Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara was founded by decree on 30 December 1944 and opened on 15 July 1945. Its main building carries a piece of Banat history: it housed the German-language institution Banatia from 1925 to 1944, then briefly served as a Soviet military hospital before becoming the seat of the medical university. Today the institution comprises faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy; clinical training is distributed across more than two dozen teaching hospitals in the city. The university is named after the pathologist Victor Babeș.

Languages and Program Offerings

Medicine is taught in Romanian, English, and French; Dentistry in Romanian and English; Pharmacy in English for the international track. There is no German-language medicine program, even though Timișoara otherwise bears German traces in many places — from the Nikolaus Lenau High School to the German State Theatre. For applicants from Germany, the English-language program is therefore the practical route. Romanian remains compulsory regardless, since you will be working with Romanian-speaking patients during your clinical years.

The Key Difference: There Is an Entrance Exam

Timișoara differs clearly from Cluj, Iași, and Târgu Mureș in one respect. Even applicants from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland go through a genuine competitive selection process under what is called Admission Type III: a multiple-choice examination followed by a language test in the chosen language of instruction. This is not a straightforward document review — it is a test you need to prepare for substantively. Applicants who discover this only shortly before applying will face a problem. Conversely, for candidates with solid knowledge of biology and chemistry, this is more of an opportunity than a hurdle, since selection depends less heavily on the Abitur grade.

Location in the Banat

Timișoara is Romania's third-largest city, situated roughly 50 kilometers from the Hungarian border, with the Serbian border also close by. Its Habsburg past as Temeswar still shapes the cityscape today, which is why the city is often described as a little Vienna. The Romanian Revolution began here in 1989, and in 2023 Timișoara was a European Capital of Culture. For you, the border location means primarily one thing: short routes to Central Europe, both via the airport and by bus and rail toward Budapest. Add to this a German cultural heritage that is historically rooted in the Banat and remains visible in the city's daily life, even if the German-speaking minority is small today. You will still be studying in English, with Romanian in the clinic.

Competitive Selection Rather Than Document Review

Applicants with Romanian, EU, EEA, Swiss, or British citizenship apply under Admission Type III. Selection is based on a multiple-choice examination with questions relevant to the chosen program, plus a language test in the language of instruction — for the foreign-language tracks, at a minimum B2 level. The university provides sample questions and past examination papers online, which makes preparation considerably easier. Typically there is a main round with the exam at the end of July and a follow-up round in September. Registration is handled through the university's application portal.

Fees and Living Costs

For the 2026/2027 academic year, the university has set the Admission Type III fee for Medicine — including the English and French tracks — at 9,000 euros per year; Pharmacy is 8,000 euros. A confirmation fee is due when accepting a place, along with an advance payment toward the annual fee. For living costs, Timișoara is cheaper than Cluj: market analyses for the second quarter of 2026 showed an average rent of around 420 euros for a two-room apartment, with an upward trend. Σπουδές & Αναγνώριση

Six Years and a Great Deal of Clinical Work

Medicine spans six years and 360 ECTS credits. After the pre-clinical foundations, the program shifts into the hospitals — and Timișoara has many: the university uses more than two dozen teaching hospitals in the city, which is an advantage for the distribution of rotations. The international program is taught in English; patient-facing work runs in Romanian. The program concludes with the Romanian final examination, not the German Staatsexamen.

Returning to Germany

Romania has been an EU member since 2007. The medical degree therefore falls under Directive 2005/36/EC and is automatically recognized in Germany, without an equivalency or knowledge check. The formal steps remain: an Approbation application to the responsible state authority, proof of general German language proficiency, and in most federal states a specialist language examination. Anyone considering a mid-program transfer to Germany should be realistic. The receiving faculty decides on credit recognition, and places in higher semesters are scarce. Plan the program as if you will complete it in Timișoara.

Πανεπιστημιούπολη & Ζωή

A Little Vienna in the Banat

Timișoara is green, compact, and easy to navigate on foot or by bike. The city center with its Habsburg squares was extensively renovated for the 2023 Capital of Culture year. The German heritage of the Banat Swabians is still present today — through the German State Theatre, German-language schools, and a cultural center. You will not find a German-speaking environment this naturally integrated at any other Romanian medical location.

Housing and Getting There

Students live in dormitories or shared apartments; the rent level is below Cluj's, though rising. The location is convenient for travel: Timișoara Airport is one of the country's largest and has direct connections to Germany, including Munich and Dortmund. Those who prefer ground travel can reach Budapest and Belgrade within a few hours by bus or train.

Συχνές Ερωτήσεις

Can I study medicine in German in Timișoara?

No, there is no German-language medicine program there. Instruction is in Romanian, English, and French. You will still encounter German frequently in the city — at the German State Theatre or German-language schools — but not in the medical university's lecture halls.

Is there really an entrance exam for EU applicants?

Yes, and this is the most important difference from the other Romanian locations. Under Admission Type III, you sit a multiple-choice examination and complete a language test in your chosen language of instruction. The university provides sample questions; targeted preparation in biology and chemistry is essential.

What does the program cost?

For 2026/2027, the university lists 9,000 euros per year for Medicine under Admission Type III — including the English and French tracks — and 8,000 euros for Pharmacy. A confirmation fee is added when accepting a place, along with the standard registration and administrative costs.

When do the selection rounds take place?

Typically there is a main round with the exam at the end of July and a follow-up round in September, each requiring prior online registration through the application portal. The university sets the exact dates each year in the admissions calendar — check there directly before making plans.

How easy is it to get home from Timișoara?

Easier than from most Romanian locations. The city's airport offers direct connections to Germany, including Munich and Dortmund. The Hungarian border is also roughly 50 kilometers away, making bus and rail connections via Budapest a realistic option as well.
