The transverse plane runs horizontally and divides the body into an upper and a lower section. It is the plane in which classic computed tomography scans are acquired, which is why it is also called the axial plane.

When you read CT images, the convention is to view the slice from below: what appears on the left of the image is on the patient's right.
Movements in the transverse plane are internal and external rotation.
