GMC Registration After Studying Medicine Abroad
How UK students come back as doctors: registration with a European medical degree without PLAB, the PLAB route for other degrees, and what the 2026 prioritisation law means for training posts.
Every doctor who works in the UK needs registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise. For a UK student who studies medicine abroad, the route to that registration depends on one thing: the country that awards the degree. Your passport does not decide it. The qualification does.
A primary medical qualification awarded in an EEA country or Switzerland is a relevant European qualification. The GMC accepts it as evidence of your knowledge and skills and does not assess it again. You do not sit PLAB. A degree from outside the EEA leads to GMC registration through PLAB 1 and PLAB 2.
GMC registration after studying medicine abroad: the two routes
| Where you graduate | GMC route | Exam | Examples from our partner universities |
|---|---|---|---|
| EEA country or Switzerland | Relevant European qualification | None; the degree is accepted | Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Pleven, Brno, Hradec Králové, Osijek, Nicosia |
| Outside the EEA | International medical graduate | PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 | Foča, Banja Luka, Niš |
Registration with a European medical degree, step by step
- Step 1: Open a GMC Online account and check your qualification on the GMC country page for the state where you graduated.
- Step 2: Have your diploma verified at source. The GMC uses the EPIC service of ECFMG for this.
- Step 3: Provide evidence of your knowledge of English and a certificate of good standing if you have already been registered elsewhere.
- Step 4: Apply for provisional or full registration. Which of the two depends on whether your degree already includes the internship year; we clarify that with you for each university.
- Step 5: Identity check and licence to practise.
The PLAB route for degrees from outside the EEA
Graduates of medical schools outside the EEA first have their qualification accepted by the GMC; the school has to be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. PLAB 1 is a written paper with 180 single-best-answer questions. PLAB 2 is a clinical exam held in Manchester. After both parts you apply for registration. Students who choose Foča or Niš for the low tuition prepare for PLAB during their clinical years, so the exam follows directly on the final state exam.
Foundation Programme and specialty training since March 2026
On 5 March 2026 the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act became law. It sets the order in which training posts are offered. For the Foundation Programme, graduates of medical schools in the UK and the Republic of Ireland come first, together with graduates from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. British citizens with a degree from another country can apply, and posts are offered to the prioritised group first.
For specialty training the picture is different. In the 2026 round, British citizens with a medical degree from abroad belonged to the prioritised group, as did every doctor who had completed the Foundation Programme. From 2027 prioritisation applies at shortlisting and at the offer stage. The Secretary of State can adjust the groups by regulation, so check the position for your year of application.
How graduates from Europe enter the NHS in practice
Most returners do not need FY1. They complete their internship year as part of the European degree or straight after it and apply to the GMC for full registration. Then they take a post as a locally employed doctor at FY2 level, often titled clinical fellow or trust-grade doctor. Hospitals advertise these posts all year round on NHS Jobs.
For the application to core or specialty training you document your foundation competences with the CREST form, the Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training. A consultant who has worked with you for at least three months signs it. With that form and your GMC registration you apply through the national recruitment system like any other doctor.
One detail for Brno: UK hospitals recruit directly at Masaryk University, among them teams linked to King's College and Liverpool. Students there meet NHS recruiters before they graduate.
Keep a second door open
An EEA degree is valid across the European Union. Graduates who decide against the UK start specialist training in Germany, Switzerland or Ireland, where junior doctors are in demand. Our MedPathway Germany programme is free for our students. We plan both routes with you from the first consultation. Book your free consultation.

FAQ: GMC registration after studying medicine abroad
Do UK citizens need PLAB after studying medicine in Europe?
No, if the degree was awarded in an EEA country or Switzerland. It counts as a relevant European qualification and the GMC accepts it without PLAB.
Is a Bulgarian medical degree recognised by the GMC?
Yes. Bulgaria is a member of the EU and the EEA. The Bulgarian medical diploma is a relevant European qualification.
Can I apply for the Foundation Programme with a degree from abroad?
You can apply. Since March 2026 places are offered first to graduates of UK and Irish medical schools, so most returners enter the NHS with full registration in a post at FY2 level.
Am I prioritised for specialty training as a British citizen with a degree from abroad?
In the 2026 recruitment round British citizens with an international medical degree were part of the prioritised group for specialty training. The groups can be changed by regulation for later rounds.
Does the prioritisation law apply to dentists?
No. Dental training posts are not included in the prioritisation.
Does my nationality matter for GMC registration?
For registration, no. The GMC looks at the qualification you hold, not at your passport.
