Medial means located towards the midline of the body. In the standard anatomical position the little finger lies medially and the thumb laterally. The reference point is the median plane, which divides the body into two equal halves.

Without this convention, findings would not be unambiguous – which is why it is one of the first things taught in every anatomy lecture.
