From a student blog to Medschool Experts: my story

How did a student blog turn into Medschool Experts?

In 2015 I began my dentistry degree in Sofia and shortly afterwards started the blog marcel-in-bulgarien.de. A YouTube channel and an Instagram profile followed. The questions that reached me through them first became a sideline and later became Medschool Experts, which today places students at more than 25 European universities.

Why did I start writing in the first place?

Because nobody could tell me anything. When I went to Bulgaria in 2015, I did not know the country, I did not know a single person there, and everything I could find about the degree came from providers who wanted to sell something. I was sceptical and started writing down what I actually experienced – the small groups, the oral examinations, the dissection course, but also the downsides.

The blog ran under my former name; in 2022 I changed my name to Marcel Kloos. Anyone who comes across old posts or my guest articles from my student days will therefore find a different name – it is the same author.

When did telling my story become a job?

That point crept up on me. At some stage half of my inbox consisted of questions from people who had been rejected in Germany and did not know what to do next. Much of it could not be answered with a blog article, because every case was different: different prior education, different funding, different family situation.

That is why I started supporting prospective students individually while I was still studying. That was the beginning of Medschool Experts – not a business plan, but a queue in my inbox.

What does Medschool Experts do today?

We place students in human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy programmes at universities in Europe and support them from the first conversation through to the start of their career. By now that means more than 500 students placed at more than 25 universities.

Part of this work is still what began in 2015: insights that are freely available. The YouTube channel runs under the Medschool Experts name today, with interviews featuring students who are currently at the respective locations. I am proud of that, because we started doing it when nobody else was.

What did a degree from abroad change for me?

It was an international ticket. With my graduation in 2021 I was able to become a dentist – and that is ultimately what made moving to Switzerland possible for me. I have lived in Bern since December 2023, and my son is growing up here. Without an EU-recognised degree, this path would not have been possible.

Today I run Medschool Experts full-time. My background as a dentist nevertheless remains the core of the work: I can judge what a curriculum really means, because I went down the same road myself.

Why the old blog posts now live here

The texts from my student days are no longer brand new, but they describe something that no amount of research can replace: what the first year feels like, how an oral test works, what happens in the dissection room. That is why they are appearing here in the magazine one by one – revised, with today's figures, and clearly marked as to what dates back to then.

To be honest about it: some of what I wrote as a student I would phrase differently today. Prices have changed, Bulgaria adopted the euro in 2026, and with ten years' distance you look at your own studies more soberly.
