George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology in Târgu Mureș is a special case among Romanian medical universities, having grown up bilingual. In 1945, the medical faculty of the Hungarian-language Bolyai University in Cluj was relocated to Târgu Mureș; in 1948 it became an independent Medical and Pharmaceutical Institute, still with Hungarian as the language of instruction. A Romanian-language track was added only in 1962. Since 2018, large parts of the dissolved Petru Maior University have been incorporated, so today engineering, economics, and law sit under the same roof alongside medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. The university is named after cell biologist George Emil Palade.
Languages of Instruction: English, Not German
A common misconception first: there is no German-language medicine program in Târgu Mureș. Instruction is in Romanian, Hungarian, and — since 2009 in Medicine and Dentistry — English. If you are coming from Germany and do not speak Romanian, the English-language program is realistically the only accessible option. It is run by a dedicated faculty for international medical studies, divided into a pre-clinical and a clinical department. The German connection of this university runs through a different channel: since 2019 it has operated its own campus in Hamburg, where instruction is also in English. Applications and fees there are handled separately from the Romanian campus. Do not confuse the two when applying.
How the Program Works
Medicine takes six years and follows the same structure as all Romanian faculties: two pre-clinical years covering anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology, followed by four clinical years at the city's hospitals. One point that many applicants underestimate is critical. At the bedside, patients speak Romanian or Hungarian, not English. Romanian is therefore on the timetable from day one, and how much you gain from the clinical years depends directly on how seriously you take that language component.
What to Realistically Plan For
Târgu Mureș has around 116,000 inhabitants, making it considerably smaller than Cluj or Timișoara. This means short distances and a manageable environment — but also less international infrastructure than in the larger university cities. There is also one characteristic worth knowing: the relationship between the Romanian and Hungarian student tracks is a recurring topic of institutional politics, including publicly aired disputes over language rights at the university. This barely affects the English-language program in daily life, but it does shape the atmosphere at the location.

How the Application Works
There is no written entrance exam for the English-language program. The university evaluates your application file according to published criteria and additionally conducts a selection interview. The process runs in two rounds: an early round in spring, in which you receive either a conditional offer, deferral to the regular round, or a rejection; and the regular summer round. Applicants who accept a conditional offer must pay a deposit within a short window. This deposit is credited toward the first year's fee but is non-refundable.
Fees and Living Costs
For the 2026/2027 academic year, the university has set the fee for Medicine and Dentistry in English at 10,000 euros per year. The Romanian- and Hungarian-language tracks are set at 15,000 Lei per year, but without the corresponding language skills these are not a realistic option. Work through the full six-year cost before committing, and factor in examination and administrative fees. Reliable cost-of-living averages for Târgu Mureș are published less frequently than for Bucharest or Cluj; the rent level is noticeably below that of the larger cities, and dormitory places are cheaper than the private market but limited in number. Structure and Degree
The program spans six years and 360 ECTS credits; instruction in the international track is entirely in English. After the pre-clinical years comes clinical training at the city's hospitals, so patient contact begins in year three. The program concludes with the Romanian final examination and the title Doctor-medic. You do not sit the German Staatsexamen.
Recognition in Germany
Romania has been an EU member since 2007. The Romanian medical degree therefore falls under the Professional Qualifications Directive 2005/36/EC and is automatically recognized in Germany — no knowledge examination, as would be required for degrees from third countries. That said, not everything is handled automatically: you apply for the Approbation yourself at the responsible state authority, and depending on the federal state you must demonstrate general German language proficiency and pass a specialist language examination. These requirements apply formally even if German is your native language. A mid-program transfer to a German university, on the other hand, is not straightforward. Each faculty decides individually on credit recognition, and places in higher semesters are scarce.

Life in Târgu Mureș
Târgu Mureș — known in German as Neumarkt am Mieresch — lies in the heart of Transylvania and has around 116,000 inhabitants. The city has a strong Hungarian character and is considered the Transylvanian location with the largest Hungarian minority in numerical terms. You see this in the cityscape through bilingual signage, the Cultural Palace built between 1911 and 1913, and the Teleki-Bolyai Library. The university, hospitals, and city center are all close to one another.
Housing, Community, and Getting There
Students live in dormitories or in privately rented shared apartments. There is no large German-speaking student scene as in Bucharest or Cluj, but the English-language cohort gets to know each other quickly because it is small. For travel, you use Transilvania Airport right next to the city, which serves destinations including Budapest, Memmingen, and London. Alternatively, you can fly into Cluj and cover the last stretch by bus or train.
Συχνές Ερωτήσεις
Can I study medicine in German in Târgu Mureș?
No. The languages of instruction are Romanian, Hungarian, and English. The only German connection at this university is its link to Germany — not the teaching: since 2019 it has operated a campus in Hamburg, where instruction is also in English.
Is there an entrance exam?
Not for the English-language program. Selection is based on an evaluation of your application file according to set criteria and a selection interview. Whether you receive a place depends on the outcome of that evaluation and the number of available spots.
What does the program cost per year?
For 2026/2027, the university has set the annual fee for Medicine and Dentistry in English at 10,000 euros. Add living costs, travel, and administrative fees. A deposit paid after a conditional offer is credited toward the fee but is not refunded if you withdraw.
Do I need Romanian?
Not for lectures — but very much for clinical work. From year three you will be working with patients who speak Romanian or Hungarian. Romanian is therefore part of the curriculum, and anyone who neglects the language component loses a large part of the clinical learning value.
Is the degree recognized in Germany?
Yes. Romania is an EU member; the medical degree falls under Directive 2005/36/EC and is automatically recognized. You still have to apply for the Approbation yourself at the responsible state authority and submit the required language documentation.
