Studying Medicine in Europe as a Nigerian Student 2026

Where in Europe is medicine taught in English?

State universities in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia run full six-year medical programmes delivered in English, running in parallel with their national-language tracks. The English programme is the whole degree, not a preparatory year. Nigerian applicants enter the same programme as every other international student.

The Medical University of Plovdiv lists Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing among its English-taught degrees. Semmelweis University in Budapest describes its General Medicine programme as twelve semesters and 360 credits, leading to an M.D. The Medical University of Varna publishes separate English-language fee schedules for Medicine and for Dental Medicine, which is the clearest sign that both tracks are permanent rather than occasional.

The local language still appears. Plovdiv states that students study Bulgarian during the first two years of the programme and that no Bulgarian is required before arrival. That is a ward-round requirement, not a lecture-hall one: by the third year a student is taking histories from patients in Plovdiv who do not speak English.

Which country and which university suit a particular applicant is not a question with one public answer, because entry rules differ by institution and by profile. Our university overview shows the range, and a free individual consultation is the faster way to narrow it.

How long is the degree and what is actually in it?

Medicine runs six years almost everywhere in Europe, structured as twelve semesters. Semmelweis University splits its M.D. programme into two years of basic sciences, one pre-clinical year and three clinical years, totalling 360 credits. Dentistry is shorter in some countries: Semmelweis lists five years and 311 credits.

The shape is familiar. Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and histology dominate the first two years; pathology and pharmacology sit in the middle; the last three years are spent in hospital departments, rotating through internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and the rest. Bulgarian dental programmes run the full six years, which is visible in Varna's fee schedule, where dental tuition is listed for years one through six.

Two details matter more to a Nigerian applicant than the curriculum outline. The degree is a single long cycle, so there is no separate bachelor's stage to complete first. And the clinical years are taught inside the university's own hospitals, which is where the language training from the early years is spent.

What does six years of tuition actually cost?

Published tuition for English-language Medicine ran from 7,000 to 10,000 euro per year at the two Bulgarian universities checked here, and Semmelweis University in Hungary listed 9,340 euro per semester. Fees are set per academic year and per year of study, and at both Bulgarian universities they fall after the early years.

Hungary sits higher. Semmelweis University lists 9,340 euro per semester for both General Medicine and Dentistry, and charges a separate admission procedure fee of USD 400. Twelve semesters of medicine at that published rate come to 112,080 euro, which is more than double the Plovdiv total.

A worked example makes the shape concrete. Take an applicant admitted to English-language Medicine at the Medical University of Plovdiv on the 2025/2026 schedule. Tuition over six years is 50,000 euro. The online entrance examination costs 300 euro, made up of a 30 euro processing charge and 270 euro for the exam date. The Bulgarian long-stay visa is 100 euro under the consular tariff. Plovdiv's own fee sheet states that the tuition figure excludes accommodation, health insurance, textbooks and educational handbooks, and its student FAQ puts a hostel place at about 80 euro per month.

Two caveats on that arithmetic. Fee schedules are republished every academic year, so a student starting in 2027 pays whatever the 2027 schedule says. And the figures above are for Medicine in English; Plovdiv's published English-language dentistry fees start at 7,000 euro for the first two years and fall to 8,200 euro from year three, while pharmacy is listed at 6,000 euro a year across five years.

How does that compare with studying medicine in Nigeria?

The honest comparison is a six-year total against a six-year total, not a first-year headline against a first-year headline. European fee schedules fall in later years at some universities and rise at others, so the only figure worth comparing is the sum. Accommodation, flights, insurance and one trip home a year belong in the same column.

Nigerian medical school fees are set institution by institution and revised by session, so a comparison built on a generic national average tells an applicant nothing about their own decision. What can be compared cleanly is what the European side publishes, because it publishes it in advance and in writing, for all six years at once.

There is also a cost that does not appear on either fee sheet: the years spent waiting for a place. A family weighing the two routes should put a number on that too. How does a Nigerian applicant get admitted?

Admission to the English-language programmes runs through the university's own entrance procedure, not through a central clearing system. The Medical University of Plovdiv examines applicants online in Biology, Chemistry and English, with six sitting dates between April and September 2026. Semmelweis University runs its own entrance examination and asks for upper-intermediate English plus basic biomedical English.

Documents are the slow part. Plovdiv requires the secondary school diploma and academic transcript, a certificate from Bulgaria's National Centre for Information and Documentation recognising the school-leaving qualification, a document showing the right to continue into higher education, a copy of the citizenship document and four passport photographs, submitted in paper and as separate PDF scans on a USB stick.

Foreign documents need legalising. Plovdiv's FAQ sets out both routes: an apostille from the issuing country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or another authorised institution where the Hague Convention applies, and otherwise a chain of certifications through the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consular Section of the Bulgarian Embassy.

Start early. The Nigerian side of that chain, from collecting a WAEC or NECO result in the right form to getting it certified and then stamped again, runs on the issuing body's timetable rather than yours. Specific grade requirements, subject combinations and score thresholds differ by university and are not the same for every profile, which is why they belong in a free individual consultation rather than in a general table.

What does the student visa route from Abuja or Lagos involve?

A medical degree needs a national long-stay visa, called a type D visa, not a Schengen short-stay visa. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Abuja states that a D visa may be valid for a maximum of one year and costs 200 euro, payable in cash in euro. Bulgaria's consular tariff sets 100 euro for a long-stay visa under Article 15, paragraph 1, with 200 euro applying under paragraph 2.

