Which medical universities exist in Bulgaria?

Bulgaria has six universities with English-language medicine or dentistry programs. We have already arranged transfers from all of them.

• Medical University Sofia (MU Sofia) — the largest and most well-known institution in the country, medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy in English, six years, 360 ECTS. To the location article.
• Medical University Varna "Prof. Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov" — medicine and dentistry in English, modern campus on the Black Sea. To the location article.
• Medical University Plovdiv — medicine and dentistry in English, second-largest medical university in the country. Sofia or Plovdiv compared.
• Medical University Pleven — medicine in English, known for its simulation center and telemedicine facilities. To the location article.
• Trakia University Stara Zagora — medicine and veterinary medicine in English. To the location article.
• University "Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov" Burgas — newest medical faculty in the country, medicine in English.

Also included are the Faculty of Medicine at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the veterinary faculty at the University of Forestry Sofia. None of these places are allocated through the German Numerus clausus. Tuition fees range from approximately 8,000 to 10,000 EUR per academic year depending on the institution and subject.

Why do students transfer out of Bulgaria?

From our placement experience, we essentially know three reasons. None of them is a failure, and none reflects badly on the Bulgarian faculties — they provide good training, that is beyond question.

The academic situation didn't work out

A subject in the second or third year becomes a bottleneck. The resit is only in the next round, the academic year cannot be completed, and what begins as a semester's delay quickly becomes a full year. At this point there are two options: try again at the same faculty — or take the already-passed credits along and continue studying where the exam rhythm fits better. Both can be right. The personal situation didn't work out

The city, the living situation, the cohort size, the supervisor-to-student ratio, the distance from home. These are not small matters — six years is a long time, and those who don't feel at home at their study location study less effectively. Transferring to a smaller faculty with closer supervision resolves this in many cases.

Something changed personally

Illness in the family, a relationship, a financial setback, a move. When 8,000 to 10,000 EUR in tuition per year suddenly becomes unmanageable, a location at 3,500 EUR per year is not a last resort — it is the sensible decision.

What each university wants to see differs from one institution to the next and changes from year to year — and a transfer planned around an outdated detail costs exactly the time you were trying to save.

Where can you transfer from Bulgaria?

Three locations account for the majority of transfers. They differ considerably in costs, language, and environment — which one fits depends on where you are in your studies.

University of East Sarajevo, Faculty of Medicine Foča (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

One of our core locations, for which we hold the representation in the German-speaking world. State faculty with its own university hospital, medicine and dentistry in English, listed in ANABIN, accredited in compliance with EU standards until 2033. Tuition is 1,750 EUR per semester, i.e. 3,500 EUR per academic year. The academic year begins in November; the practical year can optionally be completed entirely at a German teaching hospital. University of Niš, Faculty of Medicine (Serbia)

Large state university with its own university hospital. Medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, degree: MD. Extensive clinical training, clear exam structure, predictable course of study. The fee is 1,500 EUR per quarter, i.e. 6,000 EUR per academic year — and is one of the few that can be paid quarterly. Worthwhile if you still have at least three years of study ahead. MediCampus Europeo, Malta

Campus in Il-Furjana near Valletta, medicine in English, six years, 360 ECTS, clinical section from the third year onward. The degree "Doctor of General Medicine MD" is awarded by Trakia State University; the institution holds the Maltese MFHEA license. English is an official language in Malta, so daily life runs without a second national language. The fee is 14,500 EUR per year with a single payment, and the academic year begins in October. The placement year depends on the individual case

All paths described here are designed to achieve the highest possible year placement for you through us — with no or minimal loss of time. What that means concretely differs from person to person, and we would rather look at your situation than publish a rule that fits nobody. What the transfer costs — and what you save

Bulgaria sits in the mid-to-upper range of NC-free locations at around 8,000 to 10,000 EUR per academic year. Foča costs 3,500 EUR per year, Niš 6,000 EUR. Someone transferring in the third year still has four years ahead — at Foča that is roughly 18,000 to 26,000 EUR less in tuition fees depending on the original university, plus lower living costs of realistically 450 to 500 EUR per month.

Why you should seek advice as early as possible

A study transfer succeeds with fewer losses the earlier it is planned. Three reasons argue against waiting:

• Places are limited. In higher years, a place only comes up when one becomes free. The earlier we know about you, the more options are still open.
• The academic years start at different times. Foča begins in November, Malta in October, Niš runs on a quarterly rhythm. The more lead time we have, the more calmly the move can be arranged.
• Another resit can worsen your starting position. As long as you are enrolled, your negotiating position is at its best. That is why it is worth having the conversation before you register for the next attempt.
