The sagittal plane runs from front to back and divides the body into a right and a left half. When it runs exactly through the middle, it is called the median plane. It is one of the three main anatomical planes.

The three main planes are the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes. CT and MRI images are reconstructed in exactly these planes.
The name goes back to the sagittal suture of the skull, which runs in this direction.
