Universitätsmedizin Rostock traces its roots to the university founded in 1419, which had a medical faculty from the very beginning, and is today the largest hospital in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 1,219 beds. The institution has positioned itself under the Health Tech Medicine profile: medical technology, implant research, and digital methods are at the center, supported by collaboration with the university's technical faculties and the research institutions at the site.

In terms of admissions, Rostock stands out because in the Additional Aptitude Quota, only the TMS result matters — anyone who achieves a high standardized score there is in the running regardless of their Abitur grade. This location suits you if you are interested in technical medicine, prefer a cohort of 215 fellow students to a mass intake, and find a Baltic port city appealing. Those looking for a model curriculum without the classic separation of pre-clinical and clinical phases will find that elsewhere.

Εισαγωγή & Οικονομικά

Allocation runs nationwide through hochschulstart.de: 30 percent of places through the top Abitur grade quota, 10 percent through the Additional Aptitude Quota, and 60 percent through the university's own selection process. At Rostock, in the Additional Aptitude Quota, only the TMS result counts; the Abitur grade is not considered there. In the university selection process, the TMS is combined with the Abitur grade, with the weightings set by the University of Rostock in its admissions regulations.

There are no tuition fees. The only payment required is the University of Rostock's semester contribution, which is set anew each semester.

Standard Program at the Oldest University in the Baltic Region

The University of Rostock was founded in 1419 and has had a medical faculty from the outset. It is thus the oldest university in the Baltic region, and this continuity is more than folklore: the first chair for ear, nose, and throat medicine in Germany was established in Rostock. You study human medicine here as a classic standard program with a standard study period of six years and three months. The first two years form the pre-clinical section with anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, followed by a clinical section of at least three years with bedside teaching. The faculty deliberately interweaves theoretical and clinical content throughout the entire program and supplements lectures and seminars with courses in the skills lab and simulation center, as well as a broad elective offering.

Practical Year, Teaching Hospitals, and Examinations

Before the clinical section you must provide proof of a three-month nursing placement; during the clinical section, four months of Famulatur are added. The sixth year of study is the Praktisches Jahr (practical year) with three rotations of 16 weeks each in internal medicine, surgery, and an elective subject — with general practice also available as an option. One rotation may be split locally in Rostock; up to two rotations may be completed abroad. Students who remain at Universitätsmedizin have a mandatory PJ study day on Fridays and receive, according to the faculty, a monthly allowance of 400 euros. The regional academic teaching hospitals are also available for other sections.

Examinations take place in three sections of the medical licensing examination: after two years, before the practical year, and afterwards as an oral-practical exam. Passing the third section gives you the Staatsexamen and allows you to apply for the Approbation, which is valid nationwide and across the EU.

Hanseatic City Between the Warnow and the Baltic

The medical campus is situated on Schillingallee, southwest of the city center, within walking distance of lecture halls, institutes, and most clinics. Universitätsmedizin is not concentrated on a single site, however — it also extends to locations on Gertrudenstraße, Doberaner Straße, the Südstadt district, and Gehlsdorf on the far side of the Warnow. You should plan on commuting between buildings during the clinical section. Rostock is flat, so nearly everyone cycles; this is complemented by a dense tram network and an S-Bahn that gets you to Warnemünde beach in just over twenty minutes.

Housing is one of the tangible advantages: compared with university cities in the south and west of Germany, rents in Rostock are considerably more moderate, even if the market near the city center and at the start of the winter semester has tightened noticeably. The Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar operates several dormitories, and the shared apartment market in the Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt is well supplied. Student life centers around Universitätsplatz and Kröpeliner Straße; in summer it shifts to the Warnow riverfront, the city harbor, and the Hanse Sail festival.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

How long does the medicine program in Rostock take?

The standard study period is six years and three months: two years of pre-clinical study, at least three years of clinical study, and a practical year consisting of three rotations of 16 weeks each. This is followed by the third section of the medical licensing examination.

Is Rostock a model curriculum?

No, Rostock teaches human medicine as a standard program with a clear separation between pre-clinical and clinical phases. The faculty does, however, link theoretical and clinical content early on and supplements teaching with simulation and skills lab formats. Those looking for a structured, well-planned study architecture will be well served here.

Where does the practical year take place?

Internal medicine and surgery are compulsory rotations; the third rotation is chosen from a broad catalogue of subjects, including general practice. In addition to Universitätsmedizin itself, the regional academic teaching hospitals are available, and up to two rotations may be completed abroad. At Universitätsmedizin, Fridays are designated as a mandatory PJ study day.

What is Universitätsmedizin Rostock known for academically?

It is the maximum-care provider in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with around 30 clinics and outpatient departments and approximately 19 institutes. Particularly prominent are cardiac surgery, a certified oncology center, the transplant center, and research into neurodegenerative diseases. For you, this means a broad case spectrum without the pace of a million-person city.

How do I get a study place?

Study places are allocated nationwide through hochschulstart, via the top Abitur grade quota, the Additional Aptitude Quota, and the university selection process. Cut-off values vary from year to year, so we deliberately do not quote a figure here — refer to the current results instead. Medschool Experts advises on NC-free medical study places in Germany and abroad and does not handle applications through hochschulstart.
