What Sets Wrocław Medical University Apart?

Wrocław Medical University is a state-run Polish institution with around 6,400 students, of whom about 825 are in the English-language programme. Since 2003, the university has taught medicine, dentistry and nursing in English. For the 2026/27 academic year, human medicine costs 67,900 złoty per year, dentistry 78,700 złoty. There is no entrance exam for EU applicants.

For the 2026/27 academic year, Wrocław Medical University charges 67,900 złoty for human medicine and 78,700 złoty for dentistry per academic year. At an exchange rate of 4.25 złoty per euro, that’s around 15,980 and 18,520 EUR respectively. Nursing costs 32,700 złoty. Paying in instalments adds 2.5 to 3.5 percent to the total.

The euro figures are conversions. The university itself converts foreign-currency payments into złoty, so the actual amount depends on the exchange rate on the day. Anyone planning six years ahead should factor in exchange-rate risk too. Then there’s the price trend: the fee for human medicine rose from 62,384 złoty in the 2024/25 academic year to 67,900 złoty in 2026/27 – an increase of 8.8 percent in two years. For dentistry, it was 8.7 percent.

Which Programmes Does Wrocław Medical University Offer in English?

In 2026, exactly three subjects can be studied in English at Wrocław Medical University: medicine over six years, dentistry over five years, and nursing over three years. Pharmacy, psychology, physiotherapy and public health are taught exclusively in Polish. Veterinary medicine in Wrocław belongs to a different university altogether.

Human medicine offers 140 places per year, dentistry only 24. According to the university, the curriculum of the English-language programme is identical to that of the Polish-language division.

Veterinary medicine in Wrocław is offered at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences. There, Veterinary Medicine runs in English over 11 semesters with 360 ECTS, EAEVE-certified since 11 May 2016 and therefore recognised across the EU. The fee is listed at 20,000 złoty per semester. Whether EEA citizens are fully or partly exempt isn’t clearly stated on the public pages. We don’t fill that gap with a guess – we clarify it directly with the university on a case-by-case basis.

Why Has Medicine Been Taught in Wrocław Since 1745?

Medicine has been taught in Wrocław since 1745. In 1811, the Viadrina moved from Frankfurt an der Oder to the city and merged with the Leopoldina to form the University of Breslau. Robert Koch and Paul Ehrlich, both later Nobel laureates in medicine, worked at this university. Alois Alzheimer also carried out research there.

One point deserves mention that marketing copy tends to leave out: today’s Wrocław Medical University is not a direct legal successor to that institution. The Polish Faculty of Medicine was newly established in 1945 and became an independent Medical Academy in 1950. Anyone studying in Wrocław today studies at the same place as Robert Koch, but not at the same university. The Polish line has its own milestones: in 1958, the first open-heart surgery in Poland, performed by Wiktor Bross; in 1966, the first living-donor kidney transplant.

Two ranking sources appear to disagree, and there’s a clear reason for that. In the THE World University Rankings 2026, Wrocław Medical University sits in the 501–600 band among more than 2,100 evaluated institutions, alongside Jagiellonian University – the best placing of any Polish institution. In the national Perspektywy ranking of medical universities for 2026, it lands mid-table. The difference comes from the comparison group: internationally, THE measures against the world’s leading institutions, while nationally, Perspektywy compares nine very strong Polish medical universities against each other. Both figures are correct. They just answer different questions.

Is There an Entrance Exam at Wrocław Medical University?

For applicants with a school-leaving certificate from the European Union, Wrocław Medical University has neither an entrance test nor an admissions interview in 2026. Admission is via an open, grade-based competition based on your school-leaving certificate. Biology is a compulsory subject, alongside a second science subject. English is expected at B2 level.

A test only applies to certificates from countries outside the EU, EFTA and OECD, and even there its result doesn’t count towards the score. How Is the Medicine Programme in Wrocław Structured?

The medicine programme at Wrocław Medical University lasts six years and comprises at least 360 ECTS. Since the 2024/25 academic year, a new national training standard applies in Poland: a maximum of five students in practical clinical teaching, a mandatory OSCE exam in the sixth year, and at least 900 hours of practical training in that final year.

Summer placements follow a clear progression: nursing in year one, general medicine and emergency care in year two, internal medicine in year three, surgery and paediatrics in year four, gynaecology, obstetrics and intensive care in year five. You can organise these placements yourself and complete them abroad. For German students, that means five summers in German hospitals are possible – and this is exactly where the network that matters for your career start comes from.

One compulsory element is worth naming honestly. For international dentistry students, a Polish-language course in the first two years is mandatory, so patient communication works from the third year onward. The same clinical framework applies in human medicine. Speaking only English for six years simply doesn’t work at the bedside.

