What a transfer from Zagreb actually looks like

A transfer back to Germany is not a single event but the result of how your own academic record lines up with the German programme structure. Two students who spent exactly the same number of semesters in Zagreb can end up in different semesters in Germany, purely because of which subjects they have completed and how their record reads.

That is why you will not find a semester table on this page. Any figure we published here would be wrong for most of the people reading it, and being wrong about something this consequential is expensive.

What can be said about Zagreb specifically is encouraging. In Medschool Experts’ internal experience, the Zagreb curriculum is regarded as well comparable with the German pre-clinical and clinical structure. That is not true everywhere: at the neighbouring Croatian location of Split, for example, some subjects sit late in the curriculum, which can complicate matters for a transfer. That particular problem does not arise in Zagreb.

Why we do not publish checklists or figures

Recognition rules, required paperwork and the calendar around a transfer differ by federal state, by university and by year, and they change. A list copied off a website is the single most common reason a well-qualified student ends up applying for the wrong semester, at the wrong place, at the wrong moment.

Where can you land, and in which semester?

In principle, a higher-semester place in medicine can be sought at any German university that offers the programme. In practice, the locations differ considerably in how often transfer students actually come in, and how well a particular recognised semester fits what a given faculty has available. Some places take transfer students regularly; others only occasionally.

One structural point applies everywhere and is worth knowing early: entering directly into the concluding phase of the degree is not possible at any German university, because the awarding university carries responsibility for the final stage of training. The same principle applies across Europe. Everything before that is open, and where exactly you land is what we work out with you.
