Endodontics is the field of dentistry concerned with the inside of the tooth — the pulp and the root canal system. Its aim is to save a tooth whose nerve is inflamed or has died.

The best-known treatment is root canal therapy: the inflamed or dead pulp tissue is removed, and the canal system is shaped, disinfected and sealed tightly.
Endodontics is considered one of the technically most demanding areas of dentistry, because the work takes place in a canal system that often measures less than a millimetre and cannot be seen directly.
