Rīga Stradiņš University is Latvia's leading medical institution and the largest destination for German-speaking medical students in the Baltic states. The medicine programme lasts six years, covers 360 ECTS, and is taught entirely in English; alongside it runs a five-year dentistry programme. The fee is €13,500 per academic year and remains the same throughout the entire course of study – which is by no means a given in Eastern Europe.

What makes the faculty stand out

The university was founded in 1950 as the Riga Medical Institute and has borne the name of Latvian surgeon Pauls Stradiņš since 2002. Approximately 12,474 students are enrolled, of whom 3,146 come from 86 countries. There is one member of teaching staff for every ten students, and clinical training is distributed across 35 training sites, including Pauls Stradiņš University Hospital, the Children's Hospital, and the Traumatology Clinic. The university's simulation centre is, according to the institution itself, the largest in the Baltic states.

One feature sets Riga apart from the other Baltic locations: since September 2024 the university has operated its own clinical campus at Elbe Klinikum Stade in Lower Saxony. Years one to three take place in Riga, clinical years four and five in Stade, and the sixth year at both sites. Patient communication in Stade is conducted in German. Places are limited and there is no entitlement to them. Anyone aiming for this path should treat it as a firm goal from the outset and not as an option that will simply materialise in the third year.

Where the limits lie

Latvian is a graded compulsory subject, not an optional extra. In the medicine programme, the course on medical terminology and the Latvian language covers nine ECTS; from the third year onwards you will need the language for patient history-taking at the bedside. Those completing their clinical years in Stade will largely shift this requirement into German – but this cannot be relied upon.

The cost is the second constraint. At €13,500 per year, fees alone add up to €81,000 over six years, with living costs and incidentals in a capital city on top. Anyone committed to pharmacy or psychology will find no English-language programme in Riga; both subjects run in Latvian only, and veterinary medicine is at a different institution. The university also does not accept transfer students into higher semesters: everyone begins in the first semester, and prior credits are recognised only for the first semester at most.

Who this location suits

Riga suits you if a large international cohort, a predictable fee over six years, and a broad clinical network matter to you, and if the option of clinical years in Stade appeals. Those who want to study in German, who are aiming for pharmacy or psychology, or who want to avoid a graded compulsory language module will be better served elsewhere. Whether this location fits your academic record, your budget, and your career objective is something Medschool Experts assesses clearly in a free consultation.

Admission

Latvia has no Numerus clausus, so your school-leaving grade does not determine your place. The prerequisite is a general university entrance qualification and proof of English proficiency; selection is by entrance examination in biology and chemistry. The examination covers upper-secondary school-level content, not university knowledge. Anyone who worked in the natural sciences during their final school years starts with an advantage. Participation in the process is generally possible entirely online; you do not need to travel to Latvia for this.

Deadlines

The university admits students in the winter and summer semesters. This means there are two application cycles per year, which is comparatively rare outside Germany: anyone who sits their school-leaving exams in summer does not lose a full year if the first attempt is unsuccessful. Places are limited in each cycle, and an early start gives you more time to prepare. Registration, application, and examination organisation are handled by Medschool Experts; what applies in your individual case is something we assess in a free consultation.

Tuition fees and living costs

The tuition fee is €13,500 per academic year, or €6,750 per semester, and remains constant throughout the entire course of study. Over twelve semesters this amounts to €81,000. Add to this one-off costs for application, registration, and travel, as well as ongoing expenses for textbooks, workwear, and insurance. For living in Riga, budget €650–850 per month; a room in a shared flat costs approximately €300–400, and a studio flat around €450–550. Over six years, fees and living costs together amount to roughly €135,000. Latvia is an EU member state, which means an application for study-abroad BAföG is in principle possible. Whether it is approved and in what amount is decided by the relevant education funding authority. Many students combine several sources of funding, such as family contributions, an education loan, and a scholarship; which paths are realistic in your situation is something we work through in a consultation.

