Running in parallel to the credit recognition process is the actual study place application at the universities, usually through their own portals or via hochschulstart.de. Both processes need to be kept track of; they run at different times but are interlinked. Those who apply for the credit recognition decision too late may miss the actual application deadline, even if the credit recognition itself would have been unproblematic content-wise.

Which German universities are an option?

Among the universities that regularly report available places in virtually every subject semester are Gießen, Göttingen, Cologne, Mainz, Münster, Tübingen and Würzburg. Broader admission windows spanning several subject semesters are often offered by Bonn, Düsseldorf, Duisburg-Essen, LMU Munich and Regensburg. This fluctuates annually. In addition to the sheer number of places, it is worth looking at the subject structure of the respective university. Some study regulations more closely resemble the curriculum in Varna than others, which additionally facilitates credit recognition. A location with many available places is of little use if the content overlap is low and as a result only a few subject semesters are recognised anyway.

The place-changer advantage

When allocating study places in higher subject semesters, a clear ranking applies. Hardship cases come first, usually for health or family reasons.
