The Landarztquote is a pre-allocation quota with which German federal states award medical study places independently of school-leaving grades. In return, applicants commit by contract to working as a general practitioner in an underserved rural region for around ten years after completing their specialist training.

Depending on the federal state, the quota covers roughly five to eight percent of study places. Selection runs through a separate procedure with a subject-specific aptitude test, work experience in healthcare and a structured interview.
Bear the length of the commitment in mind: twenty years can easily pass between enrolment and the end of the obligation, and contractual penalties in the six-figure range apply if it is not fulfilled.
