BAföG is Germany's state student funding scheme. It also covers studying outside Germany: within the EU an entire degree can be funded, and on top of the basic rate there is a tuition fee supplement of up to €5,600 per year that you do not have to repay.

The tuition fee supplement is the decisive point: it is paid as a full grant and covers a considerable share of the semester fees at many European locations.
