Frontal plane

The frontal plane runs parallel to the forehead and divides the body into a front and a back section. It is perpendicular to the sagittal plane and is also called the coronal plane.

In radiology, coronal sections are the standard, for example when assessing the paranasal sinuses or the hip joints.

Movements in the frontal plane are abduction and adduction, that is, moving a limb away from and back towards the body.
