Study Transfer from Spain: from Valencia, Madrid and More to a New University

Study Transfer from Spain: from Valencia, Madrid and More to a New University

Spain attracts with its climate, quality of life and a strong medical tradition. Several private universities accept international students without an NC, and the degree is recognised as an EU degree without any additional procedure.

Two things are often underestimated, however: the price level of private universities and the role of Spanish in the clinical phase. When either becomes a problem — or if an exam consistently fails — Medschool Experts arranges a study transfer to Bosnia, Serbia, Malta and beyond. Passed subjects transfer with you; those who plan ahead generally lose no academic year.

Where do German-speaking students study medicine in Spain?

  • University of Valencia — medicine, a long-established faculty with a large teaching hospital. To the location article.
  • CEU San Pablo, Madrid — dentistry, private university with an English-language programme. To the location article.
  • Other private universities — including the Universidad Europea, the Universidad Católica de Valencia and the CEU Cardenal Herrera, all with admission via a selection process rather than school-leaving grade.

Tuition fees at private universities are approximately 15,000 to 25,000 EUR per academic year. A regional overview is available in the article Studying medicine in Malta, Cyprus and Spain.

Why do students transfer from Spain to another university?

The total bill

15,000 to 25,000 EUR per academic year adds up to a high six-figure sum over six years. When financing falls through, changing location determines whether the degree continues.

Spanish in the clinical phase

From the third year at the latest, Spanish becomes indispensable in patient contact. Those who find this closes off access to clinical work will find better conditions at a university with fully English-language clinical training.

One subject becomes the bottleneck

Failing an exam often means losing an entire academic year — and paying the fee for it regardless.

How does the study transfer from Spain work?

  1. Document review. Transcript of Records with ECTS and grades, plus enrolment certificate. Free and non-binding.
  2. Determine target year. Comparison with the target university's curriculum before anything is submitted.
  3. Reserve a place. Places in higher years are allocated in order of receipt of complete documents.
  4. Recognition procedure. The target university formally credits prior learning; we help prepare translations and certified copies.
  5. Enrol and continue studying. Deregistration in Spain is the final step.

Where can you transfer to from Spain?

MediCampus Europeo, Malta

For those who want to stay in the Mediterranean region: campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, medicine in English, Maltese MFHEA licence, English as the everyday official language. Transfer from the second year onwards, 14,500 EUR per year with a lump-sum payment, start in October. To the Valletta location article.

University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

One of our core locations, for which we hold representation in the German-speaking region. State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, EU-compliant accreditation until 2033. 3,500 EUR per academic year, start in November, practical year optionally completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. For dentistry the natural choice — with its own clinic and phantom labs. Placements here are generally very high — transfers usually enter a high year of study. To the Foča study guide.

University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital, medicine in English, 360 ECTS, MD degree. 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year. To the Niš location article.

The full list of all NC-free options can be found in the study transfer article on Bulgaria.

The level of placement depends on the individual case

All pathways mentioned here are designed to achieve the highest possible year placement for you through us — with no or minimal loss of time. However, this only becomes binding after your documents have been reviewed. As a rule of thumb: usually no more than two exams may be outstanding, and their ECTS credits must not exceed a certain threshold, for a transfer into the next higher year to be possible. We clarify what is feasible in your specific case in a free consultation.

What the transfer means financially

Private universities in Spain charge approximately 15,000 to 25,000 EUR per academic year. Malta costs 14,500 EUR, Niš 6,000 EUR and Foča 3,500 EUR. Transferring in the third year, over four remaining years, that is up to 86,000 EUR less in tuition fees depending on the destination. Our placement fee is success-based: if no study place materialises, you incur no costs.

Why you should seek advice as early as possible

  • Places are limited and allocated in order of receipt of complete documents.
  • Deadlines are running: Malta starts in October, Foča in November, Niš admits each quarter.
  • Being enrolled is the better starting position — so book the consultation before the next resit.

Reviewing your documents takes a few days and costs nothing. Book a free study consultation.

The author's view

Spain is a wonderful country to live in and the faculties are good. The sticking point is almost always the same: without solid Spanish, the clinical phase becomes a spectator sport — and that is exactly where it is decided whether one becomes a capable doctor.

Anyone who realises this in the second or third year should act rather than hope. A transfer is a location decision, not a failure.

Summary

  • A study transfer from Spanish universities is possible — for both medicine and dentistry.
  • Passed subjects are creditable; those who plan in time lose no academic year.
  • Most common destinations: MediCampus Europeo Malta (14,500 EUR/year), Niš (6,000 EUR), Foča (3,500 EUR).
  • Initial consultation and document review are free; the fee is success-based.

Spain is an attractive location — but no location suits everyone. What matters most is how early you get in touch.
