Transfer from Budapest back to Germany: Credit Recognition for Higher Semesters
17.09.2026
How many subject semesters from Budapest are recognised in Germany?
How many subject semesters from Budapest are recognised depends primarily on the number of semesters completed. There are no blanket figures. Based on Medschool Experts' internal experience, completing two semesters typically results in one subject semester being recognised, three semesters results in two, and from four semesters onwards, four subject semesters are recognised. The final decision, however, is always made by the competent state examination office on a case-by-case basis.
These figures are not a guarantee. They are drawn from the many transfer processes that Medschool Experts has accompanied. Each office reviews your study history individually. The comprehensive guide Transferring back to Germany: how credit recognition works explains the principle behind it for all locations.
| Completed semesters in Budapest | Subject semesters typically recognised in Germany |
|---|---|
| 1 (if medical terminology has been completed) | 1 |
| 2 | 1 |
| 3 | 2 |
| 4 | 4 |
| 5 | 4 |
A genuine advantage of Semmelweis University: those who successfully complete medical terminology in the first semester can already count on one recognised subject semester from that point onwards. This is unusually early. For students who want to return to Germany soon, the subject is therefore particularly worthwhile.
Further information is available elsewhere too. More about daily student life, the curriculum and the university itself can be found on the location page for Semmelweis University Budapest.
Why we do not publish lists here
Nothing about this subject is decided centrally. Responsibilities, criteria and timings differ from one federal state to the next, from faculty to faculty and from year to year — which is why you will not find checklists or date tables on this page. A list that is one round out of date can cost you a semester, and that is a price nobody should pay for a website.
What works instead is the individual route. Send us your study records from Budapest and tell us where you would like to end up, and we will tell you what is realistic for your profile — including the highest point of entry we can reach for you.

Which German universities are an option?
In principle, all state medical faculties in Germany that have available places in the desired subject semester. Based on Medschool Experts' experience, some faculties open up in almost every subject semester, while others advertise several subject semesters at the same time. Which of them is realistic for you depends on your recognised subject semester and on how many places happen to be free at that moment — and both change from round to round.
With the Chances Calculator you can get an initial feel for your situation. We then go through the full picture with you and say honestly where we see a genuine chance for you.
The place-changer advantage
When available places in higher subject semesters are allocated, a fixed ranking applies in many places: hardship cases first, then place-changers, then lateral entrants, and only then does a lottery decide. Place-changers are students who are already enrolled at a German university and merely wish to change their study location. This is an honest limitation: those coming directly from Budapest are classified as lateral entrants at most universities and therefore rank below place-changers.
Nevertheless, lateral entrant places are real and are regularly allocated, precisely because places do become free every semester. Knowing where those chances sit is exactly what we bring to the table.
You are not alone. Personal testimonials from other returnees from abroad can also be found at StudyBackHome, a community dedicated specifically to this kind of transfer.
What Medschool Experts handles during the transfer
We take the administrative side off your hands and keep you out of the paperwork: you tell us where you stand, we look at your profile and then say where we can place you — and at the highest point of entry we can reach. Medschool Experts was founded by Marcel Kloos, a Swiss-licensed dentist. He studied medicine and dentistry in Sofia between 2015 and 2021, started at the age of 24, and today leads Medschool Experts in Bern. That experience counts.
And if a place in Germany does not work out in the semester you have in mind, the route does not end there. Behind us stands the largest selection of official partner universities we know of — for human medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine — where a start is plannable and where we regularly get transfer students in at one of the last two years of the programme. Those who are unsure can speak freely in a free consultation.
The author's view
In my view, Budapest is one of the most straightforward starting points for a later transfer back to Germany. The early credit recognition option via medical terminology is a genuine advantage. This is rare. Other locations do not offer this in the same way. Those who factor in this pathway from the very beginning can align their studies in Budapest accordingly.
That said, a transfer remains a process with an open outcome; it depends on offices, deadlines and available places. There are no guarantees. That is precisely why I advise an early, honest assessment of your own situation. At Medschool Experts, we guide students from Budapest through exactly this process.
Conclusion
A return from Budapest is realistic, and Semmelweis is one of the better starting points for it — not least because medical terminology can earn you a recognised subject semester unusually early.
We deliberately publish no checklists and no date tables here, because responsibilities and timings differ per federal state, per faculty and per year. Send us your study records instead, along with where you would like to end up, and we will tell you what is realistic for your profile and at which point of entry we can get you in. If a German place does not work out for the semester you have in mind, we have the largest selection of official partner universities we know of for human medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine — with transfer students often starting in one of the last two years of the programme.
The next step costs nothing: book a free consultation and we will look at your situation together.

Frequently Asked Questions: Transferring from Budapest to Germany
Can I obtain German medical licensure with a degree from Semmelweis University?
Yes. Hungary is an EU member state, and your degree is automatically recognised under Directive 2005/36/EC. To obtain your licence to practise (Approbation), you submit your study credentials to the competent state examination office.
Up to which year of study can I transfer from Budapest?
A transfer is possible up to the fifth year of study in human medicine and up to the fourth year in dentistry. Entry into the final year is excluded throughout Europe, as the final institution bears training responsibility for that stage.
Are my exams from Budapest recognised on a one-to-one basis?
Not automatically. Each module is reviewed individually and compared with the German Approbationsordnung. The experience-based values on this page give you a point of reference, but they are not a guarantee.
What happens if I receive fewer subject semesters than expected?
You then start at the new university in a lower subject semester than you had hoped for. This does happen. That is why we always aim for the highest possible entry point and tell you in advance what we consider realistic.
Do I have to officially withdraw from Budapest?
Normally you de-register only once your new study place has been confirmed. The right sequence depends on the individual case, and we go through it with you.
Does the transfer also apply to dentistry students from Budapest?
Yes, the principle is identical. Dentistry students can transfer up to the fourth year of study, and the same case-by-case assessment applies as in human medicine.
Does a leave-of-absence semester in Budapest count towards credit recognition?
A leave-of-absence semester with no completed examinations generally does not count as a completed subject semester. What matters for credit recognition is the actual academic performance documented, not simply the length of enrolment.
What do you need from me in order to assess my chances?
Your study records from Budapest and a rough idea of where you would like to end up. That is enough for a first assessment. We deliberately publish no checklists here, because what is needed differs per faculty and per round — the paperwork is our job, not yours.
When is the right time to get in touch?
As early as you begin thinking about it. The earlier we know your situation, the more options are still open — in Germany, and at our official partner universities for human medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and veterinary medicine if the German route does not work out for the semester you want. A free consultation is the quickest way to a clear answer.
