Zwangsexmatrikulation is the ending of your studies by official decision, usually after you have finally failed an examination. In human medicine it takes effect nationwide: a section you have finally failed closes the degree programme to you at every German faculty.

It is usually triggered by a third unsuccessful attempt at a state examination or at an examination taken during the course. The effect reaches beyond your own university: a finally failed section of the Ärztliche Prüfung, the German state examination in medicine, rules out studying medicine in Germany again.
Universities elsewhere in Europe run their own examination regulations and assess German coursework independently. A fresh start, or entry into a higher semester, is therefore often possible, and the EU degree is then recognised automatically in Germany.
