Medical Engineering
The English-taught equivalent of Medizintechnik: design, build and test medical devices, prostheses and hospital technology.
What you study
Medical engineering is the closest English-taught equivalent to the German degree in Medizintechnik. Compared with biomedical engineering, it is more hands-on and device-focused: you learn how medical equipment is designed, built, tested and maintained, from surgical instruments to prosthetic limbs and hospital technology.
Curriculum year by year
Year 1: Engineering foundations
- Engineering mathematics and mechanics
- Electrical and electronic principles
- Materials for engineering
- Computer-aided design and workshop practice
Year 2: Medical engineering core
- Anatomy and physiology for engineers
- Biomechanics of the human body
- Medical instrumentation and sensors
- Design of medical devices
Year 3: Application
- Prosthetics, orthotics and rehabilitation technology
- Medical device regulation and safety
- Individual engineering project
- Optional placement year in industry before the final year
The BEng takes three years, or four with a placement year. The integrated MEng takes four to five years.
Tuition fees for international students
- University of Bradford (UK): approx. 24,500 to 27,000 € per year
If you are interested in medical technology but prefer a broader engineering degree, have a look at Biomedical Engineering, which is offered at nine more universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.
Career after graduation
Graduates work as design engineers for medical device companies, clinical engineers in hospitals, in prosthetics and orthotics and in quality and regulatory roles.