Structure and language of instruction

The medicine programme lasts six years and covers 360 ECTS. Years one and two cover anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry; in the third year pre-clinical subjects and pathology are added, and patient contact begins here. Years four and five are clinical, and the sixth year consists of three rotation cycles, ending with the state final examination. Teaching and examinations are in English; Latvian runs alongside as a graded compulsory subject. Proof of English proficiency is part of the application; upper-secondary school English is an adequate foundation, and specialist vocabulary is built up during the first semesters.

Clinical training and practical work

From the fourth semester onwards, teaching takes place in purpose-fitted teaching rooms at Riga's major hospitals. Altogether 35 clinical training sites are available, plus a simulation centre that the university states is the largest in the Baltic states. Anyone aiming for the clinical campus in Stade should plan for this from the very start, as places there are limited and are not allocated automatically. Your academic record is documented in the Transcript of Records; you will need this document for any credit recognition and for your licence-to-practise application, so you should collect it in full from the beginning.

Recognition in Germany

Latvia has been a member of the European Union since 2004, and the Latvian medical training certificate is listed in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC as amended by Commission Delegated Decision (EU) 2023/2383. The degree is therefore automatically recognised: no equivalence examination, no knowledge examination, no German state examination. You apply for your Approbation at the competent authority of the federal state in which you wish to work. In Austria the decision rests with the Austrian Medical Chamber, and in Switzerland with the responsible federal authority following the same framework.

Life in Riga

Riga is the capital of Latvia with a population of around 600,000. The Old Town and the Art Nouveau district are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Baltic Sea is reachable within a short time, and there are direct flights to Germany. This makes the city more expensive than smaller locations in south-eastern Europe, though it remains well below the cost level of most German university cities. The largest single expense is rent. The faculty buildings and teaching hospitals are spread across the city, making public transport important; a monthly ticket costs around €30.

Housing and daily life

Shared flats typically cost €300–400 per month, and a studio flat around €450–550. A place in a double room in a hall of residence starts noticeably below this. Many students begin in a hall of residence or a furnished interim solution and look for something more permanent once they are on the ground. Distances in Riga are short, public transport is affordable, and because students from 86 countries are enrolled, you find connections quickly. The distance from home remains a factor all the same: spontaneous weekend visits are the exception even with direct flights, and the Latvian winter is long and dark.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Is the degree from Rīga Stradiņš University recognised in Germany?

Yes. Latvia is an EU member state, and the Latvian medical training certificate is listed in Annex V of Directive 2005/36/EC. Recognition is automatic, without an equivalence examination or a knowledge examination. The competent authority for the Approbation is the authority of the federal state in which you wish to work. In Austria and Switzerland the same framework applies.

What does the programme in Riga cost in total?

The fee is €13,500 per academic year and remains constant over six years, totalling €81,000. Adding €650–850 per month for living costs brings the total to around €135,000. Application, registration, textbooks, and trips home come on top. This sum deserves to be calculated carefully before accepting a place.

What is the clinical campus in Stade?

Since September 2024 the university has operated a branch at Elbe Klinikum Stade in Lower Saxony. Years one to three take place in Riga, clinical years four and five in Stade, and the sixth year at both sites. Patient communication in Stade is in German. Places are limited and are not allocated automatically.

Do I have to learn Latvian?

Yes, and it is a graded compulsory subject. In the medicine programme the course on medical terminology and Latvian covers nine ECTS. From the third year onwards you need the language for patient history-taking and daily ward life, because patients in the teaching hospitals speak Latvian. Starting early makes a significant difference later. Latvian proficiency is not required for admission.

Can I transfer into a higher semester?

No. The university does not accept transfer students into higher semesters; everyone begins in the first semester, and credits from previous studies are recognised only for the first semester at most. Conversely, a later transfer to a German university is possible in principle but not guaranteed, since each faculty decides individually on places and credit recognition.
