The Transcript of Records is a university's official record of academic achievement. It lists every subject taken, the grades, the number of contact hours and the ECTS credits earned, and it is the basis for any credit transfer when you change university.

The level of detail is what counts: German state examination offices and faculties only grant credit for what demonstrably matches their own curriculum in hours and content. A transcript that lists grades without contact hours regularly leads to follow-up queries.
That is why this document belongs, together with the Diploma Supplement and the course descriptions, to the paperwork you should start collecting from your first semester onwards.
