How many subject semesters from Pécs are recognised in Germany?

Why higher-semester places in Germany are the bottleneck

In principle, a higher subject semester in medicine can be studied at any German university that runs the programme – provided a place has become free. That is the whole difficulty. Places in higher semesters only exist where someone else has left, and how many appear in a given semester fluctuates from year to year and from faculty to faculty. Nobody can predict it as a blanket figure, and no ranking of universities changes that.

German universities also allocate what does become free according to a fixed order: hardship cases first, then place-changers, then lateral entrants, and only then a lottery. You count as a place-changer if you were already enrolled in the same subject at another university – in Pécs, for instance – and simply want to change location without changing subject. That classification usually puts you in a better position than a classic lateral entrant, but it is still a queue for a scarce good.

One structural limit applies everywhere: entry directly into the final year of study is not possible at any European university, because the final institution bears training responsibility for that year. A transfer is therefore realistic up to the fifth year of study in human medicine and up to the fourth year in dentistry.