The Polish embassy's consular section sits at 10 River Niger Street, off Danube Street, Maitama, Abuja. Appointments are booked through the e-Konsulat system, applications are lodged in person, and the embassy states that scans and photographs are not accepted. Originals only. Applications may be submitted up to six months before the intended travel date and no later than fifteen days before it.

Bulgaria's requirement is blunter still. The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that no exception is made from the requirement for a personal interview when applying for a long-stay visa. The Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Abuja sits at 10 Euphrates Crescent, Maitama, with consular visiting hours from 09:00 to 12:00 on weekdays; an Honorary Consul in Lagos, at 17B Ladipo Oluwale Street in Apapa, covers Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Anambra.

One Bulgarian step catches people out. Plovdiv explains that the university forwards approved applications to Bulgaria's Ministry of Education, which issues a certificate that the applicant collects from the Admissions Office, and only then can the type D study visa be applied for at the Bulgarian consulate. The visa queue does not start when the admission letter arrives. It starts when that certificate is in hand.

Poland's document list for a student D visa is published: the application form, a 3.5 by 4.5 centimetre colour photograph, a valid passport, travel medical insurance with a minimum of 30,000 euro cover, proof of accommodation, proof of financial resources, and the original acceptance letter from the institution conducting the studies. The consul decides within fifteen calendar days, extendable to thirty in complex cases, and the embassy states that student visas are considered within fifteen to twenty-one days.

Hungary works differently again. Semmelweis University tells admitted students to book the embassy appointment around four to six weeks in advance because slots are limited, to expect a further one to four weeks for processing, to carry a passport valid at least six months beyond the date of entry and proof that tuition has been paid, and to apply for the residence permit within fifteen days of arrival in Hungary.

When should you start, week by week?

Work backwards from the term start, not forwards from today. The two fixed points are the university's entrance examination window and the embassy appointment, and the second cannot be booked until the first has produced an admission letter and, for Bulgaria, a ministry certificate.

• Twelve to nine months before term: assemble school-leaving results, request certified copies, and begin the apostille or legalisation chain. This step has no shortcut and runs on the issuing body's calendar.
• Nine to six months before: register for the university's entrance examination. Plovdiv's 2026 sittings ran from April to September, and a re-sit costs more than a first attempt, so the earliest usable date is the cheapest one.
• Six to four months before: admission letter, then the university's ministry submission. For Bulgaria, this is where the Ministry of Education certificate is produced and collected from the Admissions Office.
• Four to two months before: book the embassy appointment. Semmelweis advises four to six weeks of lead time on the appointment alone.
• Two months to departure: insurance, accommodation proof, tuition payment receipt, flight. Poland requires the original acceptance letter at the counter.
• First fifteen days after arrival: residence permit registration in Hungary. Other countries set their own registration window.

How do you pay European tuition from Nigeria?

Fees are quoted in the currency the university publishes, and that currency is what the university expects to receive. The Medical University of Plovdiv takes tuition by bank transfer to its own account, or in cash or by card at the Rectorate Building. The Medical University of Varna states that annual tuition may be paid at once or in two equal instalments, due no later than two weeks after the semester begins.

Instalments matter more than they sound. A family funding six years from Nigeria is exposed to whatever the naira does between one payment and the next, and halving each year's payment halves the size of any single exposure. The Central Bank of Nigeria publishes Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market rates in naira per US dollar; a euro-denominated fee crosses two conversions rather than one, which is a reason to check the sending bank's spread and not only its headline rate.

Watch the currency mix. Semmelweis University lists tuition in euro and its admission procedure fee in US dollars, so a Hungarian application involves both currencies before a student has left Nigeria.

Keep every receipt. Hungary's student visa document list includes proof of having paid the tuition fee, which makes the bank confirmation a visa document rather than an accounting record. The same receipt is often what an admissions office asks for before issuing the letter the embassy wants to see.

What happens to the degree when you return to Nigeria?

A European medical degree is registrable in Nigeria through the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria's assessment examination for foreign-trained graduates. The Council held that examination twice in 2026: on 10 and 11 June at University College Hospital, Ibadan, and on 28 and 29 October at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, with inductions for successful candidates in July and November.

Two requirements shape the choice of university years before the examination. The Council requires that the degree come from an institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, published through a partnership between the World Federation for Medical Education and FAIMER, a division of Intealth. It also requires a Certificate of Good Standing from the medical or dental regulatory authority of the country where the applicant trained, together with stamped verification through EPIC or DataFlow.

What surprises applicants once the process is under way?

Four things, in the order they tend to arrive. The first is that the year-one fee is not the fee. At both Bulgarian universities checked here the schedule changes after the early years, and at Plovdiv the first year is the cheapest of the six rather than the dearest.

The second is the ministry step. Nothing on a Bulgarian admission letter says that a separate Ministry of Education certificate stands between the letter and the visa counter, yet Plovdiv's own FAQ makes it a precondition of applying.

The third is that the embassy wants the applicant, in person, with originals. Poland's Abuja page states that forms sent by fax, post or email are not accepted and that scans and photographs will not do; Bulgaria states that no exception is made from the personal interview requirement for a long-stay visa. The fourth arrives six years later. The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria asks for a Certificate of Good Standing from the regulator in the country of study, which means the relationship with that regulator has to be in good order at the point of leaving. That is something decided in the final year abroad, not in the first year home.
