the MD Programme

The medical programme is a four-year MD. The Basic Sciences are completed on campus in Antigua, followed by the clinical phase at affiliated hospitals. The university lists the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre on Antigua itself, as well as hospitals in the USA, Canada, the UK and Puerto Rico. For applicants without a science background, a pre-med preparatory course is available.

Accreditation Status: The Decisive Point

UHSA is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by the authorities of Antigua and Barbuda. What matters most, however, is something else: the regional agency CAAM-HP, the WFME-recognised accreditation body for the English-speaking Caribbean, lists the University of Health Sciences in its public overview with the status Accreditation Denied, meaning accreditation was refused; the associated document is dated 2024. An ACCM accreditation is also not documented. A refused accreditation is not a formality or an open procedural status — it is a substantive decision against the programme. National recognition by Antigua and Barbuda, by contrast, only confirms that the institution operates legally in the country.

Consequences You Need to Know

Several US states, including California, Indiana, Kansas and North Dakota, have listed UHSA as an institution whose graduates are not admitted to medical licensure there. Anyone planning the classic US route via residency and a state licence will encounter hard limits here. For Germany: the absence of recognised accreditation is a factor the Approbation authority will consider in the equivalency assessment. This is not a peripheral detail but the central factor in any decision for or against this location. If you are still considering UHSA, obtain written confirmation of the current accreditation status and the rotation places actually available before proceeding.

Admissions and Start Dates

UHSA operates rolling admissions. There is no central deadline; applications are reviewed on a continuous basis, and the university starts new cohorts several times a year. An entrance test like the TMS or MCAT is not required; the university looks at the science background from school or prior study and at sufficient English proficiency. Applicants without this foundation can enter via the pre-med preparatory course.

Fees and Living Costs

Reliable, officially published fee figures for UHSA are difficult to obtain. Widely varying amounts circulate online, most from recruitment agencies and in some cases tied to their own discount models. You should not rely on such figures, which is why none are given here. Ask the university directly for the current fee schedule for all study phases, in writing and specifying what additional costs arise during the clinical phase. Placement fees at individual hospitals, professional indemnity insurance and examination fees are typical items billed separately. For living costs on Antigua, as everywhere in the eastern Caribbean: rents and food are higher than in a German university city because almost everything is imported. Also factor in flights between Germany and the island as a fixed annual expense.

Programme Structure and Degree

The programme leads to the Doctor of Medicine (MD). The first years of study covering the Basic Sciences are spent on campus in Piccadilly; the clinical years take place at partner hospitals, which depending on the cohort may be on Antigua, in the USA, in Canada or in the UK. Teaching and examinations are in English. A German Staatsexamen is not awarded.

Recognition in Germany Is Not Automatic

Antigua and Barbuda is outside the EU, so there is no automatic recognition of the degree. For the German Approbation, § 3 Bundesärzteordnung applies: the responsible authority assesses whether your level of training is equivalent to the German medical degree. If it identifies material differences, you must sit the Kenntnisprüfung — an oral-practical examination at the level of the Second Part of the Medical Licensing Examination. Evidence of general German language proficiency and a medical language examination are also required. The competent authorities are the Approbation offices of the individual states, and their practice is not uniform: requirements, processing times and the assessment of individual universities vary from state to state.

The refused accreditation status documented by CAAM-HP is particularly relevant in this context. It does not formally rule out a German procedure, but it is a circumstance you cannot argue away with the authority and one that may complicate the assessment. Before applying, clarify with the Approbation authority in your preferred state how it handles degrees from this university, and obtain the answer in writing.

Πανεπιστημιούπολη & Ζωή

Piccadilly and English Harbour

The campus is located in a rural setting in the southeast of the island, overlooking Nelson’s Dockyard and the national park around English Harbour, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The scenery is beautiful, but the location is remote: St. John’s, where you will find shopping, government offices and the island’s largest hospital, is around 19 kilometres away. Bus services are irregular; many students organise a car or share lifts. Accommodation is either on campus or in apartments in the surrounding area.

Getting There and Daily Life

Antigua is connected via V. C. Bird International Airport, from Germany usually via London or another European hub. The cost of island life is high because almost everything is imported. And the isolation is real: the student body is small, the social environment is limited, and during hurricane season between June and November everyday life can be disrupted. Anyone who needs a lot of external structure should factor this in honestly.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Is the UHSA degree recognised in Germany?

Not automatically. For the Approbation, the state authority assesses the equivalency of your training under § 3 Bundesärzteordnung; if material differences are found, the Kenntnisprüfung follows. Since CAAM-HP has refused the university accreditation, you should obtain written confirmation in advance of how your preferred authority handles this degree.

What does the CAAM-HP status Accreditation Denied actually mean?

CAAM-HP is the WFME-recognised accreditation agency for the English-speaking Caribbean. The status means that the agency reviewed the programme and subsequently refused accreditation. This is different from an ongoing or not yet initiated process.

Is UHSA listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools?

Yes, the university is included there. This listing is, however, only a directory entry and says nothing about the quality or accreditation status of a programme. The two things are frequently confused.

Can I work in the USA with this degree?

This is at least significantly harder. Several US states, including California, Indiana, Kansas and North Dakota, have listed UHSA as a university whose graduates are not admitted to licensure there. If the US route is your goal, examine the situation in your target state very carefully before enrolling.

When does the programme start and how do I apply?

The university accepts applications on a rolling basis and starts new cohorts several times a year. There is no NC and no central admissions process; no entrance test is required. The science background and English proficiency are assessed.
