The Medical University of Plovdiv offers human medicine and dentistry entirely in English and is one of the most established medical universities in Bulgaria. Human medicine lasts six years and covers 360 ECTS; dentistry five to six years; pharmacy is also offered. There is no numerus clausus; selection is based on an online test in biology and chemistry. The program starts in the winter semester and tuition is 5,000 EUR per semester.

What defines the faculty

The university has its own university hospital and modern simulation centers where examination techniques are practiced before the first patient contact. The first two years are pre-clinical, covering anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, and embryology. From the third year the clinical phase begins with internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, neurology, and psychiatry, coupled with placements at the university hospital. The sixth year is a continuous practical year on the ward, equivalent in structure and function to the German Praktisches Jahr.

In terms of price, Plovdiv falls in the more affordable third of European locations: 5,000 EUR per semester in both human medicine and dentistry, totaling 60,000 EUR in tuition over twelve semesters. Living costs are also moderate at 450 to 650 EUR per month, as the city is less expensive than Sofia. The entrance test can be taken online; no travel to Bulgaria is required for the application. As an EU location, study-abroad BAföG is also available in principle, which can partially offset tuition costs.

Where the limitations lie

The language requires effort on two levels. Specialist instruction is in English, but in the clinical phase patients at the university hospital speak Bulgarian. Mandatory Bulgarian language classes run alongside the degree, and the Cyrillic script must also be learned from scratch. This is real additional workload alongside a dense timetable, even if it pays off directly from the third year onward. Those who start late will notice it immediately on the ward, because without the ability to take a patient history, meaningful patient contact is impossible.

The entrance test is a real filter: it covers upper secondary biology and chemistry content that must be firmly mastered. Those who later want to work outside Europe should also know that the Bulgarian accreditation agency NEAA is in the process of seeking recognition from the World Federation for Medical Education, and full recognition has not yet been granted. This point has no bearing on Approbation in Germany.

Who this location suits

Plovdiv is a good fit if you are looking for an English-language program with a dedicated university hospital, need moderate costs, and are willing to learn a second language alongside your studies. Those who do not want to sit a subject test or need a short journey back to Germany should compare other locations, as the journey home usually goes via Sofia. Whether your biology and chemistry foundations are sufficient for the test is assessed individually in a free consultation with Medschool Experts.

Entrance examination instead of grade average

There is no numerus clausus at the Medical University of Plovdiv. Requirements are a general university entrance qualification and solid English proficiency, as the program is taught in English. Selection is based on an online test in biology and chemistry covering upper secondary content. Your school leaving grade average is therefore irrelevant; your test result is not. The online format eliminates the need to travel to Bulgaria, but requires reliable technology and a quiet room. You can prepare using upper secondary material; no prior university study is needed.

Deadlines

The program starts in the winter semester; there is no mid-year entry. Places in the English-language program are limited, so an early start is doubly worthwhile: it secures flexibility in the process and allows more time to prepare for the test. Much can be set in motion before your final school-leaving certificate is issued. The process is generally entirely online. What timeline is realistic for you is assessed individually in a free consultation.

Tuition and living costs

Tuition is 5,000 EUR per semester in both human medicine and dentistry; over twelve semesters of human medicine that is 60,000 EUR. Additional one-time costs around the application plus ongoing textbooks, lab coats, and in dentistry your own instruments, are extra. Budget 450 to 650 EUR per month for rent, food, public transport, and insurance. Also factor in several trips home per year, which usually go via Sofia and can add up to a three-figure sum per year. Plovdiv is less expensive than Sofia, but as Bulgaria's second-largest city it offers a broad range of amenities. As an EU location, study-abroad BAföG is available in principle and can partially offset tuition.

Structure and language of instruction

Human medicine lasts six years and covers 360 ECTS; dentistry five to six years. All specialist instruction is in English: lectures, seminars, course materials, and examinations. The first two years are pre-clinical, covering anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, and embryology, accompanied by mandatory Bulgarian language classes. Medical terminology is new for everyone in the cohort, regardless of mother tongue. Solid school English provides the foundation; a language certificate is required with the application.

Clinical and practical training

From the third year the clinical phase begins with internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, neurology, and psychiatry, coupled with placements at the University Hospital of Plovdiv. In the simulation centers you practice examination techniques before your first patient contact, which makes the transition to the ward considerably smoother. The university has its own university hospital, so clinical teaching does not take place at external institutions. The sixth year is a continuous practical year on the ward. Elective clinical attachments can often be completed in Germany during semester breaks; whether they are credited is clarified in advance with the receiving clinic. Every passed examination is recorded with grade and score in the Transcript of Records, which you should keep complete.

Recognition in Germany

Bulgaria belongs to the European Union. The degree therefore falls under automatic recognition pursuant to Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V, as amended by Delegated Decision (EU) 2023/2383. Neither an equivalency nor a knowledge test is required; you submit the application to the Approbation authority in the federal state where you intend to work. Those who study dentistry in Plovdiv follow the same route to dental licensure. Processing times differ between federal states.

Life in Plovdiv

Plovdiv, with around 350,000 inhabitants, is Bulgaria's second-largest city, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, and was the European Capital of Culture in 2019. The climate has Mediterranean influences; the old town, cafés, and a lively student scene define daily life. Distances within the city are short, and the cost of living is below that of Sofia. Eating out, coffee, and public transport are inexpensive by German standards, which eases day-to-day life alongside your studies.

Housing and everyday life

University dormitory places or private apartments and shared flats near the hospital or city center are the common options. Rents are moderate by German standards, but the market thins out and prices rise just before the start of term when everyone is searching at the same time — those who search early live better and pay less. To get to Germany you travel around two hours to Sofia and then fly; buses and trains run several times a day. You should budget for several trips home per year. Within the city, public transport and walking get you everywhere easily; a car is not needed.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Do I need a specific grade average for Plovdiv?

No. There is no numerus clausus at the Medical University of Plovdiv. Requirements are a general university entrance qualification and solid English proficiency. A place is decided by an online test in biology and chemistry covering upper secondary content. Your grade average plays no role; your subject preparation in biology and chemistry does.

Do I need to learn Bulgarian?

Yes, as a mandatory part of the program. Without the language you cannot take a patient history in the clinical phase at the university hospital, as very few patients speak English. The Cyrillic script must also be learned from scratch. This is additional workload on top of a dense timetable, but it pays off directly from the third year onward.

What does studying cost?

Tuition is 5,000 EUR per semester in both human medicine and dentistry — 60,000 EUR over twelve semesters. Add 450 to 650 EUR per month for rent, food, public transport, and insurance. This places Plovdiv in the more affordable third of European locations, though studying abroad remains a significant investment. Study-abroad BAföG can help partially.

Can I also study dentistry in Plovdiv?

Yes. In addition to human medicine, the university offers dentistry in English, with five to six years of standard duration and an early practical component; tuition is the same at 5,000 EUR per semester. You will also need your own instruments and materials, which increases ongoing costs. Pharmacy is also offered and lasts five years. All programs are taught in English.

Is the degree recognized in Germany?

Yes. Bulgaria is an EU member; the degree falls under automatic recognition pursuant to Directive 2005/36/EC, Annex V. No equivalency or knowledge test is required; the application goes to the Approbation authority in your federal state. For dentistry the same route leads to dental licensure; state authorities are well acquainted with Bulgarian degrees.