What first-year students abroad almost always underestimate isn’t the coursework – it’s the weeks around it. Where Can You Work as a Doctor With a Wrocław Degree?

Under Annex V point 5.1.1 of Directive 2005/36/EC, the Polish medical qualification consists of three parts: the diploma carrying the title lekarz, the passed state exam LEK, and the certificate for the postgraduate internship, staż podyplomowy. With all three in hand, automatic recognition applies across the entire EU and EEA.

The diploma alone isn’t enough. The Polish Medical Chamber states this explicitly, and Directive 2005/36/EC of 7 September 2005 lists the three components individually in its Annex V. Many comparison sites leave this point out.

Anyone with only the diploma can initially obtain a temporary professional permit in Germany under Section 10(5) of the Federal Medical Licensing Act (Bundesärzteordnung). A 2020 decree from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia typically allows 13 months for this, to complete the internship in Germany and then have it recognised in Poland. So the route exists – it just needs to be part of the plan from the start.

The question I’m reliably asked in consultations about Poland is: can I start working in Germany right away with just the diploma? The honest answer is yes, with a condition. You can start, but initially with a temporary permit rather than a full licence, and the missing component still needs to be completed. I’d rather say that before enrolment than in the final year of the programme.

What About Dentistry, Pharmacy, Psychology and Veterinary Medicine in Wrocław?

In Wrocław in 2026, dentistry is the only subject offered in English besides human medicine. Pharmacy and psychology at Wrocław Medical University run exclusively in Polish. Veterinary medicine is offered in English by the University of Environmental and Life Sciences Wrocław. Automatic EU recognition doesn’t apply to psychologists.

Dentist. In Poland, the same three-part logic applies to dentists as to doctors: diploma, the dental state exam LDEK, and the postgraduate internship. Here too, Wrocław offers an English-language internship option, held at the university’s dental centre. With 24 places, the programme is very small, meaning plenty of chair-side time. Pharmacist. Pharmacy at Wrocław Medical University runs only in Polish, over 5.5 years. For German-speaking applicants without Polish skills, Wrocław therefore isn’t a pharmacy destination. The pharmacist profession itself is regulated across the EU and listed under Annex V point 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC, making it generally eligible for automatic recognition.

Psychologist and psychotherapist. Psychology at Wrocław Medical University is taught in Polish. There’s also a legal point to note: automatic EU recognition doesn’t apply to psychologists, because the profession has no harmonised minimum training requirement under Annex V. Anyone wanting to become a psychotherapist in Germany follows the study route set out under the reformed Psychotherapists Act, with a licence at the end.

Veterinarian. Here, Wrocław is stronger than many expect. The University of Environmental and Life Sciences offers Veterinary Medicine in English, over 11 semesters with 360 ECTS, EAEVE-certified since 2016, and with 560 mandatory practical placement hours. The veterinary profession is listed under Annex V point 5.4.2 and is automatically recognised across the EU; in Germany, the regulation on the licensing of veterinarians governs the procedure. What Does Life in Wrocław Cost Per Month?

In 2026, students in Wrocław get by on 2,000 to 2,400 złoty a month if they live in a dormitory and cook for themselves – around 470 to 565 EUR. With a shared flat, the budget sits at 3,200 to 3,800 złoty; with your own flat, at 4,000 to 4,500 złoty.

A dormitory place in a double room costs, depending on the institution, 630 to 900 złoty; a single room, 1,080 to 1,470 złoty. A discounted monthly public transport pass costs 37 to 55 złoty, or 30 to 45 złoty through the city’s programme. Wrocław has around 675,000 residents, one of Central Europe’s most beautiful old towns, and a very large student population.

Housing is where the real friction lies. Around 80 percent of dormitory places are already allocated to higher-year students by May. In consultations, I regularly see offers celebrated while the housing question sits untouched for four weeks afterwards. That’s the wrong order. Who Is Wrocław Medical University the Right Choice For?

In 2026, Wrocław Medical University particularly suits students for whom small groups and early hands-on practice matter: four to five people at the bedside, a national standard capping clinical teaching groups at five students, and summer placements that can be completed in Germany. Its proximity to Germany adds to that.

Wrocław is a less good fit if pharmacy or psychology is your goal, if you’d rather not learn another language, or if you’re looking for a fee that’s guaranteed to stay constant across the whole programme. You’re more likely to find that at Rīga Stradiņš University in Latvia.

My final assessment: the Polish three-part structure of diploma, LEK and internship isn’t a drawback – it’s a shift in your timeline. From a professional standpoint, I actually see a structured practical year as a benefit. What matters is that these 13 months are part of the plan from the very start.
