A Testat is a course-accompanying assessment, usually oral or practical, that confirms your participation in a course. Testate are a prerequisite for earning a Schein (course certificate) and therefore for admission to the major state examinations.

Testate mainly accompany anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. The typical formats are an oral examination at the dissection specimen or a short written check before a course session starts.
Each university sets the number of retake attempts itself in its study and examination regulations – usually between two and three attempts. If you use up every attempt, you cannot complete the course and therefore cannot finish that stage of your studies. Our series on German examination law covers the rules faculty by faculty.
